Terry www.addconsults.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Nov 2001 16:29:51 +0100 From: "Mike Pritchard" Subject: Re: Natalie Merchant NJC Natalie: Hmm, I'd never heard of her until I bought 'Tears of Stone' and heard her version of 'The Lowlands of Holland', a song I like very much but her version is a little bland, I feel. I have a version by Geraldine McGowan which I much prefer. I imagine there are many other versions out there and I wonder why the Chieftains decided to use NM's version. Cynics may say that it was to extend their fan base to include people who buy music by Bonnie Raitt, Natalie, The Corrs and so on but I doubt this was the idea. I think it was probably because it was bland enough to allow the Chieftains to put their music 'over' it. I like 'Tears of Stone' very much (except for the dreadful 'Danny Boy' by Diana Krall) but have the feeling that these types of album, recorded separately in different studios on different continents at different times just don't come together as a complete idea. There seems to be a lack of 'spark' between the participants. Another example would be the B. B. King duets cd; nice to listen to but check out 'The Thrill is Gone' with Tracy Chapman. It is so untogether that I don't know what it has going for it except novelty value (it may be that these tracks were recorded with both people in the studio at the same time but it doesn't sound like it). Which brings me to my second point, about singer songwriters. I think there is always something more personal in singing a song that you have written yourself. Nobody else knows the pain or joy that has caused someone to write a song and nobody but the author is able to express it in the same way as the writer. There are, of course, some caveats here: Firstly, I know there are many versions of great songs which ARE great in themselves, but this, I believe, is mostly a great musical performance rather than a great expression of the emotion in the song. Secondly, not all great songwriters are great singers and some people who write well and sing less well have been served well by better singers. Leonard Cohen, comes to mind here, especially the early songs. The more complex the content of the song, the more complex it is for other people to express it. Of course we must bear in mind that not all great singers have an idea in their head for a song and why should we deny Sinatra, Holliday, and so on a career? I think the analogy with film directors who write their own scripts is apt here. People like Woody Allen, Hal Hartley, Kurasawa, John Huston, not to mention many European directors (Truffaut, Godard, Rohmer, for example) some of whom write, direct (and frequently star in) their own movies. It seems to me to be a more complete expression of an idea. Not all directors can write and not all writers can direct but I tend to prefer films where the director writes his/her own script. Think of the Coens here. I can't imagine any other director doing 'Blood Simple', or 'Fargo', or 'Barton Fink'. OK, I can imagine it but I think it would be a poorer, and certainly a different film. That's my two pesetas on Natalie and Singer-Songwriters. mike in Barcelona np hejira - This is as good as joni gets, imho. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Nov 2001 16:55:53 +0100 From: "Mike Pritchard" Subject: Re: Joan Armatrading NJC Just want to add my comments on JA. D. I considered doing Joni Mitchell's songs. My idea was not greeted with any enthusiasm by anyone in the faculty, nor any other academic I spoke to. Because there is an Anglo-Canadian link in the faculty here in the University of Barcelona I decided to see if anyone in Canadian universities would be more helpful. I only got one response (from a great JM fan) and this was luke-warm to say the least. It was suggested that the songs alone were not sufficient as a base for a Ph. D. but perhaps something more 'sociological' would be possible. In the end I chose a different subject but my heart is not really into it and I am thinking of getting back to my original idea. I think that if one is going to spend 2 or 3 years doing this, one needs to believe in it, don't you think? Does anyone out there in jonilista land know of any Ph. D. theses written about Joni? What about other, shorter, academic work? I'd appreciate any help you(se) could give me. I know from reading this list that there are many people with expert knowledge of Joni's life and work and the archives alone (as well as the lyrics) would be a great boon to any research. I also know that there is a wealth of goodwill among the listers and this would help me considerably should I decide to go with this idea. The only problem I see here (except finding a doctoral supervisor!!) is having to listen to and read about JM for the next few years. This is not in itself a problem, but listening for academic purposes is not the same as it is for pleasure. My minor thesis was on Flann O'Brien and when I finished that I was sick of his novels for a good while. I would hate to feel the same way about Joni. Well, guys, what do you think? If you only get one chance to write your doctorate wouldn't you want to do it on something you love? Help; I may be getting myself into deep water here. mike in barcelona, NP 'Factory Girl'. I met Sting a few years ago when David Sancious was his keyboard player. My pal was the artist relations manager at Peavey and David was an endorsee. We went by the sound check at the local arena and I wtook Mikey who was very young at the time. We sat in the first row while my friend dealt with biz and David. Sting came out onto the stage with Dominic and a few of the others. He came by himself to the edge of the stage directly in front of where Mikey and I were sitting. Mikey looked up and said "Hi Sting!" and he just glared at him and said nothing. A minute or two must have passed of awkward silence and for some reason I did not feel comfortable addressing "your assholiness" myself. Sting turned on his heel and walked away. I have had so many encounters with artists up close and personal and most of the time artists can be so nice and friendly. I have always seen that intensity with Mr. Sting and always felt like he was an asshole after that, but it does not take away from him wonderful talent. It also just occurred to me that maybe he thought I was rude and unfriendly by NOT addressing him. Oh well I can't talk to ALL the fans. Here is an excerpt: 'Joni flew to the Caribbean for a six week vacation/writing expedition. Joni was also in the islands to get the feel of the music. Reggae was playing everywhere she went, and when she visited a local disco 3 or 4 times a week to dance, she heard the popular songs of the day. This was where she was introduced to the pop-rock polyrhythm music of groups like Steely Dan, Talking Heads, and especially the Police. She fell in love with their music. Joni told Musician magazine about her admiration for the Police: "Their rhythmic hybrids, and the positioning of the drums, and the sound of the drums, was one of the main calls out to me to make a more rhythmic album".' ******************************************** Kate Bennett www.katebennett.com sponsored by Polysonics www.polysonics.com Discover the Indies at Taylor Guitars: http://www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/bennett.html ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Nov 2001 15:55:06 -0500 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu \(Lama\)" Subject: Thanks! njc, sjc Thanks for the birthday wishes. Codex would like the manufacturer of all vitamins in the hands of pharmaceutical companies which would limit the potency and raise the prices of vitamins. Pharmaceutical companies have already been buying up vitamin companies in a trojan horse attempt to take over the industry. Additionally they have limited the sale of certain products like Red Yeast Rice by forcing the vitamin industry to remove any benefits from the product label and limiting any supporting ingredients i.e., garlic from the product. Vinnie Colauita plays drums, he (and of course Klein) toured with Joni in '83. Alejandro Acuna plays percussion, and he played on DJRD. And of course, David appears on NRH, lending a supporting vocal to "Nothing Can Be Done", and he was featured heavily in the video as well. And Les will back me up on this one: Baerwald's "Triage" is a GREAT record! I was an admirer back when too, early 80's? when I saw her with a band that was fabulous and stopped on a dime! I was on my way home from work here in SF and saw that she and her small band was performing in a very small venue in about an hour. I got off the streetcar and bought a ticket, excited at seeing her after so many years. She looks the same and sounds the same, literally. She played no new music, and rushed through each piece like she couldn't wait to pick up the pay and get out of there. No rapport, nothing genuine as I saw it. I was roundly disappointed. When this happens it makes me appreciate Joni more than ever, for staying creative and fresh, no matter what everyone wants to hear. Perhaps someone has had a different experience, and I hope Joan A. still writes and is staying creative. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Nov 2001 21:36:57 EST From: RoseMJoy@aol.com Subject: Happy Birthday!!!
