Sounds like "the bio has landed" from US orders to Amazon.co.uk OK - but I'd also encourage y'all to order from the Helter Skelter bookshop - I have nothing to do with the shop myself, other than being a regular visitor, but as a Londoner, I would love to see this specialist contemporary music bookshop survive and prosper. It's been on Denmark Street for a couple of years now, (for those who don't know, Denmark Street, off Charing Cross Road, used to be known as the 'Tin Pan Alley of London' and today is almost totally guitar/music shops. Helter Skelter is opposite Andy's and the 12 Bar Club. website: http://www.skelter.demon.co.uk e-mail : helter@skelter.demon.co.uk They have a great selection of contemporary music books - this year I've also read the Clinton Heylin's bio of Sandy Denny, 'No More Sad Refraims', Colin Harper's bio of Bert Jansch, 'Dazzling Stranger' and David Hajdu's 'Positively 4th Street - the lives and times of Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Mimi Baez Farina and Richard Farina', and have been temped to buy several others, including the James Taylor bio. Talking of Sandy Denny, recently there's been an interesting thread on the Sandy list sparked off by a list member who was concerned over his wife's lack of self-esteem. Sandy suffered badly from this, as a quote from Fairport's Dave Pegg in Karen O'Brien's biography indicates: >"[Sandy] just didn't know how good she was, really. > She never thought she sang well, and she never > thought much of her songs. We all loved them. She'd > go, 'Oh, you all love Joni Mitchell. She's much better > than me'. We'd go, 'No, Sandy. You're as good as she > is.' But [there was] this dreadful insecurity - about > everything. to which the Sandy list-member replied: >Re Joni Mitchell: Another long-term fave, 'Blue' has >to be one of the world's best statements of the human >condition. to which I replied: According to Karen O'Brien >"Much of Denny's own material could be interpreted >as biographical, and she had referred to 'Blue' in her >song 'Makes Me Think of You' which was only ever >recorded as a demo. The song is shot through with >Denny's sadness at her deteriorating marriage to >Trevor Lucas: > ....The albums strewn without their clothes > Gather dust among the grooves > The only one I play is 'Blue' > It makes me think of you.... > Karen also mentions the 1968 Festival of Contemporary Song at the Royal Festival Hall when Joni appeared with Fairport Convention, Jackson C Frank, and Al Stewart. I would love to hear from anyone who can remember that. The late lamented Jackson C Frank's one and only album has been a favourite of mine since my schooldays. I also didn't know that Joni had toured the UK with The Incredible String Band. Anyone see any of those shows? I am very curious about the opinions of all those who do not share my point of view (provided that they are sensible people who know what they are talking about). I think I have learned a lot from many posts I have seen in this list. I was deeply touched by Kakki's message: >I will say that I am very saddened by the anti-American sentiment that >I've seen revealed in a lot of the European press since Sept. 11th. I >think we always had a vague idea that the Euros looked down on us a >bit, but had no idea how deep the hostility runs. I am willing to reconsider how we are >viewed by the world and the reasons why and I only hope that the >Europeans would also try to reconsider us on some things, too. In general, I don't like generalising (I am a Groucho Marxist too), also because Europe is much less a single entity than you may think in the US. Speaking about *Europeans* might be useless. Conversely, it is difficult to me to understand the beautiful force that binds Americans (oops, I generalised!) together. This compactness in hard times is probably your major strenght, at least from my *European* point of view. When I was much younger, I used to be "anti-American". Getting older (but alas not much wiser) I realized that this is a stupid attitude. I don't agree (to put it mildly) with many decisions taken by US governments over the years, and I have seen that many of you do not agree with them as well. I have read in another post that an English woman stupidly attacked Kakki without any reason, as if she were responsible for any decision taken by the US president. I am *European*, but hopefully I am not stupid, and I wish not to be confused with people like that. I know that after September 11th you probably feel precipitated in a nightmare. I am scared too and I am not much optimistic about the future. If something good can come from this horrendous situation, maybe it is this necessity to understand what happens outside the borders of our countries (no matter how wide they are). I hope it was not too long or tedious as a first post. By the way, how can I get a copy of Joni's Sanremo act? ''Through the years Lauras albums have reflected various musical explorations from simple, down-home singing, to wild orchestrations resembling abstract art. Robert Hilburn of The Los Angeles Times, wrote about Laura, Her contributions have paved the way for the rise of the urban female singer-songwriter. And Jon Pareles amplified this in The New York Times: If not for Laura Nyro the music of Rickie Lee Jones, Joni Mitchell, and Teena Marie might have been very different. When she released her first album in 1966, Nyro was a nineteen-year old who linked high flown poetry to the ecstatic emotions of soul music, and her singing mixed the pure tones of a soprano with the throbs and swoops of gospel and jazz. The music she made, noted Concerts East magazine, was a building block for an important group of contemporary artists, particularly in the way they cross- bred jazz, R&B, and pop, while poetically exploring the range of their emotions. Her voice has been described as a blues soprano, a rich, charcoal-smudged alto, a soul singer who soars - she can make you feel it deep down. Daily Variety wrote, Nyro still has an astonishing voice, a kind of melting, pure-toned soprano, loaded with feeling, that seems drawn in equal measure from some private inner cathedral, and the doo-wop streets of her youth. '' dear laura, you, joni and rickie have taught me all i will ever learn and know. i wish i could been a better student. i love you, laura. wallyK ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Oct 2001 12:45:59 -0700 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: Re: IRA (NJC) Kakki wrote "I will say that I am very saddened by the anti-American sentiment that I've seen revealed in a lot of the European press since Sept. 11th...I am willing to reconsider how we are viewed by the world and the reasons why" I think it is not neccessarily the people of the US (though there is that phrase the ugly American that has been around for awhile & does have some truth to it) but US foreigh policy that has created this sentiment. Either way, how England (Britain?) is portrayed doesn't bother me (my being Welsh, for what it's worth), and certainly does not lead to my being anti-American in any way. There were a whole bunch of similar incidents that all happened here on Tuesday, in govt' offices and, if I'm not mistaken, in private business as well. We still don't have the lab results back but I've been nagging the public health guy about it (I hate doing that because I know how busy they are). The ironic thing is that the Public Health Lab that does the testing is part of my ministry - but we still don't know! I even e-mailed the manager over at the lab to ask him it he could check to see if our sample had been tested yet - that was just a bit before I left work. I hate doing that kind of thing because I really can't stand queue-jumping and I figure my staff shouldn't get treated any different than any member of the public with a similar issue. I also know that there were a whole bunch of these things that happened here on Tuesday and the cops and the fire dept were run ragged. I learned after the fact that there is an actual team from public health who are supposed to show up when an incident of this kind happens, to talk to teh people who contacted the stuff and to counsel anyone who's really worried and upset about it. That didn't happen in our office. I have to admit, I'm completely convinced it's all a hoax and, even though I was one of the people who touched the stuff (and I even managed to inhale some of it when I breathed in when another person was moving things around), I'm not really worried - but I have two clerical staff who ARE really worried. One of them comes from Sri Lanka to being with and I'm sure she went through a lot there. She also just lost her mother recently and just isn't in the greatest of health mentally or physically right now. The other one is a young single mother of 4-yr old twin girls and she's not even permanent stafff - she's a temp and doesn't get benefits or anything like the rest of my staff. If I don't get some word tomorrow, I'm going to be really pissed! The other weird thing that happened is that Wednesday morning, after I took my dog for her 6 a.m. walk, Inoticed an open briefcase sitting on my driveway between my car and the garage door. It hadn't been there the night before and I have no idea where it came from! It was open and it was full of tools like screwdrivers and so on. I called the cops who came and took a report and checked to see if it looked as if someone had tried to break into the house (I had already had a look around and there's no sign of any of that.) I've had more dealings with the police in the last week than I've ever had in my life and it's not something I care to do too often! At least the cop who came to my house was really cute - looked kind of like Benjamin Bratt would have looked as a teenager - a really YOUNG cop! Laurent, you're in France, aren't you? It's kind of funny how the "swear words" in Quebec French all relate to church things - things like "Tabarnac'!" (Tabernacle); "Sacrament!" (same word in English) "Hostie!" (which means "host" as in Holy communion wafers) and "Bapteme!" which means Baptism. Hardly anything an Anglophone would think of as "bad" language - in English, our swear words seem to be mostly the Anglo-Saxon (a conquered race, who therefore spoke an "inferior" language) words for body parts or bodily functions. Anyway, it seems to me that Francais de France French swearing is more like the English swearing, i.e., body parts or functions - maybe the French weren't as repressed by religion as the Quebecois were. While I had remained admittedly skeptical about this young man because of the blistering hype surrounding the last Whiskeytown record, I have now been happily converted. "Gold" is definitely a mixed bag. But some of the songs are so breathtakingly beautiful ("Wild Flowers" and "When the Stars Go Blue") that its easy to forgive him for his rambling and reckless rock star demeanour (whether it is put on or true, doesn't matter with songwriting this good). This is a traveling record and you can feel his journey from a cramped New York apartment to spaced out and spacey LA. For the bit of Joni content, it reminds me of "Blue" in that way - a traveler's paean to California's glistening sunsets which serve as a backdrop to various reflections on love ("Goodnight Hollywood Boulevard" and "La Cienega Just Smiled"). All of you fans of 70's California country-rock should give this guy a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Speaking about >*Europeans* might be useless. Yes, I don't throw them all into one bag by any means. I have just read some European, mostly British, opinion writers, that seemed very contemptuous of the U.S. I realize that that doesn't mean any Brit or Europeean feels the same way. I guess I think of how some of the American opinion writers influence people in the U.S. and when you hear the same thing coming from them over and over, after awhile it can become "truth" to people, even if it was originally based on pure speculation or opinion or myth. >Conversely, it is difficult to me to understand the >beautiful force that binds Americans (oops, I >generalised!) together. Yes, that is true. It's so difficult here sometimes to reach a consensus or to do what is wise. We are so diverse and our politicians or government decision-makers, sometimes to please everyone (and get votes), make decisions that are either ineffectual or ultimately harmful to us. I think most Americans have a pretty good idea of why we are having problems now in the middle east, but the situation is so complex, that I don't think we quite know how to fix it. Also, people in the U.S. are split in their positions on many of the burning Mid-East issues. They are not split along political parties lines, either, so it is complicated. I do think that the governments of some of the countries there which are having so many problems need to take a good look at themselves, too. They need to assess their own positions on human rights, justice, fairness, diplomacy and terrorism. I'm not denying that the U.S. has in some ways exacerbated the problems there, but they cannot assume the U.S. alone will always be convenient to be blamed or to help get them out of their problems. > I have read in another post that an English > woman stupidly attacked Kakki without any reason, as >if she were responsible for any decision taken by the US >president. I am *European*, but hopefully I am not >stupid, and I wish not to be confused with people > like that. Oh no, I would not do that! And I'd have to say that the U.S. has it's own share of jerks here, too, who have probably been just as insulting and inappropriate with people from other countries! Thanks so much again, Mario. My husband and I were treated to an all expense-paid trip to Ocean City, Maryland last week (hence my being behind on posts). Being unemployed at the moment, it was a much needed retreat. (boy, do I miss spending money!) All joking aside, we all were able to watch a sunrise on the ocean one of the mornings. It was the most glorious things I have ever seen. I realized the power which resides in a sunrise, a sunset, or the mighty crashing of the waves. Until Bin Laden can stop those, he has no power over me. He is insignificant in the big scheme of things. I encourage everyone to go and find the majesty of nature. The day we arrived in Ocean City, we heard the news that the bombing had begun as well as the Anthrax attacks. Whenever I would start to worry, I would go the balcony, sit and watch the waves magnificently crash against the shore. They seemed to wash away my fears and worries. I must now buy a house by the ocean! I haven't pulled out my Turbulent Indigo CD for quite a while. It's an absolutely fantastic CD. A friend's mother (who also became my friend) was prescribed Lithium back in the 70's for her depression. I came over one day to visit her and was blown away by the change in her personality. She was acting like she was living in slow motion. I have suffered from depression all of my life, but after seeing her and another ex-schoolmate on Thorazine, I swore that I would never take any pills. Even back then, I felt that they would be extremely bad for me personally. After reading your post, I now know that I was not wrong, at least for myself. It's hard to fight depression cold turkey, but I've done it for many years. One of the tricks I have recently learned is to drink a cup of coffee, especially after a bad night. For some reason, the chemicals in the brain go wacky and I have found that coffee helps my brain get back into gear. I've never admitted that I suffer from depression. I've seen how people are treated in the workplace when they admit a vulnerability such as depression or any type of dependency. They are treated like damaged goods and it is done in such a sneaky way, it's hard to prove. Now that I am no longer in the workplace, I can finally come to honest terms with what I have hidden for years. You guys are the first people I've admitted this to because you are my Jonilista family!
