Hi Walt, > I believe you mentioned to me/us that you share JW (with me) as a songwriting > hero -- what's the name of the book, when did it come out, etc? And is there > a particularly good anthology of his stuff out? The book came out in '98 and the title is "Tunesmith - Inside the Art of Songwriting." I think you'd love this book. Not only is it full of songwriting insight, it is also full of great personal stories and sections about Joni, Carly, Burt and more. It has received rave reviews. The only sheet music I've personally seen on Jimmy was from a special collectors edition "souvenir" book he put out in the 80s, I think, and an old Glen Campbell songbook. I'm sure his songs can be found elsewhere, however, like in a Garfunkel songbook, etc. He has a discussion board on jis website jimmywebb.com where you might inquire about more resources. The people on that board are experts, of course! ;-) >I'm in the market for more sheet music, and JW and Laura Nyro are at the top of my list. Any > recommendations? There is an incredible "Music of Laura Nyro" songbook that is out of print. It covers First Songs through Christmas and the Beads of Sweat. It comes on eBay occasionally but usually goes for a steep price. > I'm thouroughly familiar with JW's stuff from the 60's (e.g., all of his > stuff for the 5th Dimension, and I also had a couple of his own albums, and I > think one he mostly wrote and produced for Art Garfunkel), but lost track > track of him somewhere along the line. Right, I think his circumstances at the time provided her a vivid inspiration for a not uncommon theme that I think most everyone has experienced ("friends" who maybe are dragging you down, taking advantage of you, etc., and the part you play in it all). I have not had nearly the colorful life of Crosby but I could totally relate to the song in many ways, too. Many who have heard >it put it in their top 10 of all time. Kakki turned me on to this album a several years ago and it remains one of my all-time favorites. Kind of a "greatest hits" project but the songs are all redone with mostly Webb solo piano and voice. There are a few instrumental and harmony vocal layers thrown in but is generally sparse. Webb is an amazing talent! Incredible songwriter and piano player, he does a credible job with the vocals. I had heard many of these songs covered by the likes of Glen Campbell, Linda Ronstadt, Shawn Colvin, Richard Harris, and Art Garfunkel. But to hear the songwriter give his own renditions is something special. I too highly recommend this one. Joni's piano style is very guitaristic, and more specifically, Joni-guitaristic -- complete with its dense and complex tight clusters of consonant dissonance embedded within more traditional chord shapes. My own piano playing is very influenced by Joni ... I hear it, others may or may not. I've also been influenced by many others like Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Lyle Mays, Paul Bley, Art Lande, Fred Hersch so the Joni influence may be too many layers down to readily detect. - -Fred Simon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Jan 2002 15:38:06 -0800 From: jan gyn Subject: Fwd: Tips for vacationing with the limeys (njc) Before embarking upon a UK holiday, here are a few things you should know about the Brits and their language differences. This knowledge may save you considerable embarrassment if you learn it well. MAKING FRIENDS If you are fond of someone, you should tell him he is a "great tosser" - he will be touched. The English are a notoriously tactile, demonstrative people, and if you want to fit in you should hold hands with your acquaintances and tossers when you walk down the street. CUSTOMS Brits have been attempting to adopt certain continental customs, suchas the large midday meal followed by a two or three hour siesta, which they call a "wank." If you are late for supper, simply apologize and explain that you were having a wank -- everyone will understand and forgive you. RELAXING One of the most delightful ways to spend an afternoon in Oxford orCambridge is gliding gently down the river in one of their flat-bottomed boats, which you propel using a long pole. This is known as "cottaging." Many of the boats (called "yer-i-nals") are privately owned by the colleges, but there are some places that rent them to the public by the hour. Just tell a professor or policeman that you are interested in doing some cottaging and would like to know where the public yerinals are. The poles must be treated with vegetable oil to protectthem from the water, so it's a good idea to buy a can of Mazola and have it on you when you ask directions to the yerinals. That way people will know you are an experienced cottager. FOOD British cuisine enjoys a well-deserved reputation as the most sublime gastronomic pleasure available to man. Rest assured that a British meal is worth interrupting your afternoon wank for. Few foreigners are aware that there are several grades of meat in the UK. The best cuts of meat, like the best bottles of gin, bear Her Majesty's seal, called the British Stamp of Excellence (BSE). When you go to a fine restaurant, tell your waiter you want BSE beef and won't settle for anything less. If he balks at your request, custom dictates that you jerk your headimperiously back and forth while rolling your eyes to show him who is boss. Once the waiter realizes you are a person of discriminating taste, he may offer to let you peruse the restaurant's list of exquisite British wines. If he does not, you should order one anyway. The best wine grapes grow on the steep, chalky hillsides of Yorkshire and East Anglia -- try an Ely '84 or Ripon '88 for a rare treat indeed. When the bill for your meal comes it will show a suggested amount. Pay whatever you think is fair, unless you plan to dine there again, in which case you should simply walk out; the restaurant host will understand that he should run a tab for you. TRANSPORTATION Public taxis are subsidized by the Her Majesty's Government. A taxi ride in London costs two pounds, no matter how far you travel. If a taxi driver tries to overcharge you, you should yell "I think not, you charlatan!" then grab the nearest policeman (bobby) and have the driver disciplined. It is rarely necessary to take a taxi, though, since bus drivers are required to make detours at patrons' requests. Just board any bus, pay your fare of thruppence (the heavy gold-colored coins are "pence"), and state your destination clearly to the driver, e.g. "Please take me to the British Library." A driver will frequently try to have a bit of harmless fun by pretending he doesn't go to your requested destination. Ignore him, as he is only teasing the tourist (little does he know you're not so ignorant!). For those traveling on a shoestring budget, the London Tube may be the most economical way to get about, especially if you are a woman. Chivalry is alive and well in Britain, and ladies still travel for free on the Tube. Simply take some tokens from the baskets at the base of the escalators or on the platforms; you will find one near any of the state-sponsored Tube musicians. Once on the platform, though, beware! Approaching trains sometimes disturb the large Gappe bats that roost in the tunnels. The Gappes were smuggled into London in the early 19th century by French saboteurs and have proved impossible to exterminate. The announcement "Mind the Gappe!" is a signal that you should grab your hair and look towards the ceiling. Very few people have ever been killed by Gappes, though, and they are considered only a minor drawback to an otherwise excellent means of transportation. AIRPORTS One final note for preferential treatment when you arrive at Heathrow airport, announce that you are a member of Shin Fane (an international Jewish peace organization-the "shin" stands for "shalom"). As savvy travellers know, this little white lie will assure you priority treatment as you make your way through customs. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jan 2002 00:01:12 -0000 From: "Jamie Zubairi" Subject: Re: Joni, Monet and Tom Cruise I saw the film last night.... Make up your own minds and watch it, just for the Joni moments. As with Mr Cruise's performance, I can never believe his sex scenes. Ms Cruz is kinda reduced, but I guess it's not 'her' film. Ms Diaz is maniacal which is great but slightly too much. Other than the weak psychodrama that it turns out to be at the end, it's fine. Kauai *is* out-of-this-world beautiful, and relatively unspoiled compared to other Hawaiian islands. When I lived in Honolulu in the late 80s I heard that it is against the law to build anything on Kauai higher than the highest palm tree, so that is one of the reasons why it has remained the paradise that it is. Next time you have at least a week and a half to spend in Hawaii, I'd recommend the Big Island. It really is BIG -- so you need some time to see all there is to see -- and very rustic. In addition to the still-active volcanoes and Volcanoes National Park, there is sort of a Wild West feel to the place because it has a history of ranching. (Hawaiians called the cowboy ranchers *paniolos*, which is the Hawaiian way of saying *Espaniol*, which is what the cowboys originally were.) I think the Big Island is the Hawaiian island that competes with Kauai for the title of most magical -- one can really feel the spirit of Pele (the goddess, not the soccer player!) everywhere. Molokai, on the other hand, used to be mostly pineapple farms. Not much of a tourist destination when I lived in Hawaii, but that may have changed over the last 10 years or so. --Bob ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Jan 2002 22:20:25 -0500 (EST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: NJC Them Buckleys - --- SCJoniGuy@aol.com wrote: > > I've heard of a "brush" with greatness, but this is > the first time I've heard tell of a "haircut" with > greatness! :~) > That would be a brushcut with greatness (bwa ha ha!) ______________________________________________________________________ Web-hosting solutions for home and business! http://website.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Jan 2002 19:40:52 -0800 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: (NJC) Now: Hawaii Aloha and welcome home Kate! I live in Hawaii a lot in my mind and hope one day to live there for real. Every time I've left the islands I've cried a good deal of the trip home. And Mr. Murphy, you lucky boy, having lived there for a time! It's funny how every island but Oahu gets the raves but that is the island I would like to live on! (I can always hop over to the others on weekends, you know.) Hmm, today as I was looking at the Jimmy Webb songwriting book I saw the opening page "How To Write a Song" by Harry Nielson. It starts out: "If you write it on guitar Place your guitar upon your knee If you write it on piano Don't do that Place your fingers on the strings Of your guitar, not your piano If you write it on piano" I do hear Joni's influence in your music, Fred, and some Lyle, too. I just received the "Homeland" CD tribute to those affected by 9/11 which you recently mentioned for which you wrote the title song. It is SO gorgeous. I hope you can play here in L.A. one of these days so that we can see you live. I highly recommend this beautiful collection which can be ordered at http://www.jazziz.com with proceeds going to the Red Cross. Every song is a complete stunner. There is a kind of melancholy mood in Joni's playing that is reflective, a little other-wordly, whereas, in my opinion, Jackson Browne's piano is more down-to-earth. Joni's music also sounds to me like she is constantly changing keys alot, but Browne is pretty much in one key at a time per song, with minor modulations. One artist I think sounds a bit like Joni in his piano playing is Marc Cohn. I'm curious if he is a fan of hers or not, because I think I hear a similarity there on some of the tracks from his three albums. It always bugged me a bit, though, when he mentions W.C. Handy in "Walking in Memphis", because it makes me think of Joni's line, "W.C. Handy, I'm rich and I'm...." from "Old Furry Sings the Blues." Did he mention W.C. Handy because he got the idea from her? I wonder. Abbymusique ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Jan 2002 20:56:30 -0800 (PST) From: CHRIS TREACY Subject: Why No Christine Mcvie? NJC Apparently because she wants it this way. From what I've read, going on with more Fleetwood Mac is the last thing Christine wants to do - a door it took her years to shut that she will not willingly reopen. She is secluded in retirement, and that's how she wants her life now - quiet and private. No more clashing egos, no more remnants of stale romances, no more drug and alcohol abuse destroying people around her...can you blame the gal? If you read about the band dynamic, it seems as though Mick has a way of guilting these folks to get together and make 'one more record' every few years...Christine just isn't putting up with it anymore. It's HIS cross to bear. - -Chris, a huge FM fan, and very curious to hear this new record which, by the way, was slapped together haphazardly in a VERY SHORT period of time. (And I am not talking about a weekend in Waikiki here!) It's as if there is a sort of spiritual energy emanating from the land that can touch you very deeply, and present you with all kinds of phenomena -- thoughts, dreams, feelings, and, like Kakki, supernatural experiences -- which can really take you by surprise. Hawaii attracts many more New Age-y people than I, and one of them once told me that Hawaii is one of the magical points, or something like that, on the planet. I believe it. It has a magic (that word again) that is uniquely its own, and feels unlike anything I have ever read about or seen on film. And I am not talking about some kind of euphoria in paradise here, because the sensation isn't always blissful or even positive. Poor James Michener wrote about 80 thousand pages on the subject of Hawaii and still didn't capture exactly what it is about the place that is so different from the rest of the world. (Although his "Hawaii" is probably one of the best places to start if you want to begin to understand the place. He spends about 20 thousand pages on the geological formation of the islands, then moves on to the formation of plant and animal life, then the arrival of the first people from faraway Tahiti, the Europeans, then the Chinese and, 100 years later, the Japanese.) << It's funny how every island but Oahu gets the raves but that is the island I would like to live on! (I can always hop over to the others on weekends, you know.) >> You could do woise that Oahu, Kakki! And unless you wanted to switch careers and work in the hospitality biz, it would be the logical place to live. I lived on Diamond Head (yes, there are apartments there -- they just never show up in the postcard photos), about a 10 minute walk from the heart of Waikiki. The odd thing about living and working in Hawaii, though, is that you get up every day and go to work while thousands of people on vacation arrive and leave every day. Makes for a mean case of snorkel envy! In general, wages are much lower there, but there is the temptation to spend money as if you're on vacation all the time. And as far as hopping over to the other islands on weekends, I was surprised that there were no ferries! So usually, island hopping in Hawaii means flying, often in little planes. I know lots of people hate small planes, but the view as you pass over other islands is so spectacular, it is intoxicating and just unforgettable. (Plus I would rather be on a small plane if the pilot suddenly keeled over and died or something, and I had to do a Karen Black and take control of the aircraft and like, land it in Maui.) --Bob ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jan 2002 00:48:06 EST From: Murphycopy@aol.com Subject: Re: Why No Christine Mcvie? Many times before I went there I heard such stories from others, including many who would be the last people one would think to be talkin' about the spirits. I thought maybe it was a quaint local custom. Everyone I knew from Hawaii, people who ranged from the fundamentally religious to the total non-religious to hard-boiled war veterans and other cynics not only believed in the spirits there, it was a fact of life to them. After my own experience, (and no, I was not on any "mood enhancers" ;-) I mentioned it quietly to a few close Hawaii friends and they treated it very matter of factly and had Hawaiian words for my particular experience which I have long forgotten. But one doesn't have to have a specific experience to feel the phenomena surrounding you everywhere there. There IS something there beyond the stunning physical beauty and it is unlike any other place I've ever visited or known about. I don't know if I told you, but when Mikey was only 18mos. old we went to Hawaii and stayed on Oahu for a few days and then 5 days in Maui. I wanted to check out the other islands but there was no time. I had a really good time there, but I was struck with how expensive it is (always true on an island I guess) and how touristy. It seemd like EVERYONE gets a rental car with their deal which is screwy. Traffic was crazy on Maui esp. since we were there during that total solar eclipse. We stressed about where to go see it on the island and wather to go to the south tip (supposedly the best place) or up to Haleakala or to rent a boat and go out on the sea. As it turned out wwe stayed right at our hotel and turned on the tv eearly to wait for the countdown and then opened our door to the balcony and were able to lay in bed and watch the whole thing happen (out the door and on TV) b4 the clouds swallowed the whole thing up. As it turned out almost everywhere on the island was totally clouded up except where we were. I AM so lucky, but then you ALL knew that! Also we went to Molokai which was the crecent shaped island off of Maui and went skin diving. It was beautiful there. I remember that day I had occasion to try the fabled Maui Wowie and ended up getting lost on that tiny island. Its TRUE what they say... lmao. It was great to see you and Jeff and the gang in LA. Love Paz P.S. Alison great to finally hear from you. I thought perhaps you had gone into seclusion to decompress from SO much fun. Glad you had a good B-Day. Welcome to the Geriatric ward!
