I've only posted a few times, but I read the list everyday, and I LOVE Bob's wonderful Covers CD's. This past week I traded in about 7 of Joni's early CD's in order to replace them with the HDCD re-releases with the original art work, etc. My main reason for doing this was the audience "banter" had been mysteriously removed on my first disc, MILES OF AISLES, but on the re-release, ITS BACK!!! MILES OF AISLES was the (double) album that first turned me on to Joni and I just love her and her guitar especially. My questions are : Why was the audience "banter" removed the first time around? Certainly it wasn't a time constraint. Are the other HDCD's marked improvements over the initial releases sonically or just re-packaging? Its only the early CD's that need replacing because from HOSL on I have the HDCD's. Any info is greatly appreciated. By the way, I've seen our lady in concert TWICE! Once at the DAY IN THE GARDEN at the original Woodstock site in '98 (surreal and heavenly...words can't describe) and on the BSN tour in NYC with the huge orchestra...just gorgeous! Thanks again! But still alive, and have some musical questions. One of them is actually related to the Joanster, so I wasn't sure whether to "NJC" or not. Decided on "sjc". (1) In that ZigZag interview from 2/77, Joni mentions a musician, Julie Felix, whom I've never heard of, who "was doing quite a few of [Joni's] songs, not very common ones, but peculiar ones {she, i.e. Joni] had forgotten..." Wow. Did Ms. Felix ever put out a record? Anybody ever heard it, have it, etc.? Did somebody already ask these questions? (2) Anybody familiar with the group Abandoned Pools? Aside from the intriguing name, I've heard fragments of one of their songs, and liked it. Sorta art-rocky. What can you tell me about them? I'm tempted to take a chance on them, but as I say, I've only heard part of one song. (3) Ditto for India.Aria (if I have the spelling right). Only read about her -- can anybody describe her? I suppose if I watch the Grammy's, which I probably will becuz of Joni's Lifetime Achievement Award, I'll find out -- I think Ms I.A is up for at least one grammy. But anyway, any advice is welcome. I've contacted her webmaster to check into the song listing for her 1967 LP's, but haven't gotten any response. It would be awesome if there are some other Joni covers of unreleased songs. But the vibe I got from the zigzag article was that Julie performed them in concert as opposed to recording them. More info: http://www.jonimitchell.com/Grammy85.html>> Oh, wow! This is amazing -- I didn't know they'd ever met (Joni and Dionne)! My first musical heroes were Bacharach, who wrote for Dionne (with Hal David), and Jimmy Webb, who wrote largely at first for the 5th Dimension, followed soon by Laura Nyro, and finally Joni! My four biggest heroes (there's like a 17-way tie for fifth place), and I'm gradually finding out that they've all met or collaborated or whatever. Sorry to gush, it's just I'm always thrilled when Joni works with someone else I like, like Michael McDonald or Peter Gabriel, and I didn't know Joni and Dionne had ever met. Does anyone know if Joni and Burt B. ever met -- I know Larry K. was producing "Grace of my Heart", and both Joni and Burt (working with Elvis Costello this time) contributed one song each, but did they meet? Just curious, Walt ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Feb 2002 23:59:19 EST From: BigWaltinSF@aol.com Subject: (njc) Ellington's Reminiscing in Tempo Hi all, I was channel surfing -- forgot who said it, but I agree that with well over 100 channels on digital cable, and over 20 digital music channels, there's almost always *something* worthwhile on. Trouble is, at least now, you gotta live in a big enough city to get it. (Don't know the status of those satellite disk companies and their offerings -- do they reach everywhere?) Where was I? Oh yes, channel surfing, and I stumbled onto Part 4 of Ken Burns' Jazz Series. (On one of the four(!) PBS channels we get on digital cable in SF). Wonderful, wonderful -- if I could afford it, I'd order the whole set from PBS ($100 for all twenty hours of it, I think -- probably worth it, but I can't right now...) Near the end of this segment, they told the heart-wrenching story of how overcome with grief Duke Ellington was when his mom died -- he couldn't or wouldn't write for something like eight months -- and then, while he was on a train, he starting writing furiously what would become Reminiscing In Tempo. I was ***blown away***! I *must* have this! Any of you familiar with it? -- it's 13 or 14 minutes long, and comes in three movements (does this sound familiar) -- and he mostly got critically raked over the coals for it (some of this was undoubtably racism -- gettin' too big for his britches crap). But oh!!! the part I heard was heartbreaking, and I can always use music to cry by. (Of Joni's stuff, quite a bit of TtT works for me -- from the sad Man From Mars to the happy, uplifting Facelift -- because I listened to it nonstop as my dad lay dying in '99. Sigh) Is there a particularly good collection/boxed set of Ellington -- it would have to include the Reminiscing in Tempo, or perhaps I could find a separate disk with that song... But you guys always have great suggestions. Evian ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Feb 2002 01:52:07 EST From: BigWaltinSF@aol.com Subject: Winter Lady, and Man From Mars, demo version... Hi all, A friend sent me a tape with some great stuff on it, including some very early Joni stuff -- a really giggly "Coke Commercial" thingy that apparently (with different words) became Ballerina Valerie, or did BV precede the Coke Commercial version? Another thing on the tape was "Winter Lady", which she wrote from the point of view of a man -- which makes me wonder, did she write it for Chuck (Mitchell, her brief husband), or for Gordon Lightfoot, who I believe was their roommate for a while in Tornto or Detroit, I forget. I would swear in this version from '67, she sings sort of like Gordy, same vibrato and phrasing. Just wondering if anyone knows -- did he ever sign a version of this song, say in performance? For that matter, did he or any man ever record the song? Oh, also on the tape, is the demo version of Man From Mars, which is a zillion times better than the version on TtT!!! The piano arrangement is similar to the one I adapted from the TtT PVG sheet music -- I found that arrangement to be shrill, requiring a right hand jump of a couple of octaves that didn't sound good (although it is closer to the sound of the TtT CD version). And is that a mandolin that comes in on the second verse? Nice. And the harmonies are cool, and I love the way she wails "Man from Mars" a couple of times at the end, which isn't done on the TtT version. Vigard's version (from the Grace of My Heart soundtrack) is very similar to Joni's demo version, which, I was told some time back, accidentally showed up on early copies of the CD, and was replaced by the Vigard version. One more thing before I put you all in a coma -- I noticed that where Joni sings "Every time I think of you/swallowed by the dark", Vigard sings "Every time I picture you..." Not sure it makes any semantic difference. Anyway, pity Joni didn't put the demo version on TtT. It's just better. IMHO. warmly, walt ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2002 #88 **************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
