(njc) Wilfrid Owen - the British war poet - killed in action on this day 4th November in 1918. The bells were ringing on November 11, 1918, in Shrewsbury to celebrate the Armistice when the doorbell rang at his parent's home, bringing them the telegram telling them their son was dead. He was 25 years old. Strange Meeting It seemed that out of the battle I escaped Down some profound dull tunnel, long since scooped Through granites which titanic wars had groined. Yet also there encumbered sleepers groaned, Too fast in thought or death to be bestirred. Then, as I probed them, one sprang up, and stared With piteous recognition in fixed eyes, Lifting distressful hands as if to bless. And by his smile, I knew that sullen hall; By his dead smile I knew we stood in Hell. With a thousand pains that vision's face was grained; Yet no blood reached there from the upper ground, And no guns thumped, or down the flues made moan. <>I said, <> <>said the other, <> The hopelessness. Whatever hope is yours, Was my life also; I went hunting wild After the wildest beauty in the world, Which lies not calm in eyes, or braided hair, But mocks the steady running of the hour, And if it grieves, grieves richlier than here. For by my glee might many men have laughed, And of my weeping something had been left, Whch must die now. I mean the truth untold, The pity of war, the pity war distilled. Now men will go content with what we spoiled, Or, discontent, boil bloody, and be spilled. They will be swift with swiftness of the tigress, None will break ranks, though nations trek from progress. Courage was mine, and I had mystery, Wisdom was mine, and I had mastery; To miss the march of this retreating world Into vain citadels that are not walled. Then when much blood had clogged their chariot wheels I would go up and wash them from sweet wells, Even with truths that lie too deep for taint. I would have poured my spirit without stint But not through wounds; not on the cess of war. Foreheads of men have bled where no wounds were. <> ~Wilfrid Owen Kevin ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Nov 2001 14:48:28 +0200 From: "Ron Greer" Subject: X-rated joni [all fetishes now] njc hi and you've all missed.... The song is recognizable, but I cannot remember who's doing it...to the average ear, I SUPPOSE it COULD sound like early Joni, though I think it's kind of a cheesy tune! I just wanted to see if anyone else out there has been enjoying Cree Summer's 1999 CD "Street Faerie". Cree is Lisa Bonet's sister and has had a decent career on television and as a voice-over artist in animated TV nad movies. "Street Faerie" was/is her first CD and I've been listening to it for 2 years now and haven't come close to tiring of it. Produced by Lenny Kravitz (who's all over the CD, by the way), the album has both quietly pretty moments as well as some edgier material...versatile. I was moved to mention the disc to this list when I recently read that Cree grew up on an Indian reservation in Saskatchewan!!! Song samples are available at the usual on-line sources. On the mountain was a treasure Buried deep beneath the stone, And the valley-people swore They'd have it for their very own. Go ahead and hate your neighbor, Go ahead and cheat a friend. Do it in the name of Heaven, You can justify it in the end. There won't be any trumpets blowing Come the judgement day, On the bloody morning after.... One tin soldier rides away. So the people of the valley Sent a message up the hill, Asking for the buried treasure, Tons of gold for which they'd kill. Came an answer from the kingdom, "With our brothers we will share All the secrets of our mountain, All the riches buried there." Go ahead and hate your neighbor, Go ahead and cheat a friend. Do it in the name of Heaven, You can justify it in the end. There won't be any trumpets blowing Come the judgement day, On the bloody morning after.... One tin soldier rides away. Now the valley cried with anger, "Mount your horses! Draw your sword!" And they killed the mountain-people, So they won their just reward. Now they stood beside the treasure, On the mountain, dark and red. Turned the stone and looked beneath it... "Peace on Earth" was all it said. Go ahead and hate your neighbor, Go ahead and cheat a friend. Do it in the name of Heaven, You can justify it in the end. There won't be any trumpets blowing Come the judgement day, On the bloody morning after.... One tin soldier rides away. Go ahead and hate your neighbor, Go ahead and cheat a friend. The Austrian group Broadlahn amazingly weaves all of these elements together in a rich and beautiful blend of sound that is startlingly fresh and totally unique. It is like nothing else on earth - a really new kind of music. I really feel like it would be a good for the world if as many people as possible could hear this music and I'm sure that a lot of people here in JMDL would really like it and find it as exciting as I do. Broadlahn gave a performance last night in a little village about two hours' drive from Vienna and Ramona and I went to see them. We arrived quite early and spoke with some of the band members before the concert began. They are all very down-to-earth people. Most of them are Joni fans - really sincere ones! Reinhard Ziegerhofer, the bass player, told me a story about how he heard the new Both Sides Now for the first time last year when he was in Wisconsin and he totally loved it. He also told me that Josef Ofner (guitars, sitar, vocals) was probably the first Joni Mitchell fan in Austria! Mostly Broadlahn's music is very "up" and a lot of the songs give me a feeling of wanting to dance or like I'm flying over a beautiful landscape or standing beneath a star-studded sky. It's very expansive wonderful gorgeous music. All of the members of the band are excellent musicians and their live performances are as tight as their recordings in spite of the complexity of the songs. Four of the band members sing, they are always in tune with each other, and their harmonies are faultless and beautiful. The band members are: Ernst Huber - guitar, accordion, flute, vocals and comedy between songs Reinhard Ziegerhofer - bass guitar and concert bass (he actually has four different basses - the concert bass, a six-string bass, a fretless bass and a normal electric bass) Franz Schmuck - drums, percussion, marimba, keyboard, vocals Philipp Rottensteiner - mandoline, acoustic guitar, keyboard, vocals Reinhard Grube - saxophone, clarinet, keyboard Josef Ofner - vocals, acoustic guitar, sitar, 12-string guitar, electric guitar Broadlahn has a web site at: http://www.broadlahn.at/ From there, besides seeing their photos, you can find a link to a page from which it's possible to order their music. If you are new to their music, I highly recommend their third CD - Almrauschen im Weltempfaenger, or their latest CD - Broadlahn LIVE mit Bodo Hell und Otto Lechner (although this one has a lot of talking in German between the songs, it shows how good they sound live). My favorite CD is their 2nd one (it has a green cover), but I have not been able to find it anywhere online. Vigoda considers the music to be eclectic rock bnb roll, described as btoo cool for words,b by The Statebs Michael Miller. As a developing musician, she trained at a classical conservatory. bI used to fear and dread playing,b she says. Then she discovered the free-flowing, wired sound of the electric violin.
