It contains his own version of "If Not For You", and "If Dogs Run Free", which just knocks me out every time. What I wouldn't give to be in a workshop with her. Lucky you!!!! I did get the chance to meet her briefly a couple of years ago when she played here... I have never done this with anyone else ever....but there she was, there was my friend with a camera, so I asked if she would mind taking a picture with me. I could tell she was pretty tired (she was very very pregnant at the time but it sure didn't affect her incredible guitar playing). She was so gracious & sweet...I told her I was a songwriter & longtime fan of hers & she wished me luck (didn't have my cd recorded at the time or I would have given it to her for sure). Anyway, I just had to share this cuz Shawn Colvin stands very close to Joni in my book, as far as singer/songwriter/guitar players go & it was a HUGE thrill for me to have that brief chance to speak with her & have a photo of us together! I put the photo up on my fridge with all my other casual photos of friends & family... > Then Anne added: > Yes, she's either 44 or 45. I listened to it for over an hour late last night until my buggy computer knocked me off the connection! While I definitely remember her from the 70s and knew she was an incredible lady, I am only recently learning more about her. Wow. Some of the music in the interview brought back many memories, but most I'd never heard before and was just blown away by it and her range in not only voice but style. I saw some interesting notes on one of her websites about being the only female artist besides Joni Mitchell to self-produce some of her albums. She also, like Joni, worked with Henry Lewy. Her daughter, Maya Rudolph, is the main reason I started watching SNL again and I think she is one of the most brilliant talents to ever grace that show. There was a very sweet article in People a few months ago about Maya and her father which conveyed what a special man he is. How wonderful for you to get your start with him! (Oh yeah.... he is gorgeous ;-) Thanks also for the info on the Knitting Factory videos - I will check out the archives. You're either going to, um, appreciate it by discovering it for yourself or... you're not. People can tell you whatever they want about why so-and-so is such a great singer or songwriter (whatever), but there's still personal taste. I'm gonna catch hell from all kinds of people for this, but the time has come for me to step out and 'fess up that, in addition to disliking Stevie Nicks, (quelle horreur!) I never got (or maybe just plain don't like) James Taylor (don't even ask - somehow he's just too white-bread for my liking - and yet, I do like some of his stuff, but he always sounded like he needed to take an iron pill or something); Dylan (there again, I like a lot of his *stuff* and even sing/play it myself, but not necessarily him singing; and (this is the big one because I know a lot of you are major fans) Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Never got 'em, never will. Oh yeah, and Minnie Ripperton - to be fair, the only song I ever heard her sing is "Loving you" and I wanted to scream every time she went for this "La la la la la.... aaaaaaaaaaaaahh" things in a range no one should ever attempt to get into, even when equipped with an oxygen mask. The flame-proof suit is on, so I'm ready to take my lumps (nothing liked a mixed metaphor to close off.) ______________________________________________________________________ Web-hosting solutions for home and business! http://website.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Feb 2002 01:12:41 +0000 From: colin Subject: Re: Dylan (NJC) > this campaign to get me > > to "get" Dylan will be > > what we call a "Mitzvah" (a good deed.) getting to listen for any length of time is what we Catholics would call penence! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Feb 2002 01:13:40 +0000 From: colin Subject: Re: shelley winters/inside the actor's studio NJC > I saw > her do The Gingerbread Lady in Chicago and she was breathtaking live. better than dead at any rate....... > > > Jerry > > np: Betty Buckley - Answer Me My Love - -- bw colin DAK,BRO GC, 950i, 940,860,864,890, 260,Silver 830,860, 580 and 270, Passap 6000, Duo80. colin@tantra-apso.com http://www.tantra-apso.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Feb 2002 01:36:59 +0000 From: colin Subject: NJC New Carly Carly's new album is recorded and to be released in September. An album of Xmas covers tho one song she wrote. PISH PISH PISH!!!! We have only had 3 self penned albums in almost 15 years!(4 if you include a movie soundtrack which did have quite a few songs on it and is good.) The Bedroom Tapes is now back in her private ownership as she is no longer with Arista. (She was most unhappy when that head honcho was sacked. The new guy probably wanted her to do a hip hop album).(this was an album that was greeted with 'what's this? by most of us fans. Rickie Lee Jones, for one. Maybe I wasn't ready to appreciate Rickie Lee back when 'Pirates' came out and maybe it's the same thing with Dylan. I was in our local Costco yesterday and found a 3 cd package of 'Blonde on Blonde', 'Blood on the Tracks' and 'Time Out of Mind'. I debated about buying it as I've never been a huge Dylan fan. The price was right - really a steal for these 3 cds - so I bought it. Maybe I'll become a convert!" I believe this is very true. For years, I just could not get past Dylan's voice and I felt like something was wrong with me. Last year, I went to a panel discussion at a local bookstore because my brother-in-law was involved in it. There were about 6 Dylan "experts" and/or local celebreties who shared their impressions of Dylan's music and answered questions. Their passion for Dylan sounded exactly like a group a JMDL'ers talking about Joni and I became very intrigued. The issue of his voice came up and they explained that it's the way he uses it and changes it that just works for his music. They recommended "Blood on the Tracks" and "Highway 61 Revisited," so I took a deep breath, went over to the music section and bought them. For some reason, I suddenly "got it"!!! I even bought his new CD and can't stop listening to it (and his voice is very gravelly on this one). The time was just right for me, I guess! First was a blurb on Boy George (who apparently still dresses like a girl) wherein he says as one of his future projects, he would like to do an album of... Joni covers. The whole story is at: http://www.macleans.ca/xta-asp/storyview.asp?viewtype=browse&tpl=browse_frame&vpath=/2002/02/25/People/64100.shtml (I always thought he had a good voice, so it works for me.) Then, there's another, much longer, article on Alanis Morrissette and what she's up to these days. In the 2nd paragraph, the interviewer is accompanying Alanis to an art store where she's buying up lots of paint. And I quote: "At the art store, Alanis grabs a shopping basket and heads straight for the acrylics. "With oils you need more patience," she explains. "Unfortunately I'm in a bit of a time crunch." Time crunch? Yes, she's on a deadline to produce some artwork for her album cover. *Like Joni Mitchell?* No, nothing like that. Just an experiment. (In fact, none of her work will end up on the cover.)" This one's at http://www.macleans.ca/xta-asp/storyview.asp?viewtype=browse&tpl=browse_frame&vpath=/2002/02/25/Music/64121.shtml Two Joni mentions in one magazine, same date, Feb 25/02 (funny how ahead of their time these mags are, n'est-ce pas?)
