I think the list needs an emissary to check this production out and report back before our imaginations go completely wild. I picture now not just one schmuck gliding around, but lots of them, the sea-going guy, the Tin Angel guy, Willy, the priest, the Cactus Tree fellows, a stage full, all lost in melancholy Joni-love, dressed in black, and not watching where they're going... And then what happens? I guess the leached light and wilted grass would be the downside of the arc. I wonder if Joni ever identified with those nuns in the sense that they profess love and yet don't really feel it. (I'm hearing Amelia's line about maybe I've never really loved...) This marked the beginning of my obsession. I saw her again in Montreal at Place des Arts in 1969, Toronto's Massey Hall in 1969, and the Mariposa Festival again in 1969 -- that was her 'green gown year.' Saw her again at Mariposa in 1970 (her 'golden gown year'), which I believe was where she met James Taylor. That year marked the final year she would officially appear at Mariposa (it was believed the stars were ruining the festival). She did an impromptu concert there in 1971 (I caught the last part of BYT as I entered the festival grounds). ... My story is interrupted by about 8 years, during which time I didn't listen to any pop music at all. ... I rediscovered Joni in 1979 with 'Mingus.' Unfortunately, she didn't come to Toronto for her S&L tour. She finally made it back to Toronto in 1983, when she appeared at the CNE Bandshell (not a great concert). Then it was a 15-year wait to see her again. I flew to Vancouver to see her first gig with Dylan/Morrison (and got to meet Wally Breese and Simon Montgomery). Then I saw her again at the Gardens here in Toronto later that year. To tell the truth, none of these concerts matched the first one I saw in 1968 for sheer magic and beauty. I think part of Joni's subtext in ML is that these women are incarcerated/imprisoned because they were the objects of love/lust. THEY were the ones punished because of an unintentional pregancy, etc. I think she can relate to that on a certain level, that women are held to a standard that men are not. While the song obviously IS direct and works (very well) on a literal level, the allegorical level is very powerful as well. One of Joni's many strengths. I think Joni's music lends itself beautifully to this type of theatrical performance. The possibilities for the singer/actor are endless. Many years ago I saw a similar show called Sisters of Mercy based on the music of Leonard Cohen. It was at The Shaw Festival at Niagara-on-the-Lake (one of my favorite places) and starred Gail Garnett, whom we had just seen in Hair in Toronto. The launderies and Magdalene in TI are not at all what they seemed to be in When All The Slave Are Free. In TI they stand for being a woman captive in a prison - in NRH the both the woman and the 'Washing on a line' stand for being saved and for being thrilled by a presence of a healer. Sunday - In NRH's "Two Grey Rooms" sunday is a day for the lover in the song to pass away untill his loved one walks by - but in 'Sunny Sunday' - it's "just another sunny sunday" that'll be followed by "just another sunny monday" and the only waiting is for the "night to fall". The Cadilac - This is realy a special one. I mean, notice that there's always a car in a Joni album. (I may be wrong, but i'm running Joni's albums in my head and by now i found a car mentioned in all of her albums, but i may wrong). The Cadilac in "Ray's Dad's" is where the kids from school made love for the first time while maybe checking out some old hits coming from the radio. That's in NRH. In TI's "Sex Kills" the same car is owned by someone who believes in "just ice" and the scene in the song begins with Joni pulling up behind that cadilac while caught in the red light and waiting for the green. Those are just 3 examples but there are more. I liked what you wrote a lot, but i don't think that Joni has any love in her heart for the nuns in the song. "Why do they call this place our lady of charity" and other lyrics in the song make it abvious that the real holy ones in that place are the "bad girls". The song is a fine example of Joni being an actor and playing a character. One thing i just had to say about the song is that the present time in it is the day Peg Oconnell died and that's when the girl that's telling the story decides to let it be heard. No bells were ringing for Peg, but strange as it may seem, when the "woman i knew just drowned herself" (Song For Sharon) died - the phone kept ringing all day long. So, I woke up this AM and flip over the calendar page (I'll miss you, Miss January!) and see that it's a new month, which can only mean one thing - a new Joni covers compilation gets unleashed to a waiting world! And since February is such a short month, let's get it out there ASAP! :~) My thanks to the folks who chipped in to make it happen: - -Jerry Notaro - -Julian Parker-Burns (one of my cover bro's) - -Lorraine Gervais Here's the rundown: 1. Count Zero - Free Man In Paris: Weird. Imagine a cross between a Dr. Evil/Colonel Klink/Count Chocula vocal, and you're not far from it. But I do think it's pretty cool that they work in a sample of Joni's "Help Me" guitar riff. 2. The Central Park Band - Big Yellow Taxi 3. Dee Felice Trio - Both Sides Now: These are both very solid instrumentals, with a Vince Guaraldi piano feel. 4. Ian Shaw - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: We've heard from Ian before, as he's also done This Flight Tonight. This one is much more jazzed, some long instrumental soloing and Ian does both the Joni & the non-Joni lyrics. A bit tough to take at first, repeated listenings are rewarded for this 11-minute extravaganza. 5. Sato Nanaco - Woodstock: Extrememly haunting & beautiful version of the landmark song. Done by a Japanese singer in a very unique style. Hard to describe, really, except to say that I love it. 6. Gloria Loring - Song To A Seagull: Ex soap star Gloria Loring must be a huge fan, because she's also recorded Chelsea Morning which is tougher to find. She's got a nice emotive voice which serves her well with this one. 7. Lorraine Gervais - A Case of You: Here's my find!! Some of you may recall that I mentioned Lorraine a while ago. She's a west coast jazz singer who recorded a CD with "Blue Motel Room" on it. I was so blown away that I contacted her, and in the midst of our conversation she also sent me this demo of ACOY. A JMDL exclusive! And she told me that it was inspired not by Joni's "Blue" version, but by the BSN rendition. 8. Judy Collins - Chelsea Morning: This is her single version of the song, very different from the previously included track from Living. I thought we had all the Judy already, so thanks to the diva-lovers out there who have all the knowledge (and the records too!) 9. Kings Road - Both Sides Now: Ho Hum. 10. Claude Denjean - Big Yellow Taxi: This one makes me laugh out loud because he uses these synths for taxi horns that sound like farts! This taxi is definitely gas-powered! ;~) 11. Agnes Chan - The Circle Game: This is first of several Asian female covers of TCG. This is the earliest, so it must have been the inspiration for the others. Not outstanding, but not bad. 12. Lorraine Gervais - Blue Motel: I finally get to hear BMR in the jazz-torch song setting of my dreams. Words can't do it justice! Lorraine's CD "Diva's Diversion" is WELL worth finding. 13. Doug Ashdown - Marcie: A 1970 Aussie cover, thanks to John Low for putting me on the track for this one. Pretty obscure, and a subtle, quiet version. 14. The Rhythm Method - Big Yellow Taxi 15. The Rhythm Method - Free Man In Paris: The Rhythm Method is the accapella chorus from Binghamton College in NY. These are so-so, not enough energy for my taste. 16. Peter King - Little Green: A gorgeous instrumental take on one of Joni's prettiest melodies. 17. Kathryn Grayson - Both Sides Now: Oh Gawd! My sincere apologies for this one. Simply dreadful. And what the hell is she singing at the beginning? "oars & plors of angel hair"? I put this one last so you can push the off button after Peter King! :~) So, there you have it...another month's worth in the amazing JMDL collection of Joni covers. Stay tuned to see how to snag a copy for your very own... Bob NP: Kyle Eastwood, "Enter Evening" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 01 Feb 2002 12:52:57 -0600 From: "Sharon L. The good news for Jonatha is that the concert sold out; but the bad news for us concert-goers was that there was very limited seating and we stood the whole time. Ah -- not to worry. I would have stood another five hours if she'd have sung. She was just fabulous, and I urge any of you who like her music to get thee to her concert! Her voice was flawless, acoustic guitar was stupendously gorgeous (I'm not sure what she plays), band is great, she's loaded with energy and funny patter. She's like a pixie with that cute little face and dimples. She noted the last time she played the Belly Up, Jewel was her warm-up. Ha! Jonatha buries her as far as I'm concerned. She had good news to report (I have mixed feelings about it), that she wrote a song for an upcoming sequel to Peter Pan and that after that Disney contacted her to do a song for their upcoming sequel to Dumbo. She was quite aflutter about being summoned by Disney and felt they would chuck her out and go with Elton John or Phil Collins, but they said, no, we want you to do it. I just wonder where this leads her career, I mean all this fraternization with animated children's movies. Kind of steers the public's perception away from serious artist, I think. She didn't say she would sing either song, so I wonder if Disney hires perhaps a more juvenile voice to do the singing. She did two encores at the crowd's insistence and said she would then be available for 'selling crap' and autographs in the back (the warm-up band had made an allusion to their 'selling their crap' in the back). Unfortunately, we couldn't stay although I'd brought my camera and a CD for her to sign. Alas, babysitter issues. Also, that afternoon she'd visited with the radio station here promoting her music and concert (and where I first heard her, sitting in my car at the grocery story, chin dropped to the steering wheel at her amazing song "Secrets and Lies" from 10 Cent Wings) and did an on-air interview and sang. Darn! I only caught the last five minutes of it! I hope to hear from others who've seen her, and really, just go! Excellent movie. Um, what's the name of the show, available for those of us in the U.S. with BBC America, with the little Irish Spright as a host, it's called "So Graham [Something]"? It's very naughty. He sure gets the audience to "open up" about their most embarrassing moments, etc. It does seem that many of his guests are American, but that may be because those are the shows imported over here. The show is a hoot anyway, more "naughty" than X-rated. hugs to all, walt ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 01 Feb 2002 20:19:56 +0000 From: colin Subject: Re: tips for vacationing with the limeys (njc) Gerald Notaro wrote: > Colin, > > I don't know if you have seen Gosford Park yet (do go if you haven't) but the fab Maggie Smith has a wonderful running gag about marmalade in it. I always knew Jerry had a substantial professional background in music but was totally blown away by his vocal and instrumental performances. I still can't believe he was with us for days in New Orleans and never got up to sing at the Howlin Wolf. Reminds me a bit of early Tom Rush and Gordon Lightfoot but better than both! (NJC) I came across this online today at http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/eo/20020131/en/spinal_tap_goes_folkie__1.html I think it sounds great. - --- Spinal Tap Goes Folkie? And the answer, my friend, is, um, breaking like the wind?! That's not exactly what Bobby D. had in mind when he wrote his classic peace anthem. But imagine, if you will, the folk stylings of Dylan as channeled by Spinal Tap and you get an idea of what actor-writer-director Christopher Guest has in store for his next mockumentary. Guest and his Spinal Tap cronies Harry Shearer and Michael McKean are working on a new batch of tunes for a decidedly un-Tap-like subject: '60s folk music. The Saturday Night Live (news - Y! TV) alum is looking to skewer the folk-music scene much like he and his pals poked fun at heavy metal in This Is Spinal Tap, middle-America community theater in 1996's Waiting for Guffman and canine competitions in the Y2K "dogumentary" Best in Show According to the Hollywood Reporter, Guest and longtime collaborator Eugene Levy are working on the script. Guest will also direct the still-untitled project for Castle Rock Entertainment, which produced his last two films. Guest says the story will be another "where-are-they-now" musical journey that will examine the lives of baby-booming folkies well past their prime who are invited out of obscurity for one last shot at the big time. "It deals with three folk acts that get together for a memorial concert at Carnegie Hall because a famous legendary folk manager has died," Guest explains in the Reporter. "These acts were active in the '60s but have been out of business since the early '70s. They must now travel to New York to honor this man who has died and play the concert." Guest says that most of the cast of Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show will also be returning as part of the new ensemble. Best of all, the soundtrack will be a sort-of Spinal Tap Lite, with new tunes written by Guest, Shearer, McKean and Levy, all of whom will also act in the film. "There'll be lots of music and we'll have original songs with everybody actually playing and singing," says Guest. "It'll be the same basic cast you saw in Guffman and Best in Show with some additional people." After his stint on SNL, Guest (the husband of Jamie Lee Curtis) gained a cult following playing Nigel Tufnel in Rob Reiner's classic 1984 mock-rockumentary This is Spinal Tap, a hilarious send-up of early '80s heavy metal bands. He also played the 11-fingered Count Tyron Rugen in Reiner's 1987 fairy tale spoof, The Princess Bride. But it was his parody of small-town American life in Waiting for Guffman that earned Guest critical kudos and a wider audience. He followed up on that success three years later with pretty much the same cast in Best in Show, which took a humorous bite out of the world of dog shows. Levy, a veteran of SCTV, costarred in such '80s hit comedies as Splash and Armed and Dangerous, but is perhaps better known to contemporary audiences as Jim's wacky dad from the American Pie movies. Their new mockumentary starts shooting in Los Angeles this spring. ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2002 #51 **************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
