If you haven't heard this you should. Download it from www.rain.org\~guyb Save the file NY Sweet Joni Live 1971.MP3 to your local machine. Its about 3MB in size, and is made as a 192K MP3 which, frankly sounds as good as the original. All the recordings I could find all seem to come from the same performance - 1971 (?) Bakersfield, CA. It is an audience recording, and before the song NY tells the audience he has never played this song before to anyone. Perhaps this is the one and only performance of it in existence. Maybe some NY expert can enlighten me. I'll leave the MP3 up at rain.org for a week or so. Enjoy. Sweet Joni, from Saskatoon. Here's a ring for your finger. It looks like the sun but feels like the moon. Sweet Joni, from Saskatoon. Don't go, don't go too soon. Who lives in an old hotel? Near the ancient ruins. Only time can tell, time can tell. Go easy the doorman said. The floor is slippery. So watch your head. The message read. Sweet Joni, from Saskatoon. Here's a ring for your finger. It shines like the sun but feels like the moon. Sweet Joni, from Saskatoon. Don't go, don't go too soon. Lyrics by Neil Young (c) Broken Arrow Music 1971 Merry Xmas and a happy, happy new year to all at JMDL from GUY ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Dec 2001 23:35:20 +0100 From: "Mario De Tullio" Subject: post-Xmas greetings (njc) Hi all, I spent part of my holydays going back through the digests I had left behind during the last few weeks, so here are some late comments... I noticed that, while writing one of his posts, Bob Muller was listening to a CD by Roberto Ottaviano. I was favourably impressed, as Roberto was born in the same little town where I live (Bari, South-East Italy) and, when I was very young, he gave me some advice about saxophone playing (then I decided to switch to oboe, but this is a different story). I am very pleased to see that his music crossed the Ocean and that someone appreciates it in South Carolina! I also enjoyed very much Rose's description of her family party. It reinforced my opinion that Italians living outside Italy are more genuinely Italian than ourselves... My best wishes to all of you, and especially to WallyK both for his birthday and for the present difficult state of things in his beautiful country. I don't want to start a new boring political thread, but I really don't understand what is going on in Argentina and who is taking advantage of this awful situation. Have a great 2002! I think you misunderstood, Warren. there is no joni only rule. There are however TWO lists. One is for ONLY JONI stuff and the other is a free for all (and much more interesting for me). The way the two lists work is that nything marked NJC(no joni content) will not go to the ONLY JONI list. Anything without the NJC tag in subject headin will go to the ONLY JONI list. So if you desire ONLY JONI, that would be the list you sign up to. However, as the people on these lists are human, the NJC tag is left off posts that should have it on. Not only that but Only Joni's who moan about this also do it themselves! And people who are not on the Only Joni often moan about the subjects discussed on the free for all list! The lists suit everybody, including those who like to find fault! Whilst I do think the replies to the fatcat were a bit harsh, i undertsand them cos it irks me too that some people can find the time to bitch but not to contibute to the list in a more uplifting or interesting way. It would help anyone on this list to realise that we are all human, imperfect and prone to making mistakes. If we cannot accept imperfection in our fellows then perhaps this is not the list for us.(but then it would seem no where would be for us as we live in an imperfect world) bw colin ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Dec 2001 22:48:54 +0000 From: colin Subject: Re: NJC Re: joni only content [ironically njc] > When I first > signed on and i read all these PERSONAL posts I wanted to puke. personal posts? never saw any. you mean this list isn't just about 'your notches' or 'you're notches' and some braod called Joni? The mocha cake was store-bought and looked better than it tasted (although it tasted... not bad, but not as good as the ones I sometimes buy from the crazy French baker in our neighbourhood!) The cranberry sauce was easy enough for people like me (who really don't enjoy cooking all that much) to handle without any trouble and was right on the bag of cranberries I bought - you put the berries in a pot, pour over them a cup of sugar and a cup of water. You grate the zest of one orange over the lot, then bring the pot to a boil while stirring regularly, until the berries pop - this takes about five minutes, maybe a bit longer. A problem with email, from someone you don't know, is that it is "spoken" by the listener. Mack seems to have taken it very personally, and apparently with his own anger, not mine. I realize Mack only speaks for himself. His comments on my post remind me of Joni's line about Jerry Falwell, etc. -- preaching love like hate. Colin might want to refresh his perspective too; his words are not mine. To respond to other comments, I made no reference to Christmas. My comments (nor this site) have nothing to do with a religious holiday. My point is this: 7 of the 10 posts today are NJC (not counting posts responding to my post). Digest #391 had 10 of 24 posts NJC; # 393 had 10 of 16 posts NJC. If I had saved others, I'm sure they would be similar. My thanks to Paul and others who understood my comments. I have a busy life, as others do, and preferrred not to scroll through so many discussions about nothing related to JM. I had looked forward to the Discussion List, as I too have loved Joni's work, since 1968. And I looked forward to sharing info/opinions about her and her magnificent art. I have two copies of her LP's, one set worn and scratchy; every cassette and every CD. I have every songbook published and play her songs (self-taught & poorly) on my guitar. I have notified Simon of two concerts not on his Appearances list that I attended, and for which I have photos and ticket stubs. I have photos of her leaving the hotel after a concert. I sat through a snowstorm at Red Rocks in Denver for hours waiting for her to (not) appear. I have the copy of Architectural Digest that featured a layout of her home. I buy every piece of music related to her. (Is Caroline Lavelle listed as covering her "A Case of You"? Produced years ago by William Orbit.) I have an autographed print of her oil painting hanging in my living room. I do my paintings to her music. I'm not special, I'm sure you all have similar stories. That was what was so exciting to me in finding this forum. I thought I had a friend in a JM fan. She has been a part of my life too. I appreciate the posts relating to Joni Mitchell that are on the digest, and I am thrilled to find photos and info from people who are apparently "in the know" about her professionally, and keep us posted on upcoming events. The entire website is fabulous and I am grateful to those who make it possible. I appreciated the warm welcome I received when I first logged in. I guess I thought this particular DL/digest was something else, rather than a chat room for so many non-related subjects and very personal email. That's fine, I can unsubscribe. It's pretty sensitive territory, you should have a warning label for all newcomers. This is way too long and personal. I thought I knew better than to get into an argument. Hello, I'm going to send this to everyone and repeat the suggestion I made that we should switch the flag to JC for Joni content. A couple of people agreed with this, then I didn't hear anything more. I assume when you talk about NJC posts, you mean posts that should have been labeled NJC but were not. I think people on only-joni should only get email related to joni. if that's not happening, it needs to be fixed. on another listserv I am on, the list owner warns people when things get off topic. plus, she encourages people to send personal replies off list. I didn't mean to offend when I mentioned Christmas. I just thought the timing was awfully coincidental and I wasn't sure if that's what you were objecting to. I think this is an easy technical fix, and it won't affect anyone who wants NJC content, so I say it's worth a try.
