Last Wednesday, Amsterdam, the Concertgebouw. Diana Krall in Concert. The Concertgebouw is an amazing hall. Historic, built for concerts only and usually reserved for the greats from the world of classical music. The bill for the next three months shows only three non-YoYoMas & Sophie von Otters & the like. The acoustics of the hall are unbelievable. Even at capacity crowd, every whisper can be heard. Mikes are unnecessary. The sound is always crisp and natural, anywhere in the hall. The raised stage is inside the room so the performers are literally surrounded by people. The audience on the left and the right (officially the choir stands, but sold as seats when there is no choir) look down on the performers. The back of the stage is a gigantic 19th century pipe organ. It's Holland's sacred music temple. Diana was clearly impressed by the setting and seemed nervous. She thawed after the reception of the songs. And then something magical happened. Towards the end of the concert (mostly jazz & musical standards - with regular combo) she started playing the keys of the piano so softly and subtly that the instrument almost whispered. The entire audience literally fell silent. No coughing, nothing. The intro lasted minutes. And then she played a 10-minute version of A Case of You. Sooooo beautiful, I just could not believe it. I liked the Joni Tribute version. But this was nothing like that performance. The song had clearly grown on her. It came from her toes. When she was finished (just single keystrokes whereby the word 'stroke' is totally appropriate) there was silence. Just a few seconds. And then the applause ... more than 5 minutes. For one song. For a song that most of the audience didn't even know (it was very much the rich, evening dress & fancy suit older crowd). Diana did not go into the next song - none of the professional keep-the-show-going stuff. She just sat on her stool, looking at the ground and said: "I am so sad .... That was Joni Mitchell." She played only two more songs. All through the concerts she made snide and cynical comments to song lyrics "'Love can be so cruel' ... oh, don't I just know that!". Perhaps she just had a break-up experience of some kind. That may have helped. But whatever she was going through, she turned "A Case Of You" into an unbelievable experience. It was one of the highlights of my entire life as a concert goer. And Diana knew she had excelled herself. The Concertgebouw had once again worked its magic. As soon as I stepped out of the building, I walked over to a telephone booth to call my Joni soulmate in the US to share the experience. I needed too. After that, we went out for beers. A case seemed to be too much, I was a bit drunk already. Amsterdam is beautiful at night. I've been to a couple of shows that had those 'chillers', it's the kind of thing that really sticks with you. I caught Glenn Tillbrook last night. I didn't have any idea what to expect, and boy was I pleasantly surprised! He's got a new solo record out, so of course he was promoting that, but his show was totally spontaneous. He did about 2 hours of total requests, wandered off the stage into the audience, made all of us go out in the restaurant area where he played a song, pulled somebody out of the audience to sing, and of course pulled out all the old Squeeze songs that I love like "Tempted" and "Pulling Mussels From the Shell". Back to the girl he plucked from the audience...the first question she asked him was if he knew any Joni Mitchell! When that failed to trigger anything, she says "How about Tom Waits?" Well, I would have proposed to her right then & there but my wife was with me so I refrained. Anyway, they did a pretty version of "They Can't Take That Away From Me", seems she was a professional singer from Quebec, so it sounded great. Glenn really gave it his all, worked up a hearty sweat, and came out afterwards to chat with the crowd. I bought his CD and got an autograph. Cool. If you liked Squeeze and great brit-pop, I highly recommend spending a night with Glenn. WWWGlennTillbrook.com should have an updated tour schedule if you're interested. Dragged my daughter out to the boonies to watch the star show. First star I wished for peace. The second star for justice. The showers were so plentiful that I was able to wish for Joni to write again. Not that this is in any way a trivial wish, it just seems like with everything going on in the world...well, you all know what I mean. What a wonderful sight, and to be able to share it with my daughter made it that more meaningful. I said to her that this certain set of circumstances making this display so awesome wouldn't occur for over 100 years. I said that we would both be dead when this happened again. She said maybe not, and then that made me wish for even more things...All the good in the world science can bring and all the bad. Anthrax scares and bombs dropping in the same moment these meteors streak through the early morning sky. Sorry, rambling. Joni writing again, new material to listen to....that really is something to wish for... These all sound completely different to me...>> Funny you should ask, because as I was listening to the Laura I was wondering what two Joni records sounded as similar to one another. Although STAS & Clouds are basically her with her guitar, the songs on STAS seem to be much more dense. Pirate of Penance, like almost all of that record, would sound out of place on Clouds. Of the others you mention there are certainly overlaps...Willy and Rainy Night House and For Free would sound right at home on Blue, I think. Carey and This Flight Tonight would fit on FTR, Barangrill and See You Sometime and Ludwig would blend in unnoticed on C&S. And so on. While there are stylistic differences from album to album, there are bridges from one to the next, at least until you go from Mingus to WTRF (just considering studio albums). << As different as daylight and dark to my ears. >> Your EARS can sense daylight & dark? I still can't believe it happened. I had just laid down in bed and set the alarm for 4am so I could get up and watch the meteor shower when the phone rang. It was Jack asking if it was ok if he and Steven dropped by to catch the meteor show (as the it was too bright downtown). I got up and went outside to wait for them and thank God I did cause I would have missed most of the show. It was quite beautiful here and the sky was clear and I saw quite a few. Then my wife came out and joined me and about that time, the limo pulled around the corner and I was saying hello to someone who changed my life, brought there by someone else who changed my life by introducing me to acoustic music over 30 years ago. We all talked awhile and did the "ooo ahhh" thing at the sky for awhile. Steven went inside to the rest room and caught an eye full of my studio (filled with keyboards and guitars and such). He commented that if the light show didn't get any better we should have a play. Well about a quarter to four the fog rolled in big time. Steven asked if he could play my new keyboard and show us a song he is working on. I programmed a drum beat into the loop machine and we were off. The groove wasn't just right so I turned off the machine and played an instrument I have called the Cajon (from Peru). Jack sang harmonies and we were treated to a sneak peak of new Steven to come. He picked a rhodes sound and it is sort of shuffle with a 6/8 feel. It was really surreal to be in my own studio with my best friend jamming with Stills. Sadly, Jack had to pick up another fare and started to make preperations to leave elsewise we might STILL be there playing. For a long time I have been friends with Steven's brother (Butch) who lives here in New Orleans and thought that maybe one day I would be lucky enough to be able to meet Steven with him, but in the long run I guess our paths were meant to cross all on their own. We talked about the new forthcoming CSNY tour and bass players and drummers, the old days when he use to live in Louisiana, we spoke in Spanish (which he has a powerful command of) and had a very pleasant visit. I started to post last night after they zoomed off, but I was so excited I just wanted to savour the moments. When Rickie Lee did her first TV appearance on Saturday Night Live supporting her first album, she did in fact do "Chuck E's In Love" first, and then later in the show did "Coolsville." I have a videotape of the show. I do remember when I first saw her I was blown away and immediately ran out to buy the album. Saturday Night Live sure showcased some great talent back in the early days. I have many of the old shows on tape. I must admit I haven't been able to really get into Rickie's newer stuff though. I did always think that Jennifer Warnes has been an extremely underrated singer/songwriter. I haven't heard her new CD called "The Well" yet but am anxious to pick it up, next time I head to the music store.
