I'm so delighted to hear this great news, Colin. From what you say, I would guess that the drug which has made such a difference to you is carbamazepine or "Tegretol" which is an old drug with interesting new indications. The good thing about that is that it's been around a long time and it's side effects and long term effects are very well known about as it's been widely taken all over the world - no rare toxicity is likely to suddenly become apparent as sometimes happens with new drugs. I'm also pleased to hear your story because I think western conventional medicine comes in for such a slating these days that it's good to hear of a success. A lot of people are too quick to dismiss it and turn to an alternative without giving conventional treatment a proper chance. Of course, a lot depends on finding a good practioner but, on the whole, it's the best researched and monitored system available. I really hope the treatment continues to work well for you. It's about the muse. I hope I haven't told this story before: My new friend Anna asked Michael Timmins, the songwriter/guitarist/arranger of the Cowboy Junkies why they weren't on David Geffen's label anymore. (Mike talks to fans after the shows sometimes. As far as I know, his sister, Margo, ALWAYS does.) Mike said, (paraphrasing) that being on Geffen was a huge pain in the ass. The label was running everything, shoving them around like marionettes. Geffen decided the artwork, and release schedule without consulting the band for example. Finally, Margo told Mike that she wanted to be off the label. He said that they have never looked back, even though being on your own means MORE work, it's okay, because working for yourself, it doesn't seem like an intrusion to make a decison at 11 PM in a hotel room. I love that story because, although Mike writes all of the songs and arrangements, what was unimpeachably important to him was his sister's sanity. There's a balance to be struck and although I'm on the opposite end of the balance, (trying to double my income to get out of an inner city apartment), I'm glad that the music biz is sufficiently flush that my miniature heros (the Cowboy Junkies) can throttle back and smell the roses. Lama Kate said, >>I think this is very true. Marian's post reminds me that truly this is the highest essence of the arts. It is about self-expression. I have been oh so guilty of saying I don't get why so & so is popular, but I think when this is the case it is because they are getting huge commercial success when others are not. However, commercial success has a lot to do with what kind of marketing dollars are behind the artist. When it comes to the music marketplace, its not always about art. Its about making $. Still, I like your reminder, Marian that criticizing can also be avoiding one's own creativity... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Dec 2001 01:14:49 +0000 From: colin Subject: Re: no one is really sure njc > That would be Dixie Carter, yes that is her. wonderful accent and voice. is it real? > best known as Julia Sugarbaker from Designing > Women. A lot of people are too quick to dismiss it and turn to an > alternative without giving conventional treatment a proper chance. i get your point but i did give it a chance years ago when i didn't know any better. i was given drugs that made me very ill, that caused hallucinations, arythmia, tarkive dis- whatsit, panic attacks, addictions and all of them were inappropraite drugs for me too! no one really bothered to look for my symptoms properly. elizabeth made it her job (which it is being a dr!) to look at me carefully over the last 2 1/2 years. She notice not just the mood changes but the other nuerological stuff. she was good abiut it too. never siad anything to me about that but only ever mentioned the moods. when i agreed to go on tegratol she left it to me to report to her. when i explained how i suddenly was without all those other things, she said she wasn;t surprised and in fact as i was speaking, she premeted m a lot-knowing what i was going to say. Obviously, it is far too soon to tell about the effects it may have on my moods but i am still just so shocked about the other stuff and relieved that they ahve gone and it wasn't me after all! I had not even bothered to relate them as symptoms because i didn;t know they were! I just thought this was normal for me. John and my firends are excellent in that they accepted it too, tho they of course knew it wasn't normal but loved me too much to say so because they too didn't think it could be changed. none of us knew my brain was wonky. i wonder if this is due to all the times I got knocked on the head and knocked out? You know, when i came to the end of the therapy, or rather the end of the grief and delat with the abuse issues, i felt empy, like who was i? I have had almost 4years to find that out and assumed this last almost 4 eyars was who i was. now it seems i have yet to discover that. I wonder what sort of person i really am. It is tempting to get all resentful about it all but one cannot undo the past. besides i am so lucky. I am loved and not just by God. It is lucky my firends and john love me regardless of who i am! must be difficult to have someone so close keep changing so radically! i don't veen know if I am introvert or ectrovert, whether i am a home body or a party animal, tho i do like my own comapny. mind you, it easier to be by myself cos i dont' have to pretend or hide anything. so maybe now all the wierd stuff is going or gone, i won't want to spend so much time indoors. and maybe I'll get to those blasted dog shows, which i avoid doing. too many people, too much stress related to what if i have a turn in the ring? what if i forget my dog? or where i am or who i am tlaking or what i am saying? maybe soon i can face that. The last time i showed the judge, who gave Mitchell a first, said she had neevr seen anyone shake so mucchwhen showing and how this would affect my dog. i ahdn't even been aware iwas shaking. anyway, ia m rambling. this is exciting and a bit scary if i a m truthful. sems i have yet to discover colin after all. hope i like him when i do. > Of > course, a lot depends on finding a good practioner but, on the whole, it's > the best researched and monitored system available. > I really hope the treatment continues to work well for you. > Keep taking the tablets! > > Jacky - -- bw colin DAK,BRO GC, 950i, 940,860,864,890, 260,Silver 830,860, 580 and 270, Passap 6000, Duo80. colin@tantra-apso.com http://www.tantra-apso.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Dec 2001 01:39:20 -0000 From: "William Waddell" Subject: Bob v. Buffington" Dear Group: It is nice to be back. After much traveling, a bout with the flu, three trials and a ton of legal work, and moving past the date of my Sheila's death, I am looking at my e-mails once again. :) I am looking forward to the next Fest. :) Thank you all (and you know who you are) for your loving e-missives, phone calls...and the playing of your guitars and piano's over the phone. :) It was and is much appreciated. After reading Mike's post I have to say I personally believe Bach is another example of those composers who will never fade. I enjoy music which corresponds to the mood I am in at the moment. Just now I am completely absorbed (besides legal matters) in preparing for two musical events which will occur here at my home. I will be playing piano on two pieces and accordion on three. So I am playing lots of Liz Story "The Gift" because I am playing "The Bleak Midwinter" from that CD ....by the way she also has a songbook so I can actually see the notes. It is a challenge for me because I am such a novice...it has 5 flats on the treble and 5 on the base clef. And I am a putz on the piano. Needless to say I will not be playing with two other friends...both of whom are concert pianists. They will play AFTER I play. LOL Then there is the accordion...so Flaco Jimenez and the Texas Tornados (hey Wild Woman Binkley... LOL) provide me with some jumping music. On the accordion we are playing "Under Paris Skies", "May I Have This Dance", White Christmas" (which even this Jewish girl knows) and if I learn it..."Spanish Eyes" Flaco style. I am playing these pieces with friends on the 15th and the 22. I wanted to mention another wonderful jazz pianist. Her name is Mary Louise Knutson and she has her first CD out. My friend Phyllis, who is a wonderful pianist whom I will be playing with, studied with Knutson for a bit. I went with a friend to hear Knutson last Friday night and she is a treat. Well, I am going to enjoy a nice evening home alone this night...it will feel wonderful to sit back with my music...enjoy a wood fire, have a glass of wine and relax. Thank you all once again for your kindness and patience. :) Love and Peace.......the bee charmer ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2001 19:31:49 -0800 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: childhood memories NJC Product-of-Disney-childhood: When You Wish Upon a Star Someday My Prince Will Come (ha ;-) Others: Over The Rainbow How Much Is That Doggie in The Window? Write to George Wurzbach Songwriters Guild of America Room 1306 165 W 46th Street, NY NY 10036 and ask for membership info. ************* Now for my own cheerless outlook: Seeking out a publisher at this time would be, imo, premature. The reason is that you can offer them only the songs, no guaranteed way of making money. If you could walk into a publisher's office and say "I've just signed a deal to write six songs for the new Bette Midler movie," then they could see the mechanism whereby the money would be generated for them. It's the same business philosophy that makes a label reluctant to sign a new act until the act has proven that it has a following who will spend bucks. The music business is cruel; it reminds me of the Biblical parable of the talents, where the third servant says to the returning lord, "Master, I know you are a hard man; that you reap where you have not sown." To reap where they have not sown is what almost every suit in the music business devotes his/her career to. I am knocking on doors right now myself as an artist as well as a songwriter. Unless someone disagrees, I highly recommend a website called, "HitQuarters.Com." They are based in Sweden, but their aim is to help artists and songwriters make the appropriate connections to people within the music industry. Their premise is that it is not impossible to succeed in the music industry without knowing people, but that it is necessary to make the right contacts. That is where they come into play. Every month, you are allowed to submit three songs to HitQuarters. There is a $10 annual fee, but it is well worth it. They pick the best songs submitted each month and forward them to A& R representatives who then contact you. They also have a wealth of information that is essential for anyone considering music as a vocation. They have been very diligent to answer any of my personal questions quickly and completely. They have listings of the most successful labels, A&R, and publishing companies, if I am not mistaken. I am learning though, that there is a difference between "reputable" and "successful." That is plan A. Plan B is if you wish to remain independent as Kate Bennett does. Kate has a freedom with her career that in my opinion, is probably the best path. She was kind enough to point me to Indie (Independent) sites. Kate has taught me that money is not everything and that freedom to play your music the way you want to is most important. I'm thinking that the first decision you will want to make is "how" you want to be involved in this industry. I'm still trying to figure it out! Love, Sherelle-trying to share what little she knows.
