But if you want the work to look like Vermeer, Sargent, or Norman Rockwell, > it's time to think values. It's interesting - Since my teachers did not provide the knowledge, I used to turn to looking at the works of these very painters and some other in an attempt to better learn how to paint. > I think Joni is looking for a happy medium between the two. She wants the freedom, but craves the form as well. > Part of her duality, I think. I think you are exactly right. I recall it being said here (maybe by Debra) that Joni seemed to be working out, or through, various influences and styles. I agree and also think that she may be doing this to teach herself how better to paint. Kind of a do-it-yourself practice with the masters in a way. For some it is easier to try to replicate from a visual experience than read it from a book (in the absense of a good teacher). As for me, I think it would take a lot to teach an old dog new tricks, but you never know. I do think you would be the most excellent "tutor" for Joni! You've managed to capture in just a few paragraphs what it took my art history professors weeks to describe! I too found that my painting classes were really lacking in the specifics of technique. The drawing classes, on the other hand, were quite good, as were the art history classes. I probably learned more technique, at least in theory, in my art history classes than in my painting classes! And I've forgotten so much! btw, we've got some really great threads going, I'm really savoring this little 'golden age' of the JMDL. lots of love Anne ------------------------------ Date: 21 Nov 2001 07:09:10 -0800 From: anne@sandstrom.com Subject: musical scales I was pondering the fact that much of Joni's music is modal (and, so is what I write, as it turns out.) I also like Pierre Bensusan, and his music is modal with a capital M! I always though the modal nature of Joni's music came from her guitar tunings. Anyway, I got to thinking about scales, and how Western music uses the chromatic scale. I recall Joni mentioning in an early interview that she listened to Japanese kyoto scales. I don't quite hear that in Joni's early music, although I do hear it in Ellen McIlwaine who grew up in Japan. You can hear that influence in her music, although one would categorize her loosely as blues. Is there a good Web site that compares various scales? I too am encouraged by the seeming returning interest among teenagers in singer/songwriters and good old fashioned guitar driven rock. My daughter is a good example. We only watched the bit of the Britney special because my daughter wanted to see "just how bad it is". She also recently declined to watch a TV special on which Nsync was appearing because she said their music was getting "boring" - I thought I was going to have a heart attack. This kid has been all about Nsync for the last 2 years - we have posters, calendars, dolls, you name it. Bob Muller's life work in the Joni Internet community is assembling and disseminating the covers. Bob is also extremely generous about making copies of a huge variety of Joni interviews and concerts on a "blanks and postage" basis on the "Music" type of CD-R. God bless Bob for his time and for being so generous with the Community. - -- On the other hand, Simon is the Archivist. As I see it, Simon focuses on 4 aspects of Joni's career. First, he unearths and catalogs the best sounding versions of the various recordings. If he finds an important recording like the Second Fret sets from Joni's coffeehouse days, he'll try to track down and borrow the original tape, archiving it to digital audio tape (DAT). He's been known to contribute video to Ashara's video project too. Secondly, Simon is building documentation of Joni's performances. This goes way beyond a discography, and includes performance dates, playlists, and personnel lists. It surprises me that no one has done the cataloging for Joni. I believe that in the Jazz world, for example, this kind of information is often assembled for artists of her stature. This documentation is used by music historians and critics for other artists all the time and frankly, it's a crying shame that nobody thought of it sooner. Third, Simon has orginized many of these recordings into various formats, a process called "mastering". For example, when a recording is distributed (a "tree") on premium cassette, the contents of Side A is different than when it is distributed on DAT. Mastering is a time consuming activity and is little appreciated unless you've done it. (Right Chuck?) Simon's trees have spanned Joni's entire career, from the pre-contract days to the Brian Blade-powered tour, to the "Both Sides Now" tour, to the "TNT Tribute". Simon's treed material ALWAYS includes thorough tracklists. For some performances, like the "TNT All Star Tribute to Joni Mitchell" and the "A Day In The Garden" show, more than one version is widely circulated, richly interesting, and historically important. This brings me to his fourth area of concentration. Four. Simon is perhaps most famous for "audience recordings" of Joni's shows. Without getting into exact details, lets just say that he has uhmmmm "acquired" and freely shared amazingly accurate, digital recordings from Joni's recent live performances. The better your stereo, the better these recordings sound. As an audiophile, I have written many times about the accurate bass and the uncompressed, grainless sound. I love being able to experience the "hall sound" of the Hammerstein Ballroom, just as the audience did at the TNT taping. While I also enjoy the TNT show as a stereo video, these audio qualities are completely absent from the soundtrack of the TNT show taken from the soundboard. So, anyway, that's a summary of Simon's roles in Joni's career and that's why Karen O'Brien acknowledged his contribution in her biography, "Shadows and Light". Lama ps. I'm proud to offer premium-quality cassettes of many of Simon's treed audio. Contact me offlist for details. One of my earliest and most prominent memories was of my parents constantly tuning in to watching Keely Smith and Louis Prima on TV. I always thought she had a cool name and looked just like my Aunt Marge ;-) They had quite a show. About a year or so ago, I was out driving and our former good station here had an incredible interview with her. This lady has had the most amazing life and is a marvelous storyteller. Back in the 70s I was a finalist in the American Song Festival lyric competition. One of the judges personally contacted me to ask if I had music to go with it and if I would submit a demo to his artist management company. While I was thrilled I was also a little taken aback by his name - Piggy Smith. But I corresponded with him and sent him a demo which he shopped around but was unable to "sell." He was very nice, however, and asked me to keep in touch with him. I later learned he was Keely's brother, the former head of A&R at Capital Records and somewhat of a legend! However, I found myself not really enjoying listening to it. He uses a lot of dissonance, and while I like dissonance I am not fond of dissonance sounding like it is purposeful and just out of place to be out of place. Hard to explain, but anyways... As I recall, Joni said that she was more interested in figurative painting and abstraction was the flavor of the day. So her instructors were somewhat dismissive of the type of painting she wanted to do. I don't remember what interview or article this is from but I believe she also said that students with a talent or inclination toward figurative art were more or less pushed toward commercial art and not viewed as serious artists. On the whole the experience was not a positive one for her & she most likely was not engaged enough to get much out of it. Remember that she quit piano lessons when her creativity was stifled. I suspect that she either didn't learn much in art school or 'unlearned' it when it didn't suit her.
