My name is Rachael..i am 23 and live in Seattle, WA. I am a singer with a music business degree and work in radio and record promotions. I have had joni music around the house all my life... but didn't really click with her up until 2 weeks ago when i decided to sit down and really study some of the female songwriters in popular music (I have a small obsession with women in music). She is by far the best i have found. I am madly in love with the "court & Spark" and "blue" albums. I am hoping to get a cmplete discography by the end of the holidays so i can really experience all the sides of joni. I think i actually picked the best way to start, by purchasing "the complete poems & lyrics" book so i could let the stories speak for themselves. It has been kind of exciting to see how much the music enhances each story. Anyhow..i am a newbie to the entire joni scene as some found out this morning...so i am probably gonna be asking a bunch of questions. If any of you have any thoughts or good resource ideas where i can really dive in...let me know. BTW...does anyone knoew where you can by any posters/prints of her art work or of her? I'm sure any ethnic group or religious community which has survived persecution, pogroms or diaspora will understand the feeling. I am also not the only Welsh member on this list and maybe others will express their ideas on it. I would like to hear Wally's songs on the matter too. I'm very busy today but I'll be in touch on this soon. But here's a poem about Welsh history to put us in the mood mike in bcn Welsh History We were a people taut for war; the hills Were no harder, the thin grass Clothed them more warmly than the coarse Shirts our small bones. We fought, and were always in retreat, Like snow thawing on the slopes Of Mynydd Mawr; and yet the stranger Never found our ultimate stand In the thick woods, declaiming verse To the sharp prompting of the harp. Our kings died, or they were slain By the old treachery at the ford. Our bards perished, driven from the halls Of nobles by the thorn and bramble. We were a people bred on legends, Warming our hands at the red past. The great were ashamed of our loose rags Clinging stubbornly to the proud tree Of blood and birth, our lean bodies And mud houses were a proof Of our ineptitude for life. We were a people wasting ourselves In fruitless battles for our masters, In lands to which we had no claim, With men for whom we felt no hatred. We were a people, and are so yet. When we have finished quarrelling for crumbs Under the table, or gnawing the bones Of a dead culture, we will arise, And greet each other in a new dawn. (*Armed, but not in the old way.) R.S. On this wonderful double CD's, Croz pays tribute to Joni as being one of the most important composers of the 20th century. He then proceeds to cover "For Free". After finishing the CPR CD, I switched on TV and watched a rerun of Ally Mc Beal. Sure enough, Ally sees herself as a little girl in this one and the music is: Joni. There was already the episode where Robert Downey Jr played "River" on piano. Joni is credited on Friends too. What other cool TV series with Joni have I missed? An AMAZING amount of information can be found there. Further, a new biography by Karen O'Brien has just been issued this year, and while I haven't partaken of it myself as yet, I've only heard good things about it. <> E-Bay trades lots of Joni Mitchell stuff...posters are pretty common, but prints of her artwork are harder to come by. It resulted in a recurring nightmare with the pony man eating ME, and whispering "Bah, Bah..." in my ear. After not thinking about this for years, I heard it wafting up the hill to my house from an outdoor show at a public pool a few years ago, and I got that same cold chill and irrational terror. I don't know it's name, i missed the begining you see, but Sybil Shepard was the star and the story was about 3 couples trying to solve their love pains. Then, at the last 10 minutes, i thought i was dreaming. I'm talking a MAJOR Joni tribute here. The last scene was when the couples find out that they still love eachother and that they'll always stick together so they all go to a party (Xmas party?) at a school where one couple's son is learining and the child and his class perform The Circle Game on stage. I thought it'll take a minute and that the scene will be fading out into the credits but to my surprise and thrill it was the whole song, EVERYTHING, and it was called "The Circle Game Show", abd what a show it was - The children were singing it and dancing and they were all wearing colourful clothes with feathers and angle-like wings and crowns and there was a staging and golden stars and beautiful lighting and it was sooooo lovely, Gosh, so very lovely. The camera was focusing on them and the grwonups, their parents, were in the crowd, holding hands and crying. This was the first time i've ever seen a Joni song in an film that wasn't a part of a soundtrack but a complete scene. I'll do my best to get some more information on this one, no doubt some of us already know. Awesome! I like her live album, _Experience 828_, even better. It was just released w/ a second disc of mostly so-so studio stuff, but some great hidden tracks. 12 minute rework of "Love Rain" and an awesome "Long Walk" (probably my fave song of hers). Another great new R&B record is the latest Maxwell, _Now_. He's finally learning to mold his great grooves into actual songs, and there are some interesting lyrics here and there ("I could do better / but there's no one quite like you"!). Prince's influence shows up all over the place. And what better place to push my fave yet again--Me'Shell NdegeOcello. Three albums, all of them stellar. The most recent _Bitter_ is a mostly acoustic/rock-oriented affair produced by Craig Street (Cassandra Wilson) with plainspoken and searing lyrics about infidelity, breakups and, ultimately, hope. Also includes an awesome duet with Joe Henry. I wrote a review of this album a while back that I might resend just for fun if I can find it. I saw Me'Shell in concert this past Saturday, previewing material from her upcoming March album. The new stuff sounds something like a stew of the first three with a strong dash of Parliament thrown in. She's using the speak-song vocal style of the first album (and its fiercely political lyrics) a lot, over rock-ish arrangements but with the beat funked up a bit and some '70s style soul jamming a la _Peace Beyond Passion_. Should be another winner! Her sense of humor is also coming back to record; my current signature comes from a character sketch/song she played this weekend. - --Michael NP: Common, "The Light" ===== ____________________________________________________ "Grab your ass and your purse." - --Me'Shell NdegeOcello, forthcoming Check out Yahoo! I always like when someone young is discovering her music,so neat!! An older sister way back before you were born, 1975, turned me on to Joni's music when she took me to a concert during the "Court & Spark" tour. I was nineteen and have been a fan since. Now mind you, I knew nothing of her or her music when I attended this concert. She opened with "Help Me".......DAMN!!! IT WAS GOOD!! (BTW, Is there anyone in the Cincinnati area that was at this concert? It was at the University OF Cincinnati Fieldhouse.) There has NEVER < NEVER been an artist before or since that has reached my very core like Joni has! What a weird coincidence ! I just heard this song on the radio a few days ago - "Dominique". They even talked about the song a bit and gave some history. I think it was just one nun, but of course her name escapes me, and the song apparently was a tribute to the founder of the nun's order, but I can't remember which order it is. Seems like it was French Canadian, but I could be wrong about that. The really strange part is that a few years later the woman killed herself. If I heard correctly, it was a double suicide - the nun and her female lover. How very very sad. I can only imagine how conflicted that woman was. Of course. most of our > troubles in the world stem from people thinking they know the TRUTH when all they > have is an idea. > That's an insightful point Colin about the root of all evil. Nevertheless, I don't think DED is about Joni's idea of truth: If you read the lyrics of "Fiction" you will see that she depicts everything as fiction (which I think it is) but she never mentions anywhere that she holds the Truth. All she's saying is "I can't decide/ thruth/fiction." As far as other themes on the album, it seems to me Joni is just doing straight talk about REALITY. I should have said REALITY instead of TRUTH because that may hopefully be a less controversial concept?
