Am emerging from the dark recesses before its too late to inform/remind Seattle listers that the portraits from Annie Leibowitz's "Woman" are currently on display at the Seattle Art Museum. Recently took an intensive software course, and was discussing music with the woman at the computer next to me, and as all roads lead to Joan , I mentioned JM, and my classmate lit right up and exclaimed "The most beautiful portrait in the Annie Leibowitz exhibit is Joni Mitchell's!" So if any of you Northwesterners want to gaze upon the most beautiful portrait for yourself, the exhibit is at SAM until January 6th. Also, as a public service to Jane Siberry fans on the list (and I know you're out there), JS is scheduled to perform live on Public Radio International's "Echoes" program today/tomorrow (Tuesday, Dec. 18th.) You can find a station broadcasting or webcasting by clicking around at www.echoes.org. (Just make sure you find one that broadcasts the program every day so you get the right program). I know she isn't everyone's cup of whatever, but I saw her live twice week before last, and am still on a post concert high the likes of which I haven't had since I met this other blonde Canadian singing J-woman. Adios friends, and happy holidays to you all! Anyone? The URL references you give were typed in by WallyB, Howard, and probably Sue or Les, respectively. The first two probably had as their source the printed lyrics from the albums. I'm pretty sure that Sue is of the opinion that the correct words are "You're notches" so probably made that correction. But to further confuse the issue, I think the real words might be: "Your notch is liberation, doll" That's what I have always heard when I've listened to this song. "You're notches, liberation doll" sort of makes sense if the conversation between her and the man is about women in general. "your notches liberation doll" makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever. There many errors in the lyrics printed with her albums which were then unfortunately carried over completely into the Lyrics book. It's too bad that Joni didn't have time to go over the book before it was published and make corrections. I hope she will do that someday! Maybe she doesn't even know that there are so many mistakes. I know Howard made an attempt at one point to go through all the lyrics and make corrections. We could have a whole separate discussion list on what all the corrections should be! It would be an interesting exercise. When we were banding the babies, we wore very thick leather gloves to protect our hands - those beaks are really sharp, and very strong, not to mention their feet which have sharp claws! But despite all that, Little Blue Penguins are very cute to look at. You can see a picture here: http://www.naturespic.com/wildlife1/4567.html Putting your head inside a cave where penguins are nesting is not fun, unless you have no sense of smell, and don't mind getting covered in penguin poo and old fish guts. Not to mention getting attacked by the parents, who don't appreciate that what you doing will ultimately benefit their babies. All they see is some weirdly dressed human, grabbing their baby and adorning it with completely unnecessary plastic accessories. Sort of like a giant body piercer grabbing your teenager, and putting a ring through their nose, then thrusting them back into the house. Playing with baby penguins may "sound" like fun, but the reality is a long, loooooong way from the romantic image! And yes, Wally, we are on about the same latitude, but you're a little further north, I think. The New Zealand landscape is pretty spectacular, and popular with movie makers, because there are such a variety of different landscapes within a very small area. Vertical Limit was filmed in NZ because the Southern Alps look so much like the Himalayas, but they're only an hour's helicopter ride from a warm hotel and well-stocked bar! I guess New Zealand is one of the few places in the world where you can be snow skiing in the morning, and swimming with dolphins in the afternoon, with only a couple of hours drive in between. I'm very far behind these days, so please forgive me if this has already been posted. jody Costello, Williams Tape Crossroads Session for CMT Michael Gray 12/06/2001 View the CMT Crossroads flipbook. bAll I can say is, look out Conway and Loretta.b? Elvis Costello issued that humorous warning during a recent television taping with Lucinda Williams. The two songwriting icons achieved their own Conway-and-Loretta-style chemistry, singing together, backing each other, swapping stories and talking about their country influences for what will become the first installment of a new series, CMT Crossroads, airing Jan. 13 on CMT. Stan Lynch, former drummer for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, will host. Taped Nov. 5 in New York, the hour-long show is in post-production now. Editing decisions will determine the song sequence and final contents of the show, but by all accounts Costello and Williams gave producers plenty to choose from. The CMT Crossroads series seeks to demonstrate the intersection of country music and other genres such as rock, rap and pop, by bringing together artists who come from diverse musical backgrounds. Hank Williams Jr. and rap-rock star Kid Rock will collaborate in mid-December in Nashville for a future episode. Lucinda Williams is best known to mainstream country fans for writing Mary Chapin Carpenterbs bPassionate Kisses,b? which earned Williams a Grammy for best country song in 1993. She also has penned songs for Patty Loveless (bThe Nightbs Too Longb?), Emmylou Harris (bSweet Old World,b? bCrescent Cityb?) and Tom Petty (bChanged the Locksb?). As a recording artist, Williams won the Grammy for best contemporary folk album for her breakthrough 1998 CD, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. Highly respected in roots and rock music circles, Williams mostly has been a Music Row outsider. Her sound is too raw and edgy for todaybs refined country airwaves. bI do write country songs,b? she insisted at the taping, following a performance of bBlue,b? a quiet weeper from her current album, Essence. bI just donbt write country songs that get played on country radio.b? Costello jumped in with his own assessment of contemporary country radio: bYeah, they sort of have forgotten what they are.b? bSee, thatbs the whole point of [this show],b? Williams replied, bhow you define country music. In my mind itbs Hank Williams [Sr.] and Loretta Lynn.b? During the shoot, Williams cited Bobbie Gentry as an early influence. Gentry is the writer and performer of the 1967 country-pop smash bOde to Billie Joe,b? which features vivid, haunting Southern imagery, a characteristic that also has become a trademark of Williamsb work. bIt was really original stuff, the stuff she was doing,b? Williams said of Gentry. bShe was writing her own songs. She was one of the first female singers I was influenced by who sang in a lower register. I felt real comfortable with that, because before that I was listening to singers like Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez. They all had these beautiful high voices. Then here comes Bobbie Gentry, and she had this lower, kind of smoky voice. It was kind of country, but it wasnbt typical country. It was a blend. I just really identified with it.b? Costello, a native of Liverpool, England, lives in Ireland and is hardly a country artist. The singer-songwriter long has had an affinity with Nashville, however. He recorded his 1981 country covers album, Almost Blue, there with legendary country producer Billy Sherrill. During the taping, Costello also recalled meeting and working with Johnny Cash and George Jones, who have recorded his songs, and he talked about his own admiration for Hank Willams Sr., praising bthe economy of expression in his songs and the true, soulful feeling that comes in them.b? Costello covered bWild Horses,b? a country-flavored Rolling Stones number, for possible inclusion in the show. He also treated the New York audience to a pair of his own songs -- bIndoor Fireworksb? and bPoisoned Roseb? -- from his rootsy 1986 album, King of America, and he debuted a new, unfinished song that he said he is writing for Lucinda Williams to sing someday. Inevitably, however, not all performances will make it into the showbs final cut. More details about the actual contents of CMT Crossroadsb first installment will be available closer to air date. ____________________________________________ Caps Ticket Certificates - The Coolest Gift Ideal for All Occasions www.washingtoncaps.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Dec 2001 08:42:41 -0800 From: Julius Raymond Subject: Re: Jonifest CD Tree Thank you kindly, Bob. I think this list could get me some intersting responses. As a few of you probably know already, I'm an artist. I'm starting a new series based on mondegreens. Problem is, I can't come up with many good ones! A mondegreen is a mishearing of a word or phrase which results in a new meaning being generated. Hearing "youth in Asia" instead of euthenasia is a classic example. What I would like from you is examples of mondegreens. They can be things that you or a friend, family member, etc. misheard, or if you're looking for something to do, think some up! They don't necessarily have to be officially mondegreens either. Any slippage of language, even written language, is potentially useful for me. Thanks for your help, and I return you to your regularly scheduled programming. Tyler Check out Yahoo! Some years, muscadel faces down frost; green thrives; the crops don't fail, sometimes a man aims high, and all goes well. A people sometimes will step back from war; elect an honest man; decide they care enough, that they can't leave some stranger poor. Some men become what they were born for. Sometimes our best efforts do not go amiss; sometimes we do as we meant to. The sun will sometimes melt a field of sorrow that seemed hard frozen: may it happen for you. A Lennon tribute called "Come Together" just aired. It was probably taped in december 2001. One of the artists was a short-haired blonde lady who sang Strawberry Field. There were no credits. Does anyone know who she is? It dawned on me that it is a "concept album", meaning there is a common thread all across it. (I personally never buy compilations because one loses the coherence and the thread of the original albums). Actually, we've heard about Concept Albums for years in rock magazine articles. Has this concept ever being defined? Although these is a common mood in all the songs of most albums, I think mood alone is not enough to qualify it as a concept album. For example, Joni might use similar tunings in one album, hence creating the same mood throughout, but that's not enough. I'm not really sure what qualities are needed to define a concept album? However, some examples of concept albums that come to mind might be: DED, Mingus, Hejira, Neil Young's Tonight's the Night or On the Beach, Hendrix: Axis Bold As Love, etc. One possible definition might be that the "message" derives from the entire album, not just from a couple of songs. In other words the whole thing is greater than the sum of its parts. Yeah, sometimes I get that feeling that the album is terrific although no particular song is truly outstanding (eg: Plainsong: In Search of Amelia Earhardt). What makes YOU define an album as a concept? What albums strike YOU as being representative of Concept Albums? In this respect, I feel DED was an angry album, as was pointed out; but it was also a bold move (wild, untamed, or to sum it up: genuine). Now I don't mean anything negative by that, just that I don't see it as "wild","untamed" or "genuine". Joni "untamed and genuine" is Blue or STAS or Turbulent Indigo. Joni "wild" is DJRD and HOSL to a lesser extent. It isn't even totally angry...after all, look at it's opening and closing: "Good Friends" & "Lucky Girl"...not a lot of anger there. The only "concept" I see in DED is Dolby & Klein trying to fit the perpetual musical square peg that has always been Joni Mitchell into the musical mish-mash that was 1985. Miles away from genuine. I know i havn't been very prolific on the posting to JMDL front of late, life is hectic. Here's a little run donw: Yesterday, monday, i turned 21:-) Mine is one of those families that make a big deal of this date. On saturday we had a big party; big hall, dj, food, lots of guests, late bar:-) It was fun. They say that it's very hard to enjoy your own party. While i wouldn't say this, i will admit that the alcohol didn't take effect quick enough for me! Afterwards i headed out on the town with some friends. I met a girl that i was friends with at 16 and 17; we've not seen each other twice in teh last year. She bought me a lot more drink. I don't do shots, but the shots she got me (tia maria and baileys, called a B52 i think) were great, very smooth. A small group of us topped the night off at my house. Yesterday, teh day of my birthday, my mothers graduation ceremony from a course hse had been taking was held. The minister of education was there. I got quite a buzz out of hearing him congratulating me for being in university, and to then have my sister in his ear wondering why, for God's sake, is she not entitled to a mature student grant. hehe, he didn't quite know! He was a very nice, chatty, and funny man. Colin, i hope you too enjoyed your birthday:-) Thanks for the birthday wishes. Finished and sent off my column that I write each week for the home, to the newspaper office. Tonight is our employee party. I am skipping it. Can't face those people tonight. Much rather be with my joni friends. Believe me, you would to. On the drive home I was gazing at the stereo and noticed the treble and bass controls. Have always preferred the treble turned up all the way and the bass slightly below the middle point. There, in my car, I wondered what my joni friends preferred and thought about our posts about these kind of things. Really enjoy them and it is so nice to come home and be able to emote to you all. So, what is it? Treble, bass? Up, down? To most of you, the musicians, this probably seems rather silly but I have no music sense. I like the treble up so I can hear the vocal very distinctly.
