One that comes to mind is a group called OutKast. They have done a song called "The Whole World." It is their commentary on how some countries felt we deserved to have all of those people die in the WTC bombing. Their video depicts them in a three ring circus while the countries in question are metaphorically cast as the audience dressed in business suits and watching without emotion. The music is very original and well done (an almost absent of profanity). I found it quite a refreshing change that a rap group wrote concerning their convictions. I would like to see more of it. Singles by NWA were amongst them. There was talk about the lyrics etc and how offensive they were. (this was not a program supporing the bans). Anyway, it seems that the rap that most people seem to object to is called 'gansta rap' and not the usual rap. (and was equally disliked by black people) However, there was a comment, echoing a similar one made here, that I still find offensive, that those of us who dislike the sound of rap, dislike it not becasue it is an unpleasant sound but because we are racist. crap. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Feb 2002 04:39:04 -0800 From: "Robert Holliston" Subject: Princess Margaret (njc) Well, I was sorry to see Princess Margaret go. She was an enormously interesting person with great potential, most of which remained untapped and frustrated. Plus, it isn't often that a 71-year old dies while her/his mother is still alive.... As for what she may (or may not) have said about the Irish; as for her life of subsidized luxury; as for her exaggerated sense of entitlement? It's how she was brought up! If ever there was an argument for nurture vs. nature, this is it. Margaret Rose Windsor was not only a beautiful woman, she was a highly intelligent one. But according to the royal tradition, she was never given anything like a real education; she was just given anything she wanted. If she turned into an arrogant person with an exaggerated sense of entitlement, this is surely the fault of her parents and her country. We shouldn't judge Margaret Rose too harshly. Abuse can happen as easily to the rich as it can to the poor. I'll miss Princess Margaret. This reminds me of something that happened in the List a long time ago. There was a thread on desert island discs and everyone was encouraged to list their top ten favorites. I always like lists because it opens me to different tastes of different people and I usually come out a little bit informed about those in the List. Anyway, in my top ten list, I remembered saying I always liked Jimmy Webb's "Ten Easy Pieces", and then someone reacted (I think it was Kakki) by placing a "Yay" at the end of that number. Clueless about "yay" and its usage, I thought at first I was being ridiculed publicly for my personal choice because I had this misguided assumption that as "yay" is close to "Yuck", someone is telling the list that my taste is one inch this side of garbage. Being quite new to the List then and being the only one from the Philippines (maybe even until now?? Fellow Pinoys, speak up!!), I didn't know if I should react instinctively or ask the advice of someone from the List. What to do when I didn't have friends then (maybe even now?? haha!!) to ask for advice. So I emailed someone offlist (the one and only Barbara Burst! Where are you now?) and asked what "Yay" meant. She told me what it meant and the context this word was used by Americans. I was so glad I asked her because if I didn't I would have made a major blunder and alienated many. In retrospect, I shouldn't have worried then, because unlike any other Discussion List I am subbed, the JMDL is one List where its full of intelligent, analytical, nurturing and creative people whose posts may not make me agree with what they say, but always in the level of discourse and with a conscious effort to elevate the level of discussions to something worthwhile and meaningful. And best of all, it is really an international family where people have this nice regard to everyone on the List, and just because no one responds to your message or to your threads doesn't mean you're not loved. Sorry, Fred, for this long explanation. Bottom line, I am a fan of your music and I hope other people get to experience the "musical high" you gave us through the years. I figured, Sean Penn plays mentally challenged father who fights to keep his daugnter, as predictable as all hell, and since I am already guessing he'll win the Oscar since if not now, when, I may as well as see it and since it started only 20 minutes after Monsters Ball ended, perfect timing - no way was I prepared for the emotional power and honesty of I Am Sam. Sean Penn was so utterly outstanding - I normally do not like Michelle Pfifer and she was brilliant - but the script goes places that I did not expect at all, the brilliant use of Beatles music to as part of the score - I began to lose it the moment that Rufus Wainwright began to sing Across the Universe, I defy anyone to not tear up at that moment in the movie - the audience was totally in rapt with that film, not a sound from everyone but I know that I was not the only one who sat there with tears running their cheeks (I haved never cried like that in a movie)- I have worked in foster care, I know what it is to lose children on bullshit reasons no matter how good a parent one is (as I lost mine becasue I am gay - you folks on the coast have no idea how brutal the courts are on gay parents in small town midwest America, but I digress), and I am sam kept going places that were astoun ding in the depth, where one might expect maudlin, it was brilliant, it it was unpredictable tghe whole colurse of the movie, it is so skillfully written, so beautifully directed and acted, the Beatles music such a brilliant tounch, if George was your favorite Beatle, if you have ever looked at life through what you have learned from music lyrics, or from the movies, if you have been a parent, or loved a child... oh gees, have I made my point that I Am Sam is one of the emotionally stunning films I have ever seen? This movie was robbed in not being nominated for best picture We were recently talking in here about choices, and Sophies Choice - I am Sam takes us over terrain of making choices for ourselves and for our children - and it is so life affirming and joyous through the tears of pain and the joy of life and expectation - damn it, quit reading this and go see I am Sam. Go see it now. (the Rev) Vince NP: Mothers Natures Son, sung by Sheryl Crow, yes, I bought the soundtrack on the way home, Aimee Mann, Sarah McLachlan, Ben Folds (his version of Golden Slumbers, from the extended sequence on Abby Road, just made that into a whole new song and emotional experience) , Wallflowers, Ben Harper, Eddie Vedder, all doing Beatles covers.. damn it, quit reading this and go see I Am Sam. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Feb 2002 11:28:19 +0800 (PHT) From: Subject: Julia, Chris and Larry (njc but a little jc related) Kakki, Thanks for informing us about Julia's concert.
