In fact, all of Paris subway has huge advertising placards about Ryan which say he's a cross between Neil and Dylan (or is it Van?). Just like most people in this list, I checked Ryan out of curiosity and instantly liked him, especially the 1st album. This sharing of experiences is what JMDL is about. Keep it up. I didn't care too much for the later stuff, except The Shouting Stage. Saw her once back then and she was incredible. Never had another opportunity to see her and thus I WOULD LOVE TO TRADE MUSIC FOR LIVE JOAN SHOWS of the pre-82 era (list upon request). By the same token, just saw Bonnie Raitt on Jools Holland show. Jools showed some 1973-74 footage in between songs and this just reminded me of how gifted Bonnie was, especially during her long desert cross before she became a hit. I saw her about 4 times in small clubs between 78 and 84 and she was rockin', free of the constraints that come with being popular. Compared with later performances I attended, the ones when she was unknown were definitely outstanding. Cheers for Bonnie who put more heart into pleasing 50 people than 5000. Well it's well known that hardships breed the genius and talent in all people, isn't it? They sound incredible on any cd player. They *really* sound incredible if your cd player has the HDCD chip, which reads the extra bandwidth encoded on HDCDs but unread by normal cd players. (Joni was my reason for buying one.) The irony of this is that since she went back to Reprise in 1994, which was before HDCD was available to the record companies for general use, the one non-Geffen album of hers that is not mastered with HDCD is Turbulent Indigo. You can tell the difference in a couple of ways. First, there should be a sticker on the front that says HDCD. Second, the spines are different looking than the old cds--- the old cds had larger print on the spine, and the Asylum ones (those from For The Roses through Shadows and Light) had a standard font. On the new cds, the spines usually have lettering that is in keeping with the design of the album cover-- for example, Ladies appears handwritten, and on some of them the two spines will have different colours because they are on opposite ends of the cover painting, and the colours of the spine come from the colours on that edge of the cover. (Clouds does this rather noticeably.) The third way to tell the difference is that all the new HDCDs have some text on the back cover towards the bottom that mentions Joe Gastwirt's name. To answer your other question, please see www.hdcd.com. It's a processing and mastering technology that actually creates real 20-bit sound on a cd that can be played either on a normal 16-bit player, or on an HDCD player, which converts the extra info on the disc, giving true 20-bit sound. They're quite lifelike. On the newer albums, such as TTT and BSN, joni's voice sounds like she's in the room with you. On Thu, 29 Nov 2001, [iso-8859-1] David Shannon wrote: > Sorry. I suspect the best way this could happen is if it was licensed out to someone like Collector's Choice or Rhino, because they do niche marketing through their catalogs and websites, and are able to turn a profit on small-batch releases, where the bigger record companies can't do the marketing to justify the release and have much higher overhead to make it profitable. It's amazing the arcane and obscure stuff on these two labels, stuff that have very tiny markets, will only sell in the thousands, but these guys can put them out, In the case of Collector's Choice, there are many titles that you will never see in stores but can only get through their catalog or website. It seems to me a strategy for getting *some* sales out of an album that otherwise isn't selling at all. The diehards already have DED, but will buy a rerelease with extra goodies. Given the minimal costs involved in such a venture (no new recording/production costs, merely the actual manufacture of new discs and probably some minimal marketing), it would almost surely bring in a small profit, which would be more than the disc is bringing in now. The difference between the HDCD and the older standard issue is not really that much, at least on a regular CD player, depending on the title. The highs are a little truer, but I had to test FTR back and forth several times to hear any difference, using good headphones. Maybe some of the other titles show more improvement. The best CD's are the audiophile issues of Blue (still available for $25) and WTRF (out of print). The worst is probably the original issue of C&S. The HDCD issue of STAS is a big improvement, too. Look for the HDCD logo on the rear of the CD. Also note that in Europe some people discovered the regular issue CD packaged in the HDCD cover. The real HDCD will have the HDCD logo on the disc itself. If it doesn't, take it back!
