I am not trying to be difficult, I really am intrigued by this. I have always thought she was just being her own natural self...though somewhat influenced by her boyfriend Tom. ******************************************** Kate Bennett www.katebennett.com sponsored by Polysonics www.polysonics.com Discover the Indies at Taylor Guitars: http://www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/bennett.html ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Nov 2001 18:08:25 -0800 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: Natalie >>>Natalie has ecome *the* epitome of pretentious inger-songwriterdom to me.<<< You know I just never got why she was so big. Amen! I'm so glad to hear there are others who don't like Natalie. My husband likes her, and I can stand her for about 10 minutes every 6 months or so. Then I start climbing the walls. Fortunately, he doesn't play her stuff very often. "Tossa" makes *me* think of coughing for some reason (probably some romance language connection). Yeah, I could never get it, either. I felt she had the potential to really sing beautifully but was mucking it up with some kind of add-on vocal "mannerisms." It's always hard for me to watch and listen to her without feeling slightly annoyed. I'm with you on Rickie Lee, too, I think that's just how she is - she's always been that way from the beginning and if it wasn't really her, it sure would have been hard to put it on all these years. I think she and Waits had a tremendous influence on eaach other. I loved seeing the pics from the Joni Tribute! It looked so great! Hope there is a way to get a recording out sometime. I did meet her once when she played Chastain back when Tigerlilly came out. I talked to her for a minute about singing and tried to quote some dr.suess lyrics. I had a big crush on her for about six months, and kept hoping she would call me. Well personally I love 'Drag'. I think it has some of her best singing on it. I also like 'Invincible Summer' quite a lot. So she wanted to make a fun record. Is that so wrong? I don't know if you were reading the JMDL when I wrote about seeing RLJ last summer but this was almost my identical reaction. She's genuinely feeling everything she sings and I found out she is very real & very moving. I'm curious what you think of 'Ghostyhead', Michael. It's not the easiest record for me to listen to but I do think it's brilliant. I think maybe Colin posted it, but I'm not sure. But here's the kicker, as we say in the ad biz - -- I don't know how much eggnog I had in me when I read it last year, but I thought this story ACTUALLY HAPPENED to Colin (or whoever posted it). Lou Reed's "Magic and Loss" immediately comes to mind. I don't know "Ghostyhead," or what it is about that album that isn't easy for you to listen to, but "Magic and Loss" is sooo dark and depressing, it makes "Blue" sound like musical comedy. But musically and lyrically, "Magic and Loss" is a work of genius. It's just too bad I can't listen to it more than once a year or so. --Bob ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Nov 2001 02:49:46 EST From: FredNow@aol.com Subject: Re: What Is An American? njc Rhymes46@aol.com wrote: >The whole point of the post was that it came to me from someone who is >NOT an American.
