It will pass. From my own experience, doing anyhting about it, except maybe talking about my feelings, didn't work. It took time and it passed. It will run it's course and you will come out of it and usally better for it. For me, I always seem to have a new insight when i leave a depression behind. I have not ever been able to cajole my way out of it. Phyliss Ward wrote: > Since September 11th I've been in a state of depression in varying > degrees. My parents-in-law arrived on 11 Sept. for a two-week visit, and then I had another visitor just after they left, so I was not able to allow myself to really grieve as deeply as I might have otherwise until a week ago Monday. Since 11 Sept., I haven't been able to sleep very well at all - I wake up really early in the morning (before sunrise) with a sense of dread that something else terrible has happened - as if being awake could prevent anything at all. The other night I was drifting off to sleep around 11:30 p.m. and a jet flew low over our house (we live near the airport, but are not normally in the flight path). I was startled out of sleep exclaiming "Oh, my god! Oh my god!" because I thought the jet was crashing. I work in probably the largest/tallest office complexes in Vienna with people who come from all over the world. Although I know security is good here, I feel a sense of unease having to be here every day. I'm sure some of the people I pass in the hallways are unhappy about what is going on now in Afghanistan. Part of me would really like to just be with all my sisters in California right now and I treasure every moment I can spend with my family at my home. It is very hard to come in to work every day. I would love to just gather my family around me and keep us all safe in our nest until this is all over. This was like a broadside accident to the USA - "chaos to the order - random things you can't prevent" - and I think part of the depression stems from being angry at being confronted with being helpless to control very shocking outside events. If everything is fine in life, then we have an illusion of being in control. This event affects us personally because until now we had the illusion that the USA was a safe place to be. What happened was not in our collective imagination until it happened. I grieved very seriously all last week. I still burst into tears at odd moments. I don't know when I will feel better again, but I think it helps to just accept that this is the way I feel. I'm having a hard time putting one foot in front of the other to get any task done, so I have let go of some outside obligations that just seem too much right now and I have a sense of relief. I have been doing serious low-carb for about the last two years, but my body is craving things like lentil soup and mashed potatoes and toast with Marmite and noodles with butter and soy sauce, and I've just decided that it would make me feel better to indulge these cravings for a couple of weeks. I need to take care of me. I think it's okay to do that. Just let yourself rest, Phyliss. It's okay to take care of yourself now. I have all the symptoms of a major depressive episode, although I feel more anxious than sad. Can't sleep, can't concentrate, can't enjoy anything, headaches, backaches, stomachaches. My husband told me I'm taking all this stuff worse than anyone he knows. I think I was more vulnerable because I was in a state of extreme stress even before Sept. 11. Last night, sleepless as usual, I tried to tell myself that I just have to develop some plain old courage. Our generation in the US hasn't really had to develop much physical courage, not in the way that my our parents did who perhaps had to deal directly with war (my husband's family tree has empty branches thanks to the death camps). I'm starting to think that it's as much a moral as a psychological issue. Not that it's immoral to be depressed, but that thinking about one's duty is more conducive to recovery than thinking about one's feelings. Of course, I could be wrong!! > > Since September 11th I've been in a state of depression in varying > degrees... > I would share and see if anyone has any words of wisdom that might help > those of us that are experiencing this out of it. Of course, I bought it immediately because it has a cover of "Blue Motel Room" on it. I ended up buying it through CDQuest.com, but in the meantime I struck up an e-mail conversation with Lorraine. When I told her of my passion/obsession with Joni covers, she said she had also recorded "A Case of You" (inspired by Joni's remake on BSN) but never released it. She sent me a CD of her take on ACOY, and man is it sweet. It's what Joni SHOULD HAVE DONE on BSN instead of smothering it with the oppressive orchestration. Anyway, that's not my point...to finish the story, to return the favor, I made Lorraine a nice compilation of jazz vocal Joni covers. This is the message I just received from her: "I got your CD package today what a treat! Great listening to all those different visions of tunes that have meant so much over the years. It was cool to hear Barangrill- that album kept me sane when I was having hard times as a teen/musician stuck in Milwaukee for about a year of my life....yikes what torture for a CA hippie during the early 70's! Since then I've thought about doing something with that one or with "Electricity" off the same album. Well anyway-I'm blathering and I really have to get ready to go sing tonight. Will include Help Me and Twisted in the set list tonight....and raise a toast to South Carolina and its inhabitants who have extremely good taste." Me again: Those of you who love female torch singers would enjoy "Diva's Diversion". Besides the 7:05 (!!)smokin' take on Blue Motel Room she does a couple other standards and an original or two as well. You can check out soundbites for free at her website:(http://www.gervaismusic.com/pages/discog.html) And you can order her CD from: http://www.theorchard.com/ (It appears as though CD Quest is no longer stocking it! :~( ) Or email her and order it from her directly...you can get an autographed copy, and she's a very nice correspondent as well. I'll add Lorraine onto my "brush with greatness" list! :~) And keep your eyes open; she tours the west coast and as you can see generally always does some Joni in her set. NYers, anyone else get this? it was helpful and informative. here's what's currently working for me: YOGA. calming, life-affirming, peaceful. i mean it. this is the single most helpful thing i can do for myself after 9/11 and i've been preaching it like a yoga fool to all my friends. try it, i think it is really a good thing. COOKING. i'm barely eating, but for some reason the acts of shopping and following recipes are soothing and again, life-affirming. i'm trying to make healthy, beautiful dishes -- soups, breads, etc. BEING KIND. to myself, to the ones i love, but also: to people on the street. i'm trying to say thank you and have a good day and are you all right -- and these days, i mean them. i try to look people in the eye. i need contact with others, i need to know we are all in this together. STUPID COMEDIES. video rentals, TV shows. sometimes a few laughs can go a long way these days. READING. george eliot's "middlemarch" is my subway book these days. and when my anxiety (oh, good lord, taking the subway is such a trial for me) rises almost unbearably i slow down and make myself read those long, convoluted victorian sentences -- sometimes twice, ten, fifteen times before they penetrate into my understanding. and it's nice to contemplate the vagaries and struggles of a small English country town these days. i started it 9/12 and i promised myself that by "the end" i'd be feeling better. anyway, these suggestions are offered in a spirit of help and healing. they really have worked for me (at times) -- i'm interested if anyone else has ideas. good luck, phyllis. and all of us! - -- emily ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Oct 2001 07:59:12 -0700 From: Steve Dulson Subject: Re: Zep/Yep (njc) Darice wrote: >At Last, we have found a show we both were at!!!!! >I was wearing a purple dress, knee-length with a ruffled neck line from >a famous show in Hollywood... and I took the city bus from UCLA to the show. (Please note: On the recommendation of my legal advisor I point out that the above is a joke and does not imply any past or present drug use on the part of either the author, his legal advisor or Darice.) This would free my evenings and weekends up so I can continue to rediscover how much I enjoy playing and singing. So far, my experience of Athens is that it is a big music town, people seem friendly and much more laid back, and as a consequence, seem to have more appreciation of music and more time/energy to actually enjoy it. Traffic is never an issue here whereas in Atlanta, I would always dread going anywhere between 4-7 pm, and quite honestly, people just don't care much about anything. I was so burned out in Atlanta, I didn't even enjoy playing anymore except on a rare occasion, and just the whole vibe was wrong. Noone took me seriously at all and it was so disheartening. I'm looking forward to seeing what is in store for me here in Athens. It can only be good. Thanks for the well wishes! I don't know what I'd do without this wonderful community!
