Mack ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Nov 2001 12:46:20 +0100 From: "Mike Pritchard" Subject: One of the Hollywood Ten NJC I haven't notice anyone mention 'The Salt of the Earth' in their desert island films and I'm astonished to note that I didn't mention it either in my list. 'Astonished' because it is a film that is perhaps more important to me than any other for reasons that are too numerous to explain but basically because it is a heartlifting movie and so rich in explorations of cultural conflicts in many fields, including male/female, anglo/chicano, worker/boss, socialism/capitalism, rich/poor, community/individual and others. It is a film that I have written extensively on and lectured on many times here in Spain and one I would recommend to all who have not seen it. I write this because yesterday a film about the making of 'The Salt of the Earth' opened here in Barcelona. It was made by a Welsh director with Welsh, British and Spanish financing and was shot largely in Spain, as far as I can tell, or at least the location shots were. It stars Jeff Goldblum as Herbert J Biberman, director of 'Salt', Greta Scacchi as his wife Gale Sondergaard, and Angela Molina as Rosaura Revueltas who played the lead in 'Salt'. The film is entitled 'One of the Hollywood Ten' and is directed by Karl Francis. It is hard to be objective about this film, given my feelings towards it, but I urge anyone who has seen 'Salt' to see it. It seems to me the perfect time to have made this film, given the current climate where freedom of expression seems under threat and any 'dissenting voices' (including on this list) are treated as 'undemocratic' or 'marxist inspired' 'un-American' or whatever else. The one thing I don't understand about 'Hollywood Ten' is why they changed the character's name from Esperanza, a very hopeful name in Spanish, to Esmeralda. If anyone can explain this I'd like to hear it. I believe the film will open in the USA in the near future. mike NP Beth Orton 'Trailer Park' ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Nov 2001 12:06:08 -0000 From: "Paul Castle" Subject: Guitar discussion Kate - so pleased to hear the tribute went well - how I would have loved to be there. I do have to admit that I have read one Toni Morrison novel and of course it's 'Beloved'. But I do think it's an amazing book. I confess, there was some of it that I just didn't get and those parts may have been a bit more obtuse than necessary. But overall I think 'Beloved' is a powerful and beautiful work. To each his own. I may not be as enthusiastic about any of Morrison's other books if I ever get around to reading any of them. I've been reading the Joni bio. When I finish that I will either take up Virginia Woolf's 'The Voyage Out' or re-read Hardy's 'Far From the Madding Crowd' which I don't think I've read since high school. I picked both of these up recently in one of Seattle's many used book stores. One of the many reasons I feel in love with the place 23 years ago... Discuss? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Nov 2001 13:57:51 -0800 From: "Mark or Travis" Subject: Shadows & Light bio This morning I read the section of Karen O'Brien's book titled 'Dreams and False Alarms'. This chapter covers Joni's stint with Rolling Thunder and the recording of 'Hejira', 'DJRD' and 'Mingus'. There were a couple of what appear to be minor discrepancies in this section. Maybe I'm wrong so I thought I'd throw this out to y'all. When talking about 'The Last Waltz', Karen says Joni returned to the stage 'to join Neil Young on harmony vocals when The Band played 'Acadian Driftwood'. Now the only song I'm aware of that Joni sang harmony with Neil on in 'The Last Waltz' was 'Helpless'. I'm not familiar with 'Acadian Driftwood'. Was it performed in 'The Last Waltz' concert and if so, did Joni provide harmony vocal? The other thing that didn't sound right to me was in reference to the Rolling Stone interview that Joni did at the time 'Mingus' was released. Karen says the interview as done by Ben Sidran. The only Rolling Stone interview that Joni did in this time frame that I'm aware of was with Cameron Crowe. Was there another one with Sidran? Inquiring Joni minds want to know! Otherwise I am really enjoying reading this book. Most of Karen's take on Joni's career is right on the money, imo. And why isn't Joni writing these days, as Lama was asking? Or is she? Kakki seemed to think recent events may have stimulated her muse again but is it really disgust with the music business that has silenced her pen since 'Taming the Tiger'? I still maintain that record had some lovely & interesting new work on it & I still want more. Mark E. PS: In reply to Anne Sandstrom's post of a while back, I also read Joni's mock introduction of Mohammed Ali. My take is that she was fed up with all of what she probably perceived as pseudo-liberal championing of a man that she had begun to think might not be so innocent after all. So she shot her mouth off. Also, it sounds like she & Ms. Baez were not particularly simpatico on the Rolling Thunder stint and we've had hints that their relationship has been thorny over the years. Was it appropriate or pc? No. Does it mean she's a racist? No, I most certainly do not think so. Most all of us have made less than pretty remarks at one time or another that we maybe regret. Taken out of context some of them can be pretty damning. And sometimes put in context they can still be pretty damning. But I don't think one remark necessarily frames a person's whole character and attitudes. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Nov 2001 14:09:55 -0800 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: One of the Hollywood Ten NJC Mike wrote: > It is hard to be objective about this film, given my feelings towards it, but > I urge anyone who has seen 'Salt' to see it. Oh dear, Mike. I believe I'm the only one who has discussed the marxist dissenters. My context was the marxist groups in the U.S. who are against our current actions simply IMO because they are against anything that the U.S. does to begin with and are sometimes moved more by anarchist or other motivations more than anything else. I have clearly said that dissent is part of being a free American. I have seen much written in the past few months (outside the list) that has come from marxist sources and then seen people who don't know the source grab onto and believe the propaganda. I only wish to make the point that there should be a separation between those voices and other antiwar groups. To at least clarify my own viewpoint, I do think "any" dissenting voice is "undemocratic," "marxist" or "un-American." Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and opinions. I can't recall if I have seen Salt of the Earth but it sounds familiar and like it is a classic. Joni's full set (or at least some of the bonus songs) is available on one of the 'Unplugged & Jamming' volumes. It features: Helpless (joni in the backing vocals, but you can hear her well) Coyote (this one was on the officail release) Shadows & Light (a cool arrangement using The Band) Furry Sings The Blues Acadian Driftwood This CD also contains lots of other cool stuff, like the Johnny Cash TV stuff, some duets with Pete Seeger (Mr. Tambourine Man, Both Sides Now) & a couple other things as well. Of course it's available to anyone for blanks & postage. Bob, heading out to see Victor in Cosmic Charlie. When Stephen and I were talking with her a month ago, I asked her something about why she wasn't writing anymore. She said "no one wants to hear what I have to say anymore." We loudly protested this and then she admitted "this war has got me writing again." My own personal hunch is that Joni is probably brimming over with music and lyrics from recent events (and also perhaps the concurrent break-up with Donald). I've thought for awhile now that she still has some of her greatest albums yet to come, whether she wanted to focus on that in recent years or not. Visiting Austin on a business trip in about 94/95, I dropped in at the Continental Club on a recommendation to hear Toni's famous Happy Hour / Hippie Hour set. I was squeezed in, this stranger from the UK, bottle of Shiner Bock in hand, next to a nice woman who introduced herself as Dorothea and said she was Champ's friend. It was a fabulous show, really great atmosphere. Champ played guitar and fiddle, the great Rich Brotherton and 'Scrappy' Newcomb also on guitars, Toni sang her heart out. After the show, Dorothea said it was Champ's birthday and would I like to share his birthday cake? Which I did. Shook his hand and said "thanks for the show". Last Christmas, a friend who lives in Austin and knows a little about my passion for Austin music gave me a great gift of a local cassette-only release of the Threadgill Supper Sessions - the Threadgill Troubadours being the all star band that Champ led at a legendary Austin eating place. I almost bled that tape dry over the Christmas season. Beautiful soulful music. Farewell, Champ Hood. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Nov 2001 16:34:37 -0800 (PST) From: Nuriel Tobias Subject: The Last Waltz 2002 Hi everyone In case you don't already know, i'm happy to let you know that: The Band - The Last Waltz - 117 min. - MGM/UA - Warner Home Video R-18 Laserdisc: MGM Home Video - ML 100482 DVD and remastered CD w/ bonus tracks to be released in 2002. I enjoyed it tho wasn't particulalry moved by it. It described a life foreign to me. I wasn't sure what the film was trying to say. Come to think of it, the so called 'ugly guy', who wasn't by any means, was the real character and said much of what such a life can be. Why the hell he'd agree to impregnate his sister's lover-a real nasty piece of work-I don't know. I guess for me the film was niether one thing nor the other. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Nov 2001 01:17:53 +0000 From: colin Subject: peerfection a turn off? My dear friend Joudy who i still now 22 years later, said that beautiful people are so used to being adored they don't bother. Most of the people I feel attracted too are not usally conventionally good looking. I once had a terrible crush on a man I used to see regularly at a meeting. I broke my foot and was on crutches. he gave me a lift home and because i had to go up a couple of flights he carried me!(I was 19 and slim at the time) I was so embarrassed and thrilled at the same time. he was short, fat with a big gut, bald on top and a heavy Irish accent. But his eyes and smile just made my stomach flip and my legs feel like jelly. I would blush whenever he spoke to me. To me it is in the eyes and smile. Yes, I find good bodies attractive but that is just lust. It dooesn't last. I am now 43 almost, fat and john is 54 and hardly the body beautiful. It is as well it is love that keeps us together and not lust.Nothing, but nothing, beats making love with someone you love and know so well. The feeling is very hard to explain but nothing else has ever got me there except for a few times when i have had a spiritual experience in other circumstances(meditation, healing group, being in the mountains of New England). It is like we merge, our spirits blend, pure, leaving the bull behind. Sort of like how I think dying must be. Like a line from a Carly song-'I wish you were an ocean so i can jump to you'. Help! Somebody stop me from spending...!!! I broke down and ordered the Joni Audio book from Amazon.com.uk. I figured the worst thing that could happen is it was meant to be released but wasn't. And the best thing that could happen would be an hours (?) worth of Joni in conversation, which would make the thing worth it's weight in gold. Funny bit of extra... When I hit the click, Amazon had a link to yet another joni Item, an E-book in adobe format: Joni Mitchell, Both Sides Now illustrated by Alan Baker. Now the question is... do I break down and order this as well??? If it's just the lyrics to the song with pictures... forget it. But who knows... it might be more. Arrrggghhhh!
