John Mc Laughlin is from the U.K. He was discovered by Miles Davis and became Miles' guitarist in 1970 at age 20 (or so)! He ran the gamut from electric jazz/fusion (Mahavishnu Orchestra in early 70's), to Indian/jazz music (Shakti in mid 70's) to classical/jazz (Mediterranean Concerto in the 80's) to .....you name it. I'm so glad he re-formed Shakti 2-3 years ago with the incredible Zakir Hussain on tablas, I always thought this was his best work. He's one of the best jazz guitarist alive, although sometimes a little too intellectual and lacking in emotion (with all due respect). Lotus Feet is a beautiful soft piece with strange harmonies. If that sounds interesting I'll be happy to burn you some stuff. Hard to believe that another month is already upon us...why,it won't be long before boys and girls are asleep in their beds, whilst visions of Volume #25 dance in their heads! But for here and now, it's Volume 22 that's in the spotlight, and what a collection it is...one of the best in the series, in my own incredibly biased opinion. First, a salute to those who helped me bring it to you: Stephen E. in NYC Monica in Holland Beth Yeshaya (artist's contribution!) Sgt. Rock aka Bill Pearson in the UK Let's take a closer look, shall we? Joni is represented in a grand style with the following selections: 1. Yale Whiffenpoofs of 1972 - I Don't Know Where I Stand: OK, I admit I was expecting this to be cheesy as hell but it's very pretty. From a private LP produced by the college singing group. 2. Aerial Landscapes - Both Sides Now: This one has sentimental value for me as it was the first one I ever entered in the covers database. It is record #1, and now we're almost up to 800 covers! :~P 3. Sylvia McNeill - Chelsea Morning: I'm a sucker for Chelsea Morning always, and this is a nice pseudo-soul version, it sounds like it could've come from the Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack. 4. Michael Stanbury & The Jubilee Singers - The Circle Game: From a CBC collection of Canadian TV stars who made a record. Dated but fun. 5. Jane Monheit - A Case of You: Herein starts a run of REALLY nice femvox covers! This one from Jane's 2001 release, a fresh sounding version of a classic that I never get tired of hearing. 6. Christine Sullivan - I Think I Understand: The ONLY version of this beautiful song I've been able to find! Hard to believe that nobody else has been drawn to record this gem, and I had to send off to the land down under to get THIS one! 7. Christine Sullivan - from the same CD (which Ms. Sullivan autographed for me!), and also very nice. And yes I know that Joni didn't write it, so shoot me. 8. Johanne Blouin - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines: Another nice jazz vocal from Mingus, nice to know that this record has influenced so many jazz singers! 9. Johanne Blouin - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: see above! 10. Lydia van Dam - Both Sides Now: Probably the true measure of her talent is that she makes this one her own. Breathtakingly beautiful...even Les had to ask "Who is THIS?" when we played it at the church getting it ready for performers. 11. Beth Yeshaya - A Case of You: Another 2001 recording from another talented young new voice. Beth recorded this CD "live in the studio"...she used a live band and had an audience so the songs would have the energy of a live take, and it doesn't disappoint. 12. James Vincent - I Don't Know Where I Stand: Don't know much about this one, except the record is pretty rare. It has a Lemon Pipers "Green Tambourine" feel to it. 13. The Woodstock Singers - The Circle Game: You'd think that with that name, they'd have done Woodstock! The Woodstock Singers were a group of singing Jesuits, that's about all I know about them. 14. Anni Clark - Conversation: Can't say enough about this great cover! Better than Joni's version in that it really builds up the song, starting with the guitar and adding a soft bass and congas, and Anni's vocal makes it, well, conversational. 15. Percy Faith - Both Sides Now: About what you'd expect from the king of 60's "lite pop", with some backing vocals. He also does BYT which will be upcoming in 2002. 16. Marti Pellow - River: VERY lucky to have snagged this one...Marti is the lead singer for Wet Wet Wet, and was doing a radio show, when he chose River as a warm-up/soundcheck song. Sweet!! Big thanks to "Sarge" for this one! 17. Frank Stallone - A Case of You: What to make of this one? Features Van Dyke Parks and produced by Harry Nilsson. You can definitely hear Harry's touch, nice pop sensibility which rescues Rocky's bro from cheese country, no to be confused with Wisconsin. 18/19; The Travelers - Cactus Tree/Both Sides Now: We close Volume 22 the same way we opened it, with a college vocal group doing Joni songs on a very obscure and hard to find record. This time 'round it's The Travelers from Mt. Vernon Junior College, who do some folk songs, including a rare version of Cactus Tree! I also wonder why this one has been so ignored in Joni's song base...maybe the lyrics make it more personal to Joni, I dunno. So there it is, submitted for your approval. I'll be back to tell you how you can get a free copy!! We had several celebrity spottings there: Peter Buck of REM came in once, everyone was too intimidated to go talk to him, so I finally asked him if he needed help. He didn't. Patti Smith came in and sat quietly in the book section for about an hour, reading poetry. She was pleasant when approached, but would only talk about Dylan's new album! One of the Baldwin brothers (I forget which one) came in and seemed intent on making sure the entire store knew who he was. We also had bands come in fairly often to play live in the store or sign cd's. Most of these were up and coming bands, not too famous. Lots of bands would do 'walk throughs'-show up at the store unannounced with a record label rep and hang out for a few minutes with the staff in the backroom. I met They Might Be Giants, Rusted Root, Kid Rock (he was a total asshole), Evan Dando of the Lemonheads, the Kronos Quartet, Big Head Todd & the Monsters, Jonatha Brooke (I had no idea who she was, and thought her name was a typo-actually Jonathan Brooks) , and many others I can't recall through these visits. I also knew a guy who worked security at U-M stadium. One day he was told not to let anyone come into the broadcast booth, and was verbally assaulted by an irate Candace Bergen when he woulden't let her in! So Ann Arbor does get the occasional celeb spotting! - ------------- RE: That is so cool. Too bad more celebs don't live in Ann Arbor. By Lara Smith LONDON (Reuters) - Some people will do anything to get into the record books -- eat cockroaches, catapult coins or just sit around and navel-gaze. Australian Graham Barker has extracted his own belly button fluff every day since 1984, collecting a world record 0.54 ounces. His collection, perfectly preserved and cataloged, is just one of the weird and wonderful feats recorded in the 2002 edition of Guinness World Records, published on Friday. "Some people gaze into their navel for inspiration. I look into mine and see navel fluff," said Barker, whose ambition is to collect enough navel pickings to stuff a pillow. Briton Ken Edwards, a former rat-catcher and part-time entertainer, made it into the record book after eating 36 medium-sized cockroaches in one minute on March 5, 2001. As part of his stage act he also stuffs 47 rats down a pair of pantyhose -- while wearing them. Then there is Monte Pierce, who can catapult a coin just under 12 feet with his ear -- the world record for the furthest coin propulsion by an earlobe. Pierce, who started yanking his ears as a child, can also cover his eyes with his lobes and pull them down under his chin. Other bizarre record-breaking feats include the loudest burp, by Briton Paul Hunn, which registered 118.1 decibels -- comparable to a plane taking off, according to the record book. Sooty was crowned the most romantic guinea pig after fathering 43 babies during a single night of passion with 24 partners in December 2000. British actor Vic Gallucci holds the record for most appearances as a television extra. Since 1989 he has appeared 819 times as Detective Constable Tom Baker in police TV drama The Bill. He has yet to speak a line. The first is a collection of photos from pre-2001 Jonifests. The second is a photo tribute to the people of New York and Washington using some splendid photos garnered from the internet. The files are in .WMV form i.e. Windows Media Files so they will ideally play on Windows Media Player or a suitable alternative; Irfanview etc. To download just go to Yahoo Groups at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/JoniMitchellfans then click on files on the left hand side then click on the Jonifest folder then right click and save as.. The files are compressed so you will need Winzip or a suitable decompressor. If you are not a member of Yahoo Groups you will have to join, but this is easy. I have been a member for a year and had no trouble with them. The sound is in glorious lo-fi, but you may recognize the tunes. I hope you like them. Kevin P.S. I'm just struggling with my emotions on this subject, like everyone else, and felt I could share them with all of you. Marianne Wrote: No offense to all those loving people out there (you) who are sporting American Flags at this time, but the American flag doesn't do it for me. . .it speaks to one nation as if it is the most important. "All of it is important or none of it is." Marianne, you have said (and beautifully I might add), exactly what I've been trying to convey to friends since the events of the eleventh of September. At this point, I think most of my friends think I'm some sort of lunatic. I'm not sure if it's the old hippy in me coming out, or what, but I too, can't help but look at this from a more global perspective. As far as I'm concerned, the terrorism that occurred on the eleventh, was a crime against humanity, not just the United States. From what I remember hearing, over 1,000 of 5,000+ missing at the WTC are non-US citizens. Are their deaths any less important because they aren't US citizens? Of course not, but with all this emphasis on the US, I can't help but wonder how the families of those non-US citizens feel. Surely, there must be a more universal symbol that can be used at this time to show support for everyone impacted by this event. Please don't misunderstand my intentions here. I love the United States, and feel extremely blessed to live here. I'm also extremely proud of how our country has pulled together during this whole event, and I'm speechless in the face of the heroics that have occurred. I went to a Chicago Cubs game on Thursday night (their first home game since the eleventh), and waved my American flag, and cried like a baby during America the Beautiful, and the National Anthem, just like everyone else in the stands. It was truly a very touching and inspirational moment - and not one I will ever forget. I just wish it was a feeling that the rest of the world could participate in. A part of this whole thing has such a superiority feel to it. "God Bless America" is one of the hot phrases going around, which is fine, but personally, I think we're pretty damned blessed already! What's wrong with "God Bless the World"? I wonder how different our collective reactions would be if this tragedy occurred in another part of the world. I'm sure we would still be stunned, and probably send tons of aid, but I'm also convinced that if it had happened elsewhere, we wouldn't be nearly as freaked out. Why does it have to happen to US citizens in order for us to be moved as a nation? I read the other day that they are estimating that close to 6 million people in Africa could die of AIDS within the next decade. 6 million!!! That's 1,000 times the devastion of that occurred at the WTC. Why is it we can find billions of dollars when there is a war involved, but we can't find the money to send the necessary medications and supplies to prevent the deaths of 6 million Africans? Maybe I suffer from Woody Allen Syndrome - I can't be completely happy, knowing there is somebody else out there suffering - or maybe I'm just a dim-witted idealist. However, I realize that I was born here by chance, and that doesn't make me better than the rest of the world... just a whole lot luckier. Peace! Hi, all, You folks have been so kind, helpful and encyclopedic (especially one of you - -- you know who you are), I feel emboldened to ask some more "he watches too much TV" questions: (1) Three car commercials (I suppose since all cars look alike -- to me, anyway -- they have to use decent music to distinguish the brands): (a) a Saab commercial with a jazzy female pop/folk vocal -- sorry I can't be more exact, but maybe somone out there will know the commercial and the artist; (b) A VW Cabrio ad that aired a lot some time back and seems to have been brought back has a bunch of kids driving in the moonlight to a party; when they get there, the party seems too loud and drunken, so they just drive away to enjoy the night; anyway, there's a folky male vocalist I don't recognize...(c) Don't even know the make of the car this time, but this commercial features genXers again, driving (in some scenes) in a tunnel, with a catchy start-and-stop piece that's a mix of hiphop, big band (lots of horns) and I don't know what -- hard to classify. I think the song is either a current or very recent hit, because I still hear it on the street from time to time. Sorry for being so vague -- I should take better notes when I'm watching TV. Oh, yeah, navel gazing: reading about lint, and then coincidentally receiving a post (that I forwarded here) about a guy in the UK who collects navel lint (his own, I believe) got me looking down at my own navel, which is hard to miss by virtue of its being an outie (technically, an umbilical hernia -- popped out like a turkey thermometer about twenty years ago for no particular reason, didn't hurt, so I left it alone.) (Anyone see the movie eXistenZ, dir. by Cronenburg? A friend of mine did the prostetics, and based the virtual reality jack-in device on my belly button: I'm a star!!) (Idea for a movie: openly gay guy with an umbilical hernia -- call it "Outy" -- that's as far as I've gotten. My sister asked me what kind of car he would drive... It runs in the family.) Anyway, any other outies among the jmdlers? People (well, *some* people) ask "Are you an innie or an outie?", but to tell the truth, I've never ever met another outie. Just curious. More serious question: What isp would y'all suggest for someone with a five-year-old computer and no money? I've run into trouble with the largest isp (you know who), although it finally got partially corrected today after ruining the end of September for me financially. I understand "hotmail" is free.. are there others? I'd appreciate any recommendations.
