A friend of mine in Austin sent me a copy of last year's and he said they sell out almost immediately. As Sybil noted, these are all in-studio performances and sound great. A lot of artists you normally wouldn't be exposed to are on compilations like these. Definitely worth checking out if you're into the harder edge side of country and folk music. As for alt-country, I've gotten into this genre a lot lately. Worth checking out are the Jayhawks, Son Volt/Uncle Tupelo/Jay Farrar, and a multitude of others. I jsut picked up an issue of the magazine "No Depression" and likewise is worth at least a strum through in your local Borders. Talks a lot about country and bluegrass music from this century. And I didn't infer that you thought Afghan music was inferior. It's just that why should we assume they would want to listen to any American music? Sigh. As a long-time veteran of the memory wars, let me just say that the position of "recovered memories are always false" is not any more accurate than "recovered memories are always true". for reference, see Christine Courtois's book Recollections of Sexual Abuse (1999). It is far too complex a situation to draw such simplistic conclusions. There was a ton of abuses in the 90's, but in my opinion the pendulum has swung too far in the opposite direction. For your sake, I'm glad that you haven't suffered from it. There is a large body of literature that shows that sexual abuse is not always traumatic, although it certainly can be and especially when it's in the family, that's very hard. also, Walt, where did you get the idea that anyone would associate child abuse with your being homosexual? I thought that belief went out a long time ago. I'd hope no one on this list would show such poor judgement. Hell, I wonder if even Dr. Laura would be that stupid. And Dr. Laura is, frankly, one of the people who most pisses me off of anyone on the face of the earth. A > bit of a poser to me, even though she picked a great one to copy. In a word, > overrated. Ok people, who does this remind you of? I used to think pretty much the same thing about Rickie Lee, Billy. I was dead wrong. She is an original and if she was similar to Laura in the beginning, she has since taken her music into territory that Laura never ventured in to. I'm still getting to know a lot of her stuff but I think the poetry in 'We Belong Together' and 'Living It Up' is a match for anything Laura and possibly even Joni ever wrote. (Omigod is that blasphemy or what?) There are other examples as well. And quite frankly, I find Rickie's voice easier to listen to than Laura's. Don't get me wrong. I love Laura. There's never been a more passionate singer & I am constantly in awe of her courageous vocals. But I like Rickie Lee's voice better. Who can say why? When I saw Rickie Lee Jones in concert, I really became a true fan. Try one of her later releases if you think the first two are too much like Nyro. 'Flying Cowboys' has some great stuff. And most people don't seem overly fond of 'Traffic From Paradise' but I like it a lot. I'm so glad my friend Melanie introduced me to that record. Otherwise I might have been tempted to put it on the back burner. 'Stewart's Coat', 'Altar Boy' & 'Running From Mercy' are all great songs. > And sorry Mark. I would agree that 'Eat to the Beat' is the superior record and 'Autoamerican' was pretty wretched. But 'Parallel Lines' is also a great record and parts of 'Plastic Letters' is pretty darn good as well. In my mind, there is no way to compare she and Joni. Both incredible artistic geniuses, one NO better than the other. All this talk has prompted me to have a Laura night today, and I must say, thoroughly enjoyable. Laura's first album is titled "More Than Just a Discovery". What a debut! Please remember, she was only 19 when this was released- she was still living at home with her parents, brother and cats! And what classic songs- Goodbye Joe, And When I Die, Stoney End, Wedding Bell Blues, He's a Runner....... truly remarkable. I had the incredible pleasure of seeing her live when I was 16, in Toronto- 30 years ago!!!! It was absolutely amazing, to say the least.
