I would equate it with the line about symphonies & dirty trees...maybe she's making a dichotomy out of it, saying that the same culture that has symphonies has to put up with dirty trees, just like the same city streets that can be used for peace parades are subject to being patrolled by meter maids. In that list of parks and plastic clothes cars and buses and cripples seeling balloons and the rush hour of buyers and sellers, making Joni seem like Lot escaping from his flaming city, mentioning the peace parades is weird, and the fact that Joni's included them in her "grey" list is (for my eyes only, Dear Bob) a statement. "Humans are hungry for worlds they can't share" (Song to a Seagull) is surely not mocking the unshared worlds. It's grieving them. As i see it the peace parades are another lost world humans can't share and the way Joni's mentioning them in Nathan makes it seem like they're also caught in the city dirty games. I always felt that if Joni had to choose between joining a peace parade and getting back into the garden she would've chosen to go back to day 1 and create a new world. I realy liked what you said about the fact that Joni's presumably on the plane and flying. I sometimes think that Nathan is like that old man from the Greek Myth that's passing the souls from one side of the river to other. I guess it's the coins theme in the song. Mission accomplished so as I drove by Hastings Book and Record Store and decided that I deserved a treat. Had not been to a record store in months and have worked hard so in I went, full of excitement and pondering what Joni album I would buy. I thought to myself that I don't have Hissing of Summer Lawns and anything with that kind of title has to be marvelous. I sauntered through the many titles allowing my appetite to grow and be thoroughly whet when I reached the M section and fantasized about the places that dear Joni would take me with this album. Passed through the Soul section and spent much time there, hoping to see something familiar that I did not have. No such luck and did not recognize most of the titles anyway. Spotted Tina and hoped that it would be something I did not have. No luck again. Finished that aisle and turned around to find the rap section staring me in the face. Ugh! EEEEk! As quickly as possible I ran, desperate to escape from even proximity to that. By this time I had been in the store for 15-20 minutes or so. Of course they were playing tunes on the speaker that went throughout the store. I didn't recognize any of them either and had not yet heard one that I liked or even found the least bit talented or interesting. I asked the girl behind the counter what was playing. She told me it was a compilation of sorts (paraphrasing her response) of the top hits of today. I could not resist saying that I thought they all sucked. She gave me an odd look. Back to my search I went. Moving over to the pop section I was growing really uncomfortable and rather sick to my stomach having to listen to the shit wafting through the air so I decided to cut to the chase and find Joni and get out of there. I spied her name and there behind the plastic card were three cd's. Court and Spark, Hits, and Ladies of the Canyon. Fuck, I thought. I have those. Damnit. How could a store this size not have more than this? Fully disappointed I searched for some kind of replacement but no Bonnie, no Carole, no Melissa, no Hall and Oates, no Luther; that I did not already have. The shit continued to fill my head. I thought "I AM IN HELL" I again approached the clerk and asked her if she had any Joni in the back. "Who?', she said. Joni, Joni Mitchell, I said. "I've never heard of her", she giggled. I said "never mind". Thought I would give the cassette tape section a try before I left. No Joni there at all. Moved over to the soul section but it was not there. Found all the R and B and music that had been called soul when I was growing up labeled Urban. What's with that? Who thought that up? Again, defeat. No Stylistics, no Spinners, no Earth, Wind, and Fire. Did find a Betty Wright tape that looked good but cost too much in relation to how much I like her. Thought I should buy something since I came in here. Finally just gave up and left. Got into the car and plugged Court and Spark back into the player. Another fruitless search for satisfaction in Central Texas. Just earlier this week, I was driving to Holley's house and on the way, saw a record store advertising a "closing sale". Always looking for a bargain, I pulled over and walked in. As soon as I stepped in the door, I knew I was in the wrong place. Over the speaker was blaring some hardcore rap music, where every other line had the word n**** in the lyrics, the only music in the store appeared to be rap and some soul, the two people in the back didn't even acknowledge I had walked in and feeling like a complete moron, I slowly made my way out, after pretending to check out the cd's on the wall. I find it interesting that so many of my favorite musicians are black artists...Stevie Wonder, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Bob Marley..but this music just alienates me...definately a cultural gap. Sour grapes plus gloating... well, that gets my attention. As far as the Yankees doing well only because they have the most expensive players... that's what we usually say about the Atlanta Braves, whether it's true or not, especially when they're winning so often. I mean there's got to be some simple reason for a team's success, right? When it's the other team, that is. I don't know if the Yankees have the highest-paid players now. Maybe, but I don't think so since many of them have been with the team for a long time. With several players retiring or leaving for other reasons, it's anyone's guess as to what next year's team will be like, although Steinbrenner probably will be spending plenty of cash. I doubt that he's the only team owner who does that, though. I'd guess the payroll of the Diamondbacks is pretty hefty since the team is only four years old and yet they've managed to win the Series. Whether they won mostly because of fine-tuned teamwork or mostly because of their two star pitchers doesn't really matter now. People here saw the Yankees losing as something else to be depressed about, rather than as a tasty anything. Considering how subdued New Yorkers are these days because there's no escaping what happened here not long ago, it's amazing to me that the Yankees got as far as they did this year. Anyway, celebrate now, because next year... ya never know. I think there's something in what Bob said about Joni being somewhat ambivalent about leaving the City. She talks about the 'ghostly garden' but when she lists the things it grows with, she mentions symphonies (culture, beauty, positive) along with the dirty trees (pollution, negative) and parks (peaceful, positive) along with the plastic clothes (superficial, negative) and peace parades (positive action) along with the meter maids (money-grubbers, negative) and wishing wells (hopeful, positive) along with the burglar bells (negative, crime, fear, paranoia). So she does still have a few positive things to say about the City. I think she is saying she is sad that she will have to give up the parks & the peace parades & the wishing wells to get away from the other negative stuff. The verse about gangs and girlie shows doesn't fit this pattern, however. I can't see that Joni would find anything she would miss about gangs or girlie shows. I thought Ellen was wonderful (no surpise, there!) - she's so funny, and seemed so at ease with the crowd. I thought she totally deserved the standing ovation (and seemed very humbled by it) - she handled the show with the perfect mix of humour and sensitivity. Her comment, "what would annoy the Taliban more than a gay woman in a suit, in front of a crowd of Jews" was brilliant. I notice she was one of the writers, too. I was waiting for some comment about Anne Heche when she was with Steve Martin, though, although maybe that subject is just a little too personal! I thought it was Barbra when the song first began (before she came on screen) and was blown away. She hasn't lost any of her singing ability - a beautiful rendition of that song, even if it is forever linked in my brain to the Liverpool Football Club! She was incredible. They only screened the "highlights" here last night - about 1 1/2 hours worth, but I'll probably watch the whole thing this coming Sunday - all three hours. It's worth another look! No surprises in the Emmy's themselves, although I thought Eric McCormack was a surprise winner - I always think Jack and Karen are the real stars of Will & Grace! I have this mission to hook up with Victor and Bob this weekend. It's all so crazy! My husband Scott, (that guy) had to fly to Minneapolis. He's drinking a Guiness right now with old lister, Brad Fors listening to "The Front Porch Swinging Liquor Pigs." When I was, you will pardon the expression, young, I was far more into Barbra Streisand than I was into that Mitchell woman. I have vivid memories of standing in front of the Winter Garden Theater late late late at night, a high school student from Virginia no less, waiting long after "Funny Girl" was over to see Barbra leaving (she was picked up every night by Elliot Gould; remember him?). I even once managed to actually see her in "Funny Girl," so help me; she was glorious. The first time I saw her perform in person was in 1964 (I'm an old, old fart) at the Democratic Convention in Atlantic City. Anyway. As one who likes the way Babs does "You'll Never Walk Alone" on CD, I was prepared to be moved, but even so I was approximately overwhelmed. She's no slouch. And Ellen was wonderful. Her tone seemed exactly right, and after the swan dress she *deserved* that standing ovation. ;) At 07:50 PM 11/5/2001 -0800, Mark or Travis wrote: >Did anyone else catch the Emmys last night? - ----------------- So when you see a man who's broken / Pick him up and carry him. My dear friend Denny & I used to listen to it and sing along. Denny was a *very* enthusiastic singer. He used to sing to the animals when he worked at the Denver Zoo. I miss him terribly. We both loved Barbra. I wouldn't have known she was going to be on the Emmys if a friend hadn't called & told me. Rychard is a major Streisand fanatic. We had just been to see the restored 'Funny Girl' at the Cinerama in downtown Seattle on Saturday so he called me to tell me she was going to be on the show on Sunday. When she didn't accept her award for the 'Timeless' special, I thought maybe Rychard had gotten his wires crossed. But there she was at the very end of the show. They started by showing video of the wall in NYC that has the names of the missing on it. At first all you saw was the wall as Barbra started singing. I first heard 'You'll Never Walk Alone' when I saw the movie version of 'Carousel' on TV when I was a kid. I always loved it. It kinda gives me a goose bump feeling. Barbra had me in tears. I thought is was an excellent choice of material. Mark E. You'll Never Walk Alone music by Richard Rodgers lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II When you walk through a storm Hold your head up high And don't be afraid of the dark At the end of the storm Is a golden sky And the sweet silver song of a lark Walk on through the wind Walk on through the rain Though your dreams be tossed and blown Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart And you'll never walk alone You'll never walk alone. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Nov 2001 01:47:59 -0300 From: "Wally Kairuz" Subject: RE: That Nutty JMDL List (NJC) baby, stop buying houses every time there's a jonifest. that guy will resent it. i remember brad 4's!!!!!! where has he been?? wallyK, feeling the jmdl love tonight. bob murphy, where are you? - -----Mensaje original----- De: owner-joni@jmdl.com [mailto:owner-joni@jmdl.com]En nombre de Scott and Jody Enviado el: Martes, 06 de Noviembre de 2001 01:33 a.m. Para: joni@smoe.org Asunto: That Nutty JMDL List (NJC) Hi! I just can't get enough of that song. I also enjoyed playing it on bass that evening at jonifest.
