I think it's the Kenny Lattimore (sp?) vocal; it accompanies some techy company's promotion of a service that sends messages to American military people overseas. I love Joan Armatrading too (yet another immensely talented but under-recognized artist), though I haven't kept up with all her recordings. Down to Zero and Call Me Names stand out. Joan was one of the entertainers at the kick-off of the downtown Seattle holiday festival five-six years ago (on the Friday after Thanksgiving, actually). She stood on a high balcony in front of a shopping mall, in cold, pouring rain and cheerfully sang to an audience consisting largely of families-with-kids, most of whom had no clue who she was, I'm sure. Of course there were a number of crazed Armatrading fans in the rain too. Brian Kennedy: I do remember his lovely pop/jazz work in the early 90s (it was played locally by a particular radio station that has since stopped playing quality music and now plays shlock). But wasn't he Van Morrison's back-up singer/emcee during the Dylan/Mitchell/Morrison tour? I think so. Natalie Merchant: This isn't a diss, really. I have TRIED to like her. My Armatrading canon starts with her eponymous third album, and continue through Show Some Emotion, To The Limit, Me Myself I, the live album (Stepping Out?), the EP (Rosie?) and Walk Under Ladders. After that I sort of lost touch, but I still love listening to these albums. Saw her live only once, in Vancouver in 1980. Amazing show, and what an amazing guitar player. Great to hear from another fan!! Maybe you can give us all a fuller explanation of modal vs. non-modal. As someone who loves Indian music, I hear Indian qualities in Joni's music. Joni is a great admirer of John McLaughlin, whose own guitar playing has Indian influences. John and Joni are also fond of chord progressions which leave the upper strings as drones -- a sitar like quality. Or bagpipes. After learning to play a lot of Joni's songs on the guitar, you get to see that her compositions sometimes obey certain fingering patterns as opposed to harmonic ones. It's like some of her chords are happy accidents that pick up strange little hitch hikers ('scuse the mixed metaphor, but its appropriate). Standard tuning is the best one for guitarists to find fullest expression and accuracy, but it is often open and alternate tunings which force a composer to consider fresh melodies and irregular chord structures. I recall an interview in which Joni said Wayne Shorter questioned her about going from sus chord to sus chord without resolutions, but I think this is as much a question of the practical limitations of fingerings in an open tuning as it is an artistic choice. In the end, it is often Joni's little dissonance's which make her music so haunting and distinctive. I agree that in Joni's early work that her guitar pieces stand as almost separate compositions and that her later work became more of a basis for poetry that cannot be confined to less flexible melodies. This new format is playable as 5.1 audio on all DVD players (as I understand it) but the new DVD-Audio players will make available to the purchaser a high resolution version of "BSN". While the catalog I read today said that the DVD-Video compatible version is 5.1, I don't know if the hi-rez version is also more than 2 channels. The catalog doesn't state that the new disc has a CD layer, so you probably *can't* play it on your computer's CD-ROM, a Walkman style CD player, or a car CD player. Oh, yeah, you pay a premium for this DVD-A disc. As far as I know, "BSN" has not yet been available on vinyl, so the new hi-rez DVD-A may be the highest fidelity yet available of this title. If you must own it, www.amusicdirect.com or call 1 (800) 449 - 8333 in the USA. I haven't heard it and don't yet have a DVD player of any kind, let alone a DVD-Audio player. As is usually the case, Sony/Phillips have a competing, incompatible format. I recently heard Sony's SACD changer ($350 USD) and I was startled by the smoothness, shimmering cymbals, and transient speed from this modestly priced box. I just saw that they also offer a $299 single play SACD/CD/DVD-Video/CD-R player.
