I was a little glib in my initial post, which wasn't my intention. This movie seriously brought to mind how difficult it would be to understand someone you couldn't see, if your hearing was impaired. Or even understanding someone speaking normally if you had impaired vision. Something most of us take for granted. I found I had to really pay attention to this movie, particularly to the context of any conversation. Even speaking on the phone to someone - with an accent different to your own - can be difficult at times. We usually treat the five senses as independent (except perhaps taste and smell) but this made me realise they are far more connected than I had ever given thought to before. Remember that the last time I saw him (Atlanta '98) I walked out in disgust. Last night was a whole 'nuther matter...he played a solid 2 1/2 hour show, full of his new songs (Summer Days & High Water were the highlights for me) and an incredible array of his older material... I sat there in awe listening to spell-binding versions of "Masters of War" (done in a slow sizzling blues), "Rainy Day Women", "Blowin' In The Wind", "Girl From The North Country" (a beautiful version, really nice guitar work by Larry Campbell), "Watchtower", "I Shall Be Released", and the list goes on & on. I don't think I heard anyone say "I wish he would have played____________". He only played 1 Time Out Of Mind tune, "Lovesick" - the bulk of his show was very upbeat. The audience of around 6,000 was really into it, and there were folks from 6 to 60 literally. What an amazing career this man's had and what a powerful effect on the music of a couple generations! And what a band! Campbell & Charlie Sexton performed the yeoman's duty of the music, Campbell especially impressing with his various turns on mandolin, banjo, pedal steel, electric & acoustic guitar. And how exciting to see Dylan (who has a couple of years on Joni) not just performing but truly enjoying himself, relating to the crowd (without having to speak a word), and touring a strong album of powerful songs. Obviously Dylan doesn't have to do anything for income, he's just doing it because he freaking LOVES it. And last night, I did too. Sorry to hear about your hearing loss Bob. Although I don't have any problems with hearing now, a few years ago I went swimming in a pool that was not treated as it should have been with chemicals. So the result for me is a chronic ear infection and I know this can lead to loss or reduced hearing in the future. Warning to everyone: Make sure before you take a swim that the pool you are about to dive into has had bacterium removed etc..... (I awake sometimes from a sound sleep and my ears especially the right one is itching and I can't stop digging and scratching. A bummer and quite a nightmare!) I know I can't change your mind with one email, but my point is that all rap (I would venture to say that not even most of what's available, particularly outside of the major label channels) fits this bill. It's not all socially critical either. Some of it is just plain fun, party music. And some of it is better for a young girl's self esteem than "... Baby, One More Time." A tortoiseshell is patched red, cream and black tho in practice these colours are often intermingled. So a tortie tabby(or Torby) is patched with those colours but the black is in the form of the usual tabby stripes or spots or whorls depending on wheter the tabby is mackeral, spotted, or classic . It is a sex linked characteristic, with these colurs being female. The very rare male in this colour is sterile. I've heard some good stuff (because of what my kids listen to) although I do find it really irritating when some of these artists take other people's music and remix it hiphop style. It was interesting at first, but gets a bit tired after a while - nothing succeeds like excess and all that. (All I can think of off the top of my head is Janet Jackson, who isn't a rap artist, but I find her really annoying - she has overdone the sampling thing by now and she should just move on.) ______________________________________________________________________ Web-hosting solutions for home and business! http://website.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2002 20:26:07 -0500 (EST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: men killing women (NJC) - --- Gil Lamont wrote: Sandy > Denny with Fairport > >Convention did a great version of this on their > Liege & Lief album. > > [Matty Groves] was *the* great crowd pleaser when > Sandy Denny played the Troubadour. > Sandy opened for The Association.
