Yes, Gil, this is quite momentous for Steve and I, who initially bonded on the list over this bit of esoterica. Welcome to our little club and now we have enough members for the t-shirt ;-) Then Nick wrote: > Yeah, but did they ever play at the Sweetwater Cafe in Redondo Beach? I virtually lived at the Sweetwater for a time in around what - '75-77? when it was about the only place for live music by the beach. Don't remember who I saw now - maybe Taj Mahal - but remember being irked at how the "Sweethearts of the Rodeo" ended up getting nearly every show there and didn't like their monopoly. Of course, I had no clue they would go on to great fame in Nashville and country music and Janis would marry Vince Gill! Howard wrote (with some explanation, which I've elided here for sake of space) the following chord sequence for IDKWIS: <> My reaction: Howard -- this is great! -- This is turning out to be quite a challenge for me, having been away from music theory and transcription for so long. But I'm enjoying it immensely. If I'm not mistaken, the published version, a lousy one in many ways -- they even have the melody wrong, at least to my ears, in the scat part -- is in E, Sue's version is (I think) in D, yours is in F, and mine is in Bb (I've misplaced Marion's for the moment). Makes it even more challenging! I've got to listen to the song while I'm looking at *all* our transcriptions, since, as I was giving up on the scat part this afternoon, I would swear, in my head where I was trying to play back the actual version from Clouds, the following happened: During the scat part (really, if you have the published version, from various of the early collections of her first three albums, check it out -- I'm almost certain it's *wrong*), a subtle change in key happens, with the result that the third verse is one full step/key lower than the first two. Probably I'm wrong (I was beginning to question my memory, if not my sanity, towards the end of today's all too brief session on the piano)-- but this kind of change of key during verse changes (is there a term for this?) is quite common -- e.g., Bacharach does it all the time. I'll listen to the "real thing" on Clouds album several times tonight, and have all our chord progressions in front of me, and report back tomorrow or Friday. For me this is exciting stuff, like solving a puzzle or a mystery, or a tough math problem. I have to say I was also really disappointed with this movie (which I rented recently). I loved the originals (I admit to owning the box-set) but this wasn't anywhere near as good. I found it hard to understand what half the apes were saying - now I understand why lip-reading is important to deaf people! The story was weak, and the acting not what I expected from this cast. And how did Helena B-Carter's character alone develop an English accent from American ancestors?! I also thought it was amazing how all the electronics on the space-ship were in perfect working order after hundreds of years! I'd have to give it 1 out of 10 - just for the make-up, and characteristics of the various apes, which were it's only redeeming feature! This is why I have never bothered to see any of the "Ape" movies or many other films (mostly sci-fi) that have the actors' real lips covered. (Cartoons and burkas are also a nightmare for the hearing impaired!) And while I'm no angel, I have never eavesdropped on anyone in my life. --Bob ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2002 22:23:04 -0800 From: "Brenda" Subject: Re: Janis Movie, etc NJC So what do you Janis fans think of Beth Hart?
