Don't tell my grandmother, but I remember little of the story except that Christ, when he passed under the tree, stopped and looked up and said "Zachaeus, you come down". I think they went out to lunch then and Zachaeus expressed doubts about the whole save- the- world bit, and that Zachaeus, whose name I probably misspell here wasn't really considered fit lunch company for the son of God, was a tax collector... but then I may be confused with Nicodemus there, another song, another story. The Joni song always makes me remember bible camp and Sunday school. There were hand gestures to go along with the song and we all shook our pointer fingers in the air and looked stern and stamped our feet three times for the "you come down". I don't even have a Bible tonight to look the thing up. And while I'm mentioning grandmothers, I noticed in my hometown paper over Christmas an article about the restoration of a little schoolhouse in a little place called Coe Hill in Ontario, here. Apparently Joni's grandmother attended school there, and there's a photo of her and a bit of a shrine to Joan. That's about thirty miles of mainly dirt (snow) road from where I am tonight and I'm not likely to get there soon. Anybody know anything about this lady? Anyway, a belated best new year to all. greenstudio, up a sycamore, looking through the leaves.... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Jan 2002 10:06:27 +0100 From: M.Russell@iaea.org Subject: request for lyrics Lately, almost every time I sit down with an instrument something new happens - melodies and chord progressions just come to me out of the blue - and I've got so much stuff now that I'm having trouble keeping track of it all! I've been reading a book lately by Salley Vickers, "Miss Garnet's Angel"; it's about the story of a middle aged English woman who retires in Venice, where her life will have a new start. It's also about the Biblical story of Toby and the Archangel Raphael. At some point in the book we're told about the "Good religion" of Zarathustra: "we have to be vigilant against the things which conspire against the life force - anger, brutality and dishonesty." These words immediately made me think of "The three great stimulants" lyrics. I'm sure there's something here: Joni's frequent allusions to Biblical stories, her admiration for Nietzsche (reference to his Zarathustra book), the three things which conspire against life force... Just thought that anyone might volunteer to make some order in my random thoughts. I'm sure there's something here: Joni's frequent allusions to > Biblical stories, her admiration for Nietzsche (reference to his Zarathustra > book), the three things which conspire against life force... What a great quote, and what synchronically! This song has been much on my mind lately, especially after a recent listening to the version of the TGS from the Rock Master Class recording (thanks as always, to Mr. Muller). Seems likely enough that this is an idea she may have adapted from Nietzsche, but its been rolling around in my brain that Joni may have pinched "artifice, brutality and innocence" from Carl Jung. Or at least "brutality and innocence"--artifice may be JM's addition. (Or maybe it all sprang from her head independently . . .) In any case, I have this vague notion from reading some Jung long ago that he made a point similar to that in the TGS--that "the exhausted " or unhealthy ones tend to retreat into a faux innocence or become brutal in their dealings with other humans. Of course there is Jung's familiar quote that "sentimentality is a superstructure erected upon brutality" but I think he was much more explicit about the connection between brutality and innocence. I've been meaning to research this a bit-- I've put "re-read Jung" on my to-do list, but somehow haven't quite gotten to that yet. Perhaps there is a Jungian jmdler who can illuminate this more. Anyway--thanks for sharing that quote--wonder if this is a point of commonality between Nietzsche and Jung? I'll add my request for a learned volunteer to step forward. Regards, Catherine T. NP: Rebecca Campbell, "Brand New Day" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Jan 2002 08:48:42 EST From: MGVal@aol.com Subject: A Beautiful Mind, (NJC) In a rare move on my part, I went to see this movie the other day with an area, (sorta), list member. I have a close friend who suffers from the same problem, so the story line had a great deal of personal content for me. Russell Crowe's acting was wonderful. The tics, the speech patterns, the mannerisms; these were all perfect. Sadly, it was great acting within a highly sanitized version of Nash's life. It was like a Beef Wellington with a superb piece filet mignon wrapped in a BisQuick crust. Or a great Stilton served on Wonder Bread. Or a gruyere cheese omelet made with canned spinach. I could go on but my stomach rumblings will wake the household and the analogies have more of a bearing on my New Year's diet than the movie I'm trying to write about! I thought that the movie plodded in the first half, although there were some marvelous camera techniques by Ron Howard to depict Nash's genius. I didn't think that Howard adequately made us feel the spark and bond between the Mr. and Mrs. and past that, the true trials of maintaining a relationship when one partner suffers from a mental illness stayed unexplored. Still, I was struck by how Howard portrayed the manifestation of Nash's growing schizophrenia. I've always been a fan or at least sympathetic to alternate realities and you have to wonder at the medical world's instant leap to squash 'em and drug 'em up. And if that fails, zap the heck outta them. And when the meds kick in, the alternative realities, (aka hallucinations), go packing and the artist stops creating. What happens next beyond getting scruffy and watching your genius move farther and farther out of reach? I think that this film does not begin to catch the true pain and horror of paranoid schizophrenia. Nash comes off as an arrogant, albeit lovable quirky kinda guy with a penchant for newsprint wallpaper and string art. It doesn't begin to capture the mean and vicious persona that emerges when paranoid schizophrenia is in full bloom. The family always has a home to live in, Mrs. Nash always has a funky new pair of espadrilles to wear and his colleagues just accept him for being a bit odd. Still, even with these shortcomings, it's a powerful film. A day later and I'm still thinking a lot about art and genius and what makes some of us go tick..tock and others of us go ...ockt itck. I didn't know anything about Nash, so I had no preconceptions, didn't know what to expect. Crowe was great...shoo in for the Oscar, who always loves a mental case. Likewise the film will win Best Picture, both as a reward for Ron Howard's return to form and for the triumph of the human spirit and blah blah. Jennifer Connelly won't win anything, except for my undying affection...WOOF indeed! The script was very well-done, veered a bit into cliche, the makeup was excellent and really allows you to see these characters age. My minor complaint...Crowe walks in to teach his class in a tight T-shirt, and he's buff as hell. Here's a guy who can't find time to eat or even practice personal hygiene, and he's got pecs & arms like he hits the gym as often as he rips out magazine pics. But it IS a minor complaint. I hate it when such things are sanitized. It just confirms the cynical adage that normal people can't handle very much reality. The reality of schizophrenia is people in jail (mentally ill people are put in jail quite often), on the street, perhaps in the hospital, or living in some sort of sheltered situation, quite possibly on disability. Few people, at least in the throes of a significant episode, can cope much better than this. Just see E. Fuller Torrey's Surviving Schizophrenia or Carol North's autobiography, Welcome Silence. One of the highest-functioning persons with schizophrenia I know of is Frederick Frese, and he's had problems too. He's got an article on coping with schizophrenia: http://www.mentalhealth.com/story/p52-sc04.html he says that "For those of us who have returned and have found that we are not as welcome as we would like to be, we have a challenge. We must work together to change the image we have with those in what I sometimes refer to as the "the chronically normal community." As more and more of us are becoming open about the nature of our disability, we have an obligation to share with others as much as we can about mental illness so that there is less fear and greater understanding and acceptance." I really don't see how sanitized movies help achieve that goal. If someone says, e.g., "open D' tuning", does it mean you tune the strings to play only, say D, F#, A and their octaves? Also, what does a "modal" tuning mean? Thanks for your patience; it's just that although I sorta play the piano, I've always been mystified by the guitar -- maybe because I think too linearly. A friend wayyyyyy back in college (around '74) showed me how to play three chords (D, A7 and G, I think) so I could strum along with "Carey", but I had a strong feeling I'd never develop the intuitional ease with guitar that I had with the piano -- admittedly, I didn't try very hard. On another topic -- I recently recived my copy of "Joni Mitchell anthology", and I was wondering: Who chooses the songs for these things?! Some of the choices were obvious -- they were the songs that "everyone knows" (Chelsea Morning, Both Sides Now yadayadayada) -- but WHY would they put only one song from FTR (!!!!) and one from Hejira (!!!!!), while they put in three from DJRD (to my delight -- I love the album, but wasn't it less popular than Hejira?) -- they skip Mingus altogether, and the anthology stops at WTRF -- and they included the title song, Chinese Cafe and Solid Love -- did they just go on the basis of the singles that were released, or what? But I'm happy enough -- it has "Jerico" (my favorite of all JMs) and "I don't Know Where I Stand" (my second favorite). Oh, one other thing (sorry, but I've been lurking for a while) -- I doubt Joni writes the arrangements for piano that shows up in the various sheet music books that come out -- but has anyone ever noticed that they occasionally contain slight errors, and that these remain uncorrected for all eternity -- once an arrangement comes out, it stays that way? (Sorry I can't be more specific -- but I remember someone long ago pointing out that there was a transcriptional error in Blonde In The Bleachers -- they were right, I'd had that itchy feeling that something sounded not quite right in the opening sequence of the song when I played it as written. And in the arrangement in the Anthology for IDKWIS, I'm pretty sure there are missing chords, or that the arrangement is way oversimplified...) When oh when will the two volume set of "all" of her songs come out that I've heard rumors about? Hugs all around and a Happy New Year, Walt ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Jan 2002 14:54:28 EST From: AsharaJM@aol.com Subject: RE: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING... I already posted about this because I was puzzled how she would pick solo piano tunes at a benefit concert where the majority of the audience didn't come to see her but Willy Nelson, and then wonder why they were not paying attention. But, we'd like your permission to dance together." "Absolutely not," says the rabbi. "It's immodest. Men and women always dance separately." Hello, Colin and Jimmy, thanks for your concern. Yes, things have been pretty tense around Sydney since Christmas with serious fires burning from the Hunter Valley in the north right down the South Coast, even in some suburbs of Sydney and, of course, in the Blue Mountains where I live. Living in the upper part of the Blue Mountains we have so far been relatively safe from the fires. Tons of smoke though and two weeks of tension and high alert. But, working in the lower Mountains, Ive had to travel down through the 'danger' zone each day. Fortunately the firefighters (many from inter-state - weve had a number of South Australian units here in the Mountains) are highly trained and this, plus the technology available, has resulted in less property damage than expected and no loss of life at this stage. There is a big American designed helicopter called Elvis that has become a bit of an icon here in the last couple of weeks holds an absolutely phenomenal amount of water and two more have just been leased. They arrived from the US yesterday. My brother and his wife were evacuated from their home in the lower Mountains on Boxing Day and came within a whisker of losing their house. They have lived in this area for nearly 30 years and this was their worst fire experience all their garden, fences etc. burnt but the house saved! The weather has been so hot and dry since before Christmas but last Sunday night we had a very heavy fall of rain that has relieved the situation here quite a bit. For the moment anyway! Serious fires are still burning on the South Coast however. Thanks for your thoughts though guys. Theyre really appreciated.
