But I just saw Life As A House and the version of BSN.. well, the wonderous song blew me away. Was it my imagination are the lines in the movie taken off the track, but it's not the whole track? or...is it a totally different recording Joni did? I loved the movie, by the way, sappy as it was, it touched me, and I thought some of the acting was great. NJC Bob and all, I'm checking my pulse, checking the CD player and quizzing jmdl'ers what could be wrong. One thing that's possible- I listen to the music way before engaging in lyrics. Off the bat, I got the sense that if I didn't pay attention to his lyrics, I just wasn't going to "get" what he's trying to do. And not being a Dylan fan, well....I've missed out on his poetry because I couldn't get beyond his sound. But my fellow music sluts here have raved about him enough for me to want to give him another spin. Even if I *still* don't get it, I do have to thank y'all for the heads up on Jonatha and XTC. Terry In a message dated 11/25/2001 8:30:25 PM Eastern Standard Time, SCJoniGuy writes: << Terry, play it with the silver side DOWN! ;~) Seriously, I suppose it's possible that you wouldn't like it...to me it has the same classic feel of Blonde on Blonde and Exile on Main Street, and incorporates a lot of those same earlt 70's r and r sounds. Enemy Fire puts me in the mind of Neil Young playing Ohio or Southern Man, and then Gonna Make You Love Me sounds like classic Zeppelin acoustic. Answering Bell is just crying out to be sung by Van Morrison. And then there's the jewel in the crown: Nobody Girl. 9:39 of perfectly crafted song...listen to the quiet start, how he builds it and then brings it to a majestic Rock n Roll climax. Wonderful. And then there's all those beautiful heartbreaking ballads. I don't know what advice I can give you...I loved this one the first time I heard it, and do so even more with each listen. Maybe you just don't care for his voice? Had to respond to the J. Armatrading discussion. I was an admirer back when too, early 80's? when I saw her with a band that was fabulous and stopped on a dime! I was on my way home from work here in SF and saw that she and her small band was performing in a very small venue in about an hour. I got off the streetcar and bought a ticket, excited at seeing her after so many years. She looks the same and sounds the same, literally. She played no new music, and rushed through each piece like she couldn't wait to pick up the pay and get out of there. No rapport, nothing genuine as I saw it. I was roundly disappointed. When this happens it makes me appreciate Joni more than ever, for staying creative and fresh, no matter what everyone wants to hear. Perhaps someone has had a different experience, and I hope Joan A. still writes and is staying creative.<< i saw joan play in cape town last year as an opening act(????) for afro celtic sound connection. absolutely great show!! the audience was all there to see her, & probably 2/3s of them disappeared after her show - which was a shame as afro celtic sound system are a great live show (esp as it was their first ever show on african soil). she also kind of rushed through her show, which was only around 40 minutes, but she did at least interact very nicely with the audience. took ages to get back out for an encore - but the crowd wasnt going to let her go. the crowd was interesting - ranging from young dope smokers to elderly folks of 60/70 plus dressed in furs & jewels - so i guess she has a pretty broad appeal. quite interesting in the break between her show & afro celtic sound connection. she was just kind of wandering around her own, checking out the crowd very unobtrusively. then some of the crowd spotted her, & tried to get an autograph. she kept saying she wasnt joan, she was her sister. she turned round, & saw me standing there laughing, & gave me a nice smile & a wink, which was kind of cool. so - does joan have a twin sister who looks & talks just like her???? ron ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2001 01:21:36 +1000 From: "P. I will definitely check out the book by Nicolas Slonimsky. It has been many a year since I took music theory, but I loved it with all of my heart. Hearing conversation like this is like being served a fine, satisfying dinner. I encourage anyone who loves Joni to check out a basic music theory course. It will enrich your love of Joni's music all the more. Maybe we can have some basics right here on the list, possibly starting by explaining modal and non-modal music. Any volunteers? My music theory is a bit rusty, but I am about to remedy that! Thanks again Fred and also Anne. Sorry, that's as far as I've read on posts so thank you to those who posts I am about to read as well. I've seen Joan about 8 or 9 times in concert, and except for the last time at the House of Blues in Chicago, they were all incredible. The HOB was especially disappointing after seeing her the time before that at the Vic. This was one great show, including a string quartet which she brought out for about half the set. This show was riveting from beginning to end. However, the HOB show bordered on the boring. She definitely looked like she was there to collect a pay check. I don't know what happened to her - is she finally so turned off by her lack of success that she's stopped caring? I really don't know, but I hope it is only a temporary situation. When she is on, she is one of the best. And while her later albums might be a little spotty, she still is capable of putting out some incredible stuff - Merchant of Love comes immediately to mind. I must admit that after the HOB show, I would be reluctant to go see her again, especially after reading similar comments, but based upon the number of times she blew me away, I'm sure I would break down and see her again, hoping she was just having a bad time on that tour.
