He is only in his 20's so most of the stuff he was turning on to was pretty far out there (at least for this old codger). However, he also listed some pretty class acts as among his favorites (Tom Waits, Peter Gabriel to name a few), so I decided to bring up Joni. He told me he had two of her cd's - Hejira and Mingus. He is a bass player in his spare time, and a huge Jaco fan, which is what led him to Hejira and Mingus. He considers Hejira the greatest road record ever made (got to agree with him there!), but he was kind of luke warm on Mingus so he never persued Joni any further. On our last day working together, I dug through my cd collection and discovered I had extra copies of Shadows and Light and Blue, so I gave them to him as a parting gift. I told him he might like S&L because of Jaco playing on it, and as far as Blue goes, every self-respecting music lover should have a copy of it in their collection. To my surprise, he wasn't too thrilled with S&L, but to my delight, he was blown away by Blue, calling it absolutely brilliant. So obviously when I read your story about hearing Blue coming through the walls of this apartment in Amsterdam at 2 in the morning, I immediately thought of my friend. Who knows, maybe it was him. If not, it's great to know that there several others out in Amsterdam who appreciate this great album. By the way, my friend's name is Jacco... just in case. Jack P.S. - Of all the music Jacco turned me on to, I would say Badly Drawn Boy is my favorite. It takes a couple of listens, but once it hits you, it will be all you want to listen to for a while. I think of it a sort of a hybrid between John Lennon and Beck - or a more experimental World Party. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 10:30:34 -0800 From: Lindsay Moon Subject: Outlook NJC Assuming some of you have Microsoft Outlook for an email program, I have a really stupid question: The other day, I was in the midst of a lengthy email and knowing that I wouldn't finish it, I clicked on the Save icon. I was infected this afternoon by VICTOR!! and tsk! tsk! did not choose who to infect after that... sorry to all who were affected and to those who still are. I paid with lots of the mighty CDN $$$ (was going to say 'bloody nose hair' but changed my mind!!) for my antivirus which checks all incoming and outgoing mail and it chose this afternoon to be absent. Well, it took a Web Administrator a while to find out she was under attack and then tracked me down to show me the way to healing. I am healed and there is still some folks on this list who are still not well. get a live update, and learn to be well. now, if only this headache would go away!! bye, and we are cold in Northern Alberta but I love the snow. and since I'm being gabby, I LOVE Natalie. I don't care if that big bone girl from Southern Alberta (kd lang) is thot to be pretentious because of how she pens her name, I think with a voice like hers, she can be what she wants to be!! sheesh! get a grip. sometimes I think we should keep our opinions to ourselves and that includes me. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2001 17:44:07 +1300 From: "hell" Subject: Re: viruses and attachment question (NJC) Rose wrote: > I've gotten the same email. it must be a worm attaching itself to anyone > who's been posting recently. Here's what my ISP sent me yesterday: "As you may have already heard or read about in the news or around the internet there's a rather nasty virus spreading all over the world called BadTrans.B. This memory-resident Internet worm is a variant of the older BadTrans.A and propagates via email clients that use Windows sockets such as Microsoft outlook, and Outlook Express. BadTrans.B can be identified as a blank email with an attachment which attempts to save itself to your hard drive automatically, (note: this may not occur on some email clients). A particular concern about Badtrans.B, is that it does not even require the email receiver to open the attachment for it to execute and cause an infection, (this is unlike other virus worms, which require you to run the attachment). BadTrans.B does this by using a known vulnerability in Internet Explorer-based email clients, (Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Outlook Express), to automatically execute the file attachment. We recommend that you have the latest version of browser and email program installed, as these are less likely to be affected by viruses, (eg: Internet Explorer versions less than 5.5, with service pack 2 will automatically open attachments). Once the attachment has been executed the virus drops a 'trojan', (well known for stealing password information and sending it back to the virus' creator), onto your PC and then forwards itself as a blank email to any addresses from any unopened emails you have. You can tell if your system has been infected by the trojan by searching your Hard Drive for a file called "kdll.dll". If that file is resident on your computer, then you've been infected. This is definitely one of the nastier viruses that we have had to cope with over the last year and is spreading extremely quickly. It is currently the 3rd most commonly spread virus in the world (astonishing considering it was only discovered on the 24th of November)." As always, your virus software is only as good as your last update, so download those latest patches! Happy computing Hell P.S. Victor - all viruses should NOT go to Hell, because I don't want them ;o)! ____________________________ "To have great poets, there must be great audiences too." - Walt Whitman hell@ihug.co.nz Hell's Personal Photo Page: http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~hell/main/personal.htm Visit the NBLs (Natural Born Losers) at: http://www.nbls.co.nz ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 21:55:16 -0800 From: Michael Paz Subject: Yes Info (NJC) For those of you in the UK that love Yes, here is a current schedule.
