Adults, just large children, do pretty much the same thigns. buy the latest car, the latest gadget, the ebst house, the 'name' clothes(assuming of course they have the money and if they don't they want it). You just have to look at the ads to see that we are targeted just like children and we react just like children. If we did not, we wouldn't buy the age defying creams, the shampoos that leave hair looking unreal, the food that makes your heart last forever, the food that makes you feel loved, the car that makes you feel successful or that you have a big dong, the excercise thingy that makes you look like the jerks who spend all day working out in just five minutes, and on and on and on.... Howver, it is not the media's fault.(after all 'the media' is just people like you and me). No it is our fault for not taking responsibilty for our selves and our feelings. Our fault that we have let our selves get in such bad shape that we fall prey to all these false promises, that we create false gods(money, sex, looks, food, material posessions). I think some Americans of a certain age grew up watching the fairy-tale pagentry and tabloid and gossip accounts of the British royal family and being intrigued and interested in it. As for Margaret it seems like she was always being gossiped about since I can remember. Anytime a new item came up about her, my parents would always counter it with saying that she deserved compassion and understanding because of some of the raw deals she was dealt regarding Townsend, etc. I think some feel similar reactions to stories about Diana and some of the others. At any rate, they are just humans who, for all their privilege, suffer just like everyone else and in different ways, too, because of their positions. I'm not saying she was Mother Teresa, but she was an interesting person and it seems (from my long-distance view) that she was a very good mother judging how her children seemed to have grown up. I remember all the slams in the tabloids about Fergie for years that made her sound like a total mess. Then by chance I happened to meet her briefly once at a charity event and she was nothing at all like she had been portrayed. I was very impressed with her and thought she seemed to be a great person. Don't ask me for my opinion of Charles, however - his stock is rather low in my book! ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Feb 2002 18:23:54 -0800 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: CSNY touring....(njc) I am guessing because there are four artists splitting the bucks four ways...too bad its so expensive...I will save my money for CPR... <> Probably because people will pay it! Along these lines, you should see the ads every hour during the Olympics for the blue boner pills-oops-I mean Viagra... they're even giving a 6 pill trial for free. The ads feature roaring red racecars...hardly subtle, but comical in a surreal way. My recipe for the fall of corporate culture: never buy anything you see advertised on TV. If they are spending millions to push it, they are the enemy of freedom and democracy. I recall some long discussions on the CSN list about this and I think the large part of the problem lies with the promoters who are somehow tied in with the Clear Channel monopoly, etc. Because they have a monopoly on concert events they can charge whatever they please because there is little competition and where else is everyone supposed to go, including the performers themselves? I seem to recall even Crosby decrying the situation on that list. However, another thing I have found is that the hardcore fans (such as on their list) all want to have a front row seat and of course, those are going to cost a fortune at practically any concert. I went to their show here at Staples Center in 2000 and paid around $78 for a pretty close in spot. At Staples they also have big screens everywhere and the acoustics were great. I was not at all disappointed. Most of the seats in the rest of the place were around $48.00. It was worth it at that price. We recently merged my company with the utility in San Diego and are trying to make everyone a big happy family. About two weeks ago, I was given a position in which I manage two departments, one in San Diego (Hi Lindsay!) and my old group in LA along with a third group in Downey (home of Karen and Richard, make that Richard) which is part of my current employer. In total, I now have about 40 people in my organization -- from very distinct corporate cultures -- and my early task is to assimilate them to one culture. So, I was thinkin' about a way to bring Joni into this and decided at the first summit meeting on March 8, where everyone will meet one another for the first time. You see, the SD folks have been calling the LA folks to "see what kinda boss I am." I've been told they say I am fine, as long as you don't ask me about Joni Mitchell! So, I decided to present each of them with their own copy of BSN! What could be better than talking about both sides of the Company, now? Should be a kick, I'll let you all know their reaction... But they did play for three hours. That less than $100/hour in the expensive seats. :) But if you take the $210 top price and divide it by four, that leaves each guy with 52.50 a ticket (more than I'd pay for anyone but Neil solo BTW!) HOWEVER, Joni toured with an orchestra plus Klein on bass and Erskine on drums plus Vince Mendoza's cut of the money. That must have been an expensive undertaking. That's why $90 face value was OK with me. >>I don't think it >>needs to be that high. Dylan tickets here went for >> >>$30 (General admission) & $39.50 (reserved). Yeah, Dylan tickets do run cheap. I read recently that Dylan doesn't tour for money-just for fun. He makes more of his money in royalties. Sounds logical to me. I think he takes a loss sometimes. After all, he picked up Joni & Van's tabs in New York when he ran long and pushed the place into Union overtime! >>What Joni should do is scale down her venues, and play the same >>concert >>halls that Jackson played on his last tour. Better acoustics >>and a more >>intimate space. She'd have a better time, and so would the >>audience. I agree wholeheartedly with this. A multi night engagement at a smaller venue allows just as many people to all get good seats. I nominate the Ford Amphitheatre in LA instead of the Greek (which I do love). The Ford is a little smaller, but just as cool. I saw Emmylou Harris there last year and it was great. Anyhow, back to my hole.
