Together they face their regrets and count their blessings in this humorous look at commitment. Three New York City couples befriend one another, despite class and age differences, at a small private school where one is employed and the rest send their children. The plot centers around the couples' attempts to stage a pageant on 1960's themes for the school, which eventually causes each couple to argue and reassess marriage" And what 60's theme was staged? The Circle Game! A 10 minutes long lovely scene in the end of the movie where the childern sing it and dance to it and act the lyrics - so the whole song becomes an amazing and colourful show. That makes the movie realy worth renting. Did anyone else see the movie or this beatiful Circle Game scene in the end? Love to know. The tunes are also far more engaging than those on 'Night Ride Home', for example. In fact, I'm gonna risk a lynching by suggesting that for me, there's a toss up between NRH and TTT for Joni's worst album. NRH is pretty much (dare I say this) a middle aged album - she sounds half asleep on most of it, the rhythms are plodding, melodies unadventurous and the chord sequences cliched. Don't get me wrong, I like Come in From the Cold, Slouching Towards Bethlehem and I LOVE Two Grey Rooms, but the rest are either dull or embarassing (stand up Ray's Dad's Cadillac). Similar situation with TTT, although at least when I heard the first two tunes I thought it was gonna be a really good album. Why did Joni just settle back into those boring VG-8 guitar numbers when she had some great production going on on Harlem in Havana and Man from Mars? And theyre all in the same key! I mean, compare TTT with the musical energy and innovation of CAS - thats music that takes your breath away (when the strings kick in on Same Situation - wowser!). Same story with DJRD - exhilarating! Where did that spirit go on TTT? Especially after the brooding, dark and intelligent works on Turbulent Indigo showed that Joni was still a master (and a half). Now thankfully she's pioneering again - Coyote by an orchestra - now who can say what THAT's gonna sound like! Just my two cents worth. I'm off down the bunker in anticipation of an angry NRH loving mob! Now, if you haven't heard "Hunter", it's worth having, but that same studio versio is available on "The Hissing Demos" which is certainly an essential. The other songs are the same releases that would appear on the official Blue. The story is that Reprise wanted to pressure Joni to release her next record as she was on a roll, so they sent her tapes to the record plants. This forced Joni's hand to complete the project so it would be as she wanted it. I saw it in the Asian Music TV network of Star World. A lovely girl from China was hosting the show where she was walking backstage and talking to the winners of that evening. She found Joni and the 2 girls had a little chat. One of the questions was "How do you write your songs?" - which made all of us here watching it go "OHHHHHHH, THAT GIRL DOESN'T KNOW WHAT SHE'S GETTING HERSLEF INTO"...:) Joni didn't mind the question at all. She said her compositions raise from her inner mantras and that all of her songs are her mantras. But then she said, and i rememebr it very clearly "It took me seven years to write the lyrics to one of my songs" and she smiled from ear to ear and eye to eye. That was, more or less, the end of the interview. I've been wondering ever since then about the 7 years song. Joni made it clear that it was the lyrics of the song that took 7 years to write which makes it even more magical. I have no idea, i'm afraid. What you think, everyone? What is Joni's 7 years song? But a big difference to me is that while Jaco absolutely revolutionized electric bass playing (as you said, played in a way totally unlike anyone before and managed to make his instrument sound totally unique, not to mention spawning thousands of imitators, clones, and devotees of his style), I don't really feel that the same is true of Brian Blade, as great a drummer and musician as he surely is. The position Jaco held in music, and his effect on musicians, is something very few players have had in the history of jazz (Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Jimi Hendrix, Pat Metheny, Miles Davis are some well known examples). One can tell it's Jaco (or at least one of his imitators) in two or three notes; I don't think the same could be said of Blade. - -Fred ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Dec 2001 16:52:58 From: "Timothy Spong" Subject: Welcomes; Guantanamera; JC & JM (VLJC) Dear list members, I. March 31 in 1985, in Wavre, Belgium. Nun, singer, administrator, and songwriter. Deckers gained international fame in 1963 with her hit recording "Dominique." She was a novice in the Dominican convent of Fichermont in Belgium when she was asked to record her song, which became a number-one hit on the U.S. pop music charts, sold millions of copies world-wide, and earned Decker a 1963 National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Award for best gospel or other religious recording. Following the success of "Dominique," Deckers--noted for her high, pure voice--recorded several other songs using such names as The Singing Nun, Soeur Sourire, and Sister Smile. She left the convent in 1966 to pursue her singing career and to "be closer to the people." Her success, however, did not continue, and she began giving private lessons in painting and guitar. Deckers later operated an institute for autistic children, but this project met with financial difficulties. Depressed, in part by the fate of her children's home, she committed suicide with a friend by taking an overdose of sedatives. The way I see it is the words (can) have a three way impact. Firstly giving the listener a purely visual image of say 'A black crow flying in a blue sky'. Secondly the metaphorical meaning, in this case Joni likens her life to that of a scavenger by using the similes of crow (shadow/corruption?) in a blue sky (light/illumination?.) All this is done in the writing. Thirdly the intonation of the words i.e. the way Joni rises on the word 'crow' to denote flying away. Then the drawn out 'blueeeeeeee skyyyyyyyyyy' to denote gliding maybe. This is done in the singing, although this may have been thought out in the writing. Therefore if somebody covers the song, it would not matter if they had the most wonderful voice, if they sing a short sharp 'blue sky' you lose the effect and hence an important part of the song. That's why it's so important for people to sing their own songs. Imagine someone else singing 'I bore her, but I could not raise her' on Chinese Cafe. It's so personal it just doesn't work for anyone else. Sorry if this a clumsy explanation but I hope you an see what I mean. ~Kevin ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2001 #591 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
