I think Tim Buckley's live one, Dream Letter, has to qualify as a pretty good introductory album too, although I certainly find the full-length flow of Goodbye And Hello and Greetings From L.A. indescribably pleasurable to listen to. Some of his other albums are: Happy Sad, Lorca, Starsailor, Peel Sessions '68 (2), Honeyman, Sefronia, Blue Afternoon and Look At The Fool. His cover of Fred Neil's Dolphins is a joy to hear. I've never listened to his son's music, but I did cut his hair once. He was a brash kid. Obviously they both died way to early. (njc) hi some folks might remember a while ago i asked for opinions about an ovation guitar which was for sale here. the selling price was 5,000 rands (now around USD 435 - it was usd500 at that stage) anyhow, i decided it was just too much for me to spend on an ovation at that stage. so last friday im browsing through the classifieds, & what do i see - another ovation of the same model (celebrity deluxe) on sale for 3,000 rand!! (USD 260). my first thought was that it must be in really bad condition, but i decided to go & take a look.. guess what, it was absolutely immaculate, just over a year old (the seller still had the purchase receipt), and virtually unplayed. this morning i phoned a music shop to get an idea of the new retail price - R 9,500!! (USD825). guess i got a real bargain :-) ok - so its *not* the worlds greatest guitar, but its a damn sight better than anything else youd get here for that price :-) ron ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Jan 2002 04:47:29 EST From: FredNow@aol.com Subject: Re: (njc) Advice concerning Miles Davis BigWaltinSF@aol.com asks: >Joni is worshipful of Miles Davis, as is almost everyone I've ever heard >mention him (musically, at least); and Joni particularly likes his >"Nefertiti". NEFERTITI is beautiful, but I would strongly recommend starting with KIND OF BLUE. There are several versions on CD, make sure you get catalogue number CK64935 (has additional alternate take of "Flamenco Sketches") because not only has it been remastered (big improvement) but a speed/pitch error on three of the six tunes has now been corrected. It's all explained in the liner notes that start on the back of the CD. - -Fred Simon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Jan 2002 12:36:33 -0000 From: "Laurent Olszer" Subject: Eric Burdon, NJC There's been some talk about Eric Burdon. A lot of people like the Animals and think that Eric went downhill from there (War, etc...) The 2 cents I would like to add is that when I saw him at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach in 1982 it was one of the best concerts I have ever attended, and its memories are still vivid. There were 2 keyboardists and it was just incredible. I had the opportunity to see him several times afterwards and was never disappointed. In fact, a former college dorm-mate became his manager, I don't know whether she still is. I've been looking for live recordings of this era and so far the 76 Live at the Roxy is one of the hottest Erics in my collection. Whenever an interviewer tries to 'pry' about those sorts of things, Joni's quick to shut it down or divert. So the only clues we get are typically from others who let something slip tangentially. I figured you'd appreciate that little illumination on one of your FTR songs! ;~) I suppose the Joni-Jackson relationship is so ugly in the wake of "Not to Blame" and the resulting tabloids that it's not mentioned much. As for "Trouble Child", I really don't think it's ONLY about Crosby. Surely his experiences were an influence. Like so many of her songs, it's a composite (which is how WE can relate to it) that folks want to point at an individual. Then I read our local newspaper and see that Eric will be performing at our block party this Friday night. What a coincidence!!!!! The paper says he won't be performing any songs from his new album since it hasn't been officially published yet. He doesn't want to take any chances on bootlegs being made. So he'll be singing "House of the Rising Sun", "Spill the Wine", "We Got to Get Out of This Place", and a few other oldies. Also performing at the block party is Mickey Thomas from Starship. I'm thouroughly familiar with JW's stuff from the 60's (e.g., all of his stuff for the 5th Dimension, and I also had a couple of his own albums, and I think one he mostly wrote and produced for Art Garfunkel), but lost track track of him somewhere along the line. That fascinates me. When I got C&S, I knew little of JM's personal life, and I assumed she was talking to someone she knew who was in a mental hospital, and the "friends and foes who opened and closed" him were shrinks!
