It's killing a child. > This is the extreme end of this sickness. Mostly it is molestation, inappropriate touching, forced oral sex. unfortuantely most people equate peodophilia with strangers and rape/murder and as a result the effects of the other more insidious forms it takes tend to be minimised. If a child wasn't raped and or killed, then it couldn't have been that bad could it? The MAJORITY of sexual abuse is committted by parents on their children. As with all other forms of abuse. The mjaority of such abuse is carried out by heterosexual men(and not because the percentage of gay men is smaller). Many women abuse too. Most of the children taken to hopstial who have been abused were there because of what a woman did to them.(this being the case for under 4's). Any form of abuse, but particularly sexual, has a devsating effect on the mind and soul of a child that stays with them for their whole life. One of the unwanted side effects of abuse being more talked about now is that it is minimised. People tend to think 'oh a few visits to a therapist and they'll be okay'. It couldn't be further from the truth. Abuse of children is devsating to the child and has wide and appallling ramifications, not least of which is the ongoing abuse. Whilst it is NOT true that abused children will in turn abuse, it IS true that 99.9% of abusers were abused themselves. No matter how old one gets, the abuse memories and it's effects are ALWAYS there. It is never wiped out. The reminders are there 24/7. It becomes so inbedded in the psyche that it is often not noticed even tho the negative effects are apparent to anyone who looks. Trust is the major issue for abuse survivors. Lack of trust in others and oneself is toxic to a good life. The inability to see children and not think about your own childhood and not think 'i wonder what is happenign to them'. Innocence destroyed. Sex and sexuality forever being sullied. Every thought and action and experience is coloured by what the abuse.(as ALL our experiences colour the present). the abuse of children is the most important situation that we as a society(world) must adress. Todays world is the direct reslut of our refusing to acknowledge this and act upon it. The indoctrination of children in hate is also abuse and high on the list of what must stop if we are to find peace. The best way to comntinue in conflict is to contniue to minimise, ignore, deny the abuse of children. bw colin ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Nov 2001 09:28:48 +0100 From: M.Russell@iaea.org Subject: RE: Broadlahn - njc When I wrote the other day about Broadlahn, one of my sentences somehow got munched. Always have and always will. I>M>H>O I think its an archetypal thing and the combination of ugly beauty, vulnerable wounded strength, that fabulous over the top acting and a voice to die for like no other. There are qualities that run through all the fag icons that i think Gay men can identify with. Babs life isn't tragic like judys was which is where judys appeal lay, but she does have a thing with the absent father, which i certainly relate to. These combinations, to gay men are hugely appealing. The ugly duckling story was written to describe the experiences of people like babs and gay men all over the world. She knows our lot and we know hers. Not that we are ugly but rather we are seen by many as unappealing. One of the greatest moments shared with me by a fellow gay school mate was at a school reunion he attended. On his arrival he was confronted with a bunch of miserable middle aged over weight disgruntled breeders who looked haggered and spent. He however was full of life, youth and a most potent weapon; an outlook on life that kept him happy and sane. He'd struggled through the Struggle and came up smelling of roses! Gay Men do have the ability to turn the crap thats thrown at them into gold. We are alchemists and as such attract a mixture of jealousy, hatred admiration and love from those around us. Also when you look at big Stars that contribute to fund raising for aids awareness, whos there in the front line? Babs and Liz. Once, buying a magazine, I got the French for 4, 14 and 40 all mixed up, gave the guy the wrong money and got yelled at, but that was the only time. Michele and I spent a week in 1997 visiting Paris and then driving down through Lyon and Avignon to Nice to catch the train to Venice. No problems. We spent our honeymoon on the French side of St. Martin, and have vacationed twice on St. Barts. I have always found the French to be appreciative of my attempts at the language, even as Deb (?) mentioned if they switch to English after a few sentences. :) In most of my travels I've found that maintaining a low profile and trying to fit in with the way the locals act, eat, etc. has been the way to go. When we got to Venice, we got yelled at for lugging our luggage on to a rush hour vaporetto - of course, we were interfering with people trying to get to work, and should have realized that. I think the hotel I stayed at on French St. Martin really catered mostly to tour groups and people from France and so I was an "outsider." From the moment I arrived, they said I didn't have a reservation and scowled when I handed over my printed confirmation. They would not help me with my bags, they put me in a room with half the lights out and a broken TV, they tried to double charge me when I checked out and so on. It was a horrible experience and I don't think I'm so much of an "ugly American" to have brought it on myself! Luckily I had friends staying at a nice resort down the street and spent most of my waking hours over there! Maybe there are just pockets of snobbism anywhere one might go. The food was way worth it, though ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Nov 2001 01:02:39 +0000 From: colin Subject: weird NJC We have been experiencing warm weather here in the UK. I am watching the music man. Love it. What a movie. "we got trouble, right here in river city" My favorite musical of all time. Nothing else is close. Don't care that much for musicals with a few exceptions but did not like Oklahoma or South Pacific at all. Love Robert Preston. Superb in this movie and in Victor, Victoria, the film. When he came out at the end of the movie in the dress, that was great. Very sad he has left us. Saw the Broadway version on Bravo the other night. Tony Roberts just won't do. Also loved Preston in Finnegan, Begin Again. While I was kidding, it got me thinking...why is it that there are these things that seem to stick? When I was a kid, I was fully aware that I was gay, and I was fully aware that I was into a lot of things (particularly music and Hollywood) that made my parents uncomfortable, but didn't realize the connection between the two until later. Grace Jones, Madonna, Boy George, Cyndi Lauper, (and the one the made my dad the most uncomfortable) Bette Davis...I later realized as I grew up were often labeled as "gay icons", and I figured oh well, makes sense to me. What it is about these THINGS (often women, in my case at least), that is appealing? I have my own ideas, but I'm curious to know what others think. And - I apologize if this is getting tedious. I know this isn't gayplanet, but this is by far the most interesting group of people I've come across on t he net, and one who I love to survey...:) (Was that Julie Webb I read the other day??
