At a first time it was programmed that Joni would be there (every session had a "singer", e. g., Bob Dylan was there), but at last Joni was substituted by Rickie Lee Jones. It was very frustrating to me because I live in Spain (I was born there) and was decided to travel from Madrid to Seville only to see her. Greetings, Fernando F. Kate's advice about creating an illegal address sounds like a fine idea, as far as preventing spread of an email worm to others, once you become infected. This would not however prevent mayhem onyour own computer. This GONER worm tries to delete a long list of important system files, probably disabling your computer. Another virus, last year, deleted all JPG files. So, better yet : prevent infection! (Not a plug! ) An effective virus protection program such as Mcafee or Norton will run you $30 (plus reupping for DAT file renewals every couple of years. Once you have a legal copy of one of these programs, you can set up a regular update schedule to protect yourself as new viruses appear. At the Museum we update our mail server's protection every day, and sometimes that's even insufficient. Short of that, don't open attachments that you weren't expecting, even from known correspondents. ESPECIALLY do not open attachments with the file extensions .EXE, .VBS, .SCR and .AF. which are incredibly likely to be worms and viruses. All I can remember about that night was feeling okay about how the Overture part came out, but being mortified by what I did to the rest of the song. I hadn't really practiced the song part at all, just the Overture, and the song part came out really badly - it was poor rhythmically and I didn't sing it very well either. About a year or so ago, I was out driving and our former good station here had an incredible interview with her. This lady has had the most amazing life and is a marvelous storyteller. Back in the 70s I was a finalist in the American Song Festival lyric competition. One of the judges personally contacted me to ask if I had music to go with it and if I would submit a demo to his artist management company. While I was thrilled I was also a little taken aback by his name - Piggy Smith. But I corresponded with him and sent him a demo which he shopped around but was unable to "sell." He was very nice, however, and asked me to keep in touch with him. I later learned he was Keely's brother, the former head of A&R at Capital Records and somewhat of a legend! I've always found writing melodies to be the hard part and the lyric writing to be the easier of the two. One of the most common stumbling blocks is to think that you have to come up with "big" subjects. I used to think "my life is so boring, I have nothing to write about." But that wasn't true. Plus, the songs don't have to be strictly personal. Joni is a master at creating self-contained stories that have a beginning, a middle, and an end. She works a theme throughout the song. A good example is the song "Blue." The idea of the song can be simply stated as - "I love you but I can't deal with your addictions." That's not a great lyric. So instead, she's chooses a nautical theme and works it throughout the song. Blue, songs are like tattoos (effective image, plus sailors would often get a tatoo during shore leave) You know I've been to sea before (this is line that puts us squarely in the nautical domain) Crown and anchor me (more nautical...) Or let me sail away (and more) Blue, here is a song for you Ink on a pin (talk about a poetic way of describing injecting drugs - for me it also conjures "ink on a pen" which refers to writing the song, and also the way a sailor might have written to a loved one while at sea in times past) Underneath the skin (finishes the image and a good rhyme to boot) An empty space to fill in (the reason for taking the drugs and for writing the song) Well there's so many sinking now (this ties the nautical to drugs) You've got to keep thinking You can make it through these waves (more nautical...) and so forth - you get the idea. Anyway, so I'm going to be at Northeast JoniFest 2002 and I've indicated in the form that I'd like to conduct a workshop on lyric writing. This is really preliminary (obviously, nothing will be decided about what workshops will happen, who will conduct them, etc... for a while.) I'd love to hear other JMDLers' song ideas, especially works in progress. lots of love Anne ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Dec 2001 10:53:21 -0600 From: Steve Polifka Subject: Jonifest 2001 Performance Cd's NJC Michael Paz wrote: >How the feck did I miss the artwork for the CD's. She said that PJ's strength is not in her studio recordings but rather in concert. She had a couple of boots, but I remained unimpressed. However, that Stories From the Sea thingy, that rocks. So that's another thing. I have realized if I get too involved in the horrors I loose my balance & hope for a better world or my awareness of all that is right in the world. There is so much good here & I know that for me it is so important for me to know, be & share love, peace, joy...all of those things...So I have to chose which battles to fight & which ones to put energy into or give funds to. Yet anything I do is such a tiny blip on the big world screen. Which in itself can be daunting...yet, I am reminded of the 100th monkey syndrome. Its about how when there are enough people with an awareness of a certain issue then all of a sudden there is a quantum leap of awareness among humanity. Someone (don't remember who) came up with this theory based on their observations of monkeys on an island. Does anyone have this book? Another time it came upon my when I was playing in the round (solo) with two other songwriters (one was Caroline Aiken)... maybe it was the level of talent in the room that night that pulled me into the zone (I had only moments earlier almost fallen off my stool, onto the guitar, & off the stage, when I got my stoooopid clog heal caught in the rung...it would have been really embarrassing & probably quite painful...something caught me cuz I should have fallen...anyway the rest of my set was similarly visited with divine intervention...a very rare otherworldly gift). I love that music is mediative for you Marian! I have always felt the same way about writing & playing. I have especially been reinspired by George Harrison's music being very powerful in this way. A lot of Joni's songs are that way for me too. Crying- I spent a lot of time in some reeeeeeeally intense music workshops that focused on the emotional side of the songwriting process. I can't tell you how many people broke into tears when first delivering their songs to other people. I believe this is a very common thing when you are first exposing your words (especially) to others. That was the beauty of the workshops...that people could do this in a safe & supportive setting (much like a jmdl get together). For me, crying in front of others is worse than public speaking or death so my insecurities came out in shaking hands, legs, voice....but it truly gets better as you get comfortable playing your songs for others. I still revert back to this kind of fright when I am playing a new song for the first time to other people. It is like it is being birthed for the first time & it is soooooo intense for me! There is no practiced professionalism that might happen with other songs that I am used to playing...each new song takes me back to that 100% vulnerable place again. Its maddening (but good I think)! I just cannot wait to hear you play Marian!!!!!!!!!!!! I have always loved hearing Paz play Joni songs...Paz you nail every little detail & it is amazing to hear how you are able to do that. Her stuff is NOT easy to do straight up imho, it is easier to interpret your own way. She has her own inner rhythm that is really hard to nail down. ******************************************** Kate Bennett www.katebennett.com sponsored by Polysonics Discover the Indies at Taylor Guitars: http://www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/bennett.html ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Dec 2001 13:52:44 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: PJ..PU! njc/now sjc Many thanks to y'all for the PJ tips...I'll put that CD on my "want" list! Finally, the video tapes from Jonifest 2001 are edited and ready to be ordered!! First, I want to remind everyone that the sales from these tapes are the ONLY way Rich is getting paid for his time. He has put over 40 hours into this project between shooting Friday and Saturday, and hours upon hours of editing, and hasn't received a penny for his time yet. So, I am hoping and expecting that we sell quite a few sets to pay him for his time. He has already agreed to be at Jonifest 2001 to videotape, but I feel strongly that we as a group need to be able to make it worth his while. Also, because of the above, I really expect people to NOT duplicate the videos for each other, but order them directly. Thanks! I will be sending these videotapes out to be duplicated professionally, so if you would like tapes, please get your orders and money in to me right away! The deadline for all orders and payment is January 3, 2002. Go here to see what is on each tape and order form with prices: http://www.jmdl.com/jonifest/2001tapes.cfm The 2-hour edited version is AWESOME!! Wait until you see how Rich transitioned from Friday night to Saturday. Every lister will want one of these, especially if they weren't there. The Salvation Army refuses to hire gay people. I suppose this explains why their uniforms are so bad. PFLAG* LAUNCHES BOYCOTT OF SALVATION ARMY *Parents and Friends of Lesbians And Gays You gotta hand it to PFLAG - when they're right, they're right. The organization everyone loves to love has just launched a boycott of the virulently anti-gay Salvation Army. As many of you know, the Salvation Army is actually an evangelical Christian organization and really really really doesn't like gay people. They even explicitly refuse to hire gay people, and a few months ago worked out a behind- the-scenes deal with the Bush Administration to codify that anti-gay hiring ban in the proposed faith-based-initiative. (For more info on that, read my story written at the time: http://uspolitics.about.com/library/weekly/aa071001a.htm ) Well, the latest bigoted shoe to drop from the Salvation Army happened a few weeks ago. You see, a number of western state Salvation Armies decided that they in fact like gay people, and wanted to give their gay staff domestic partner benefits (though not clear what gay staff they have, since the national office bans gay hires). Well, America's Taliban got its turban in a tizzy and launched a barrage of protests calls, emails and letters to the Salvation Army headquarters. And what do you think the hq did? They caved, and over-ruled the local Salvation Armies. So now, the Salvation Army nationwide will have domestic partner benefits, but it will exclude gay and lesbian employees from those benefits. And these people think we're going to give them money? Well, that's where PFLAG-the-avenger comes in. PFLAG has launched a campaign to boycott the Salvation Army by dropping little notes in their buckets letting them know that they would have gotten 5 bucks, instead of a nasty note, if they weren't such morons. Please visit the PFLAG Web site, where you can download the notes, and get more information on this campaign. And please tell your friends about this site (links provided below), and about the Salvation Army's bigoted position on gays and lesbians. Most people aren't familiar with how "radical right" and intolerant an organization the Salvation Army really is. Which is really too bad. I always grew up thinking they were the good guys... Finally, don't forget - while you shouldn't give a DIME to the Salvation Army, make sure you do give to another organization. No reason the poor should suffer simply because the Salvation Army wanted to take a slap at minorities at Christmas-time.
