OK, from a purely technical point of view, this seems to be a problem either with the application.cfm file, which has either been modified to exclude the query statement, or has been removed from the root directory of the JMDL subdirectory structure so it can't be found; or it's that the query statement within the main file - *.cfm - (if said query statement is not generic to the JMDL site) has been corrupted. More likely it's a problem with the host server, and there's nothing Les or anyone else can do, until the owners of the server sort things out. Or it could be that I've been programming too much in Cold Fusion lately, and I need to find a life - take your pick! Hell P.S. You ask why? Well, the main reason is I have little time. But, I have been moved by many of you, many a time. So I wanted to say thanks. Thanks for the websites of some great new musicians, many of you are jmdl folks. Thanks for sharing your Jonifests, they sound so fun and interesting. I would be embarrassed to show up as I have no musical talent except maybe dancing. Thanks for sharing your grief at this almost surreal time in our lives. And thanks for all the interesting websites posted. My knowledge of the world has grown immensely. I think for the women of today, commradery is hard to find. We are so busy with our families and work, it's hard to find friends that share your common interests. So, that brings me to Joni. When I was 14 I met a girl who had a hippy type family. I had come from an uptight, catholic family, so this was really different from what I was used to. And, I loved it. Her parents had a guitar group and everyone would sit around and sing folk songs. I thought this was so cool. One day, they played Court and Spark on the record player. I was hooked. From that day on, I saved all my money and bought all the Joni Mitchell that was out. I listened to Joni night and day. It got me through puberty. Any man who has ever loved me, probably thinks of me when they hear Joni. I fell in love with a man named Sam because he played Joni the first time I went to his house. Joni has been through all of my relationships, my ups and downs, the birth of my children etc. In 1998 I had the amazing privilege of seeing Joni live with Bob Dylan and Van Morrison. I cried through the entire show. The funny thing is I thought it was only me. I hadn't met anyone who loved Joni as much as me. Until now. So thanks for being there. It is very cool. My top ten list for the island: 1) Court and Spark--Joni 2) Heijra--Joni 3) Turbulent Indigo--Joni 4) Live @ Luther College--Dave Matthews 5) #1--The Beatles 6) Harvest--Neil Young 7) When I Woke--Rusted Root 8) Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits--Bob 9) American Beauty--Grateful Dead 10) Running on Empty--Jackson Browne So, that's it for now......peace....Julie ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Sep 2001 18:37:02 +0100 From: "joe farrell" Subject: digest 447 njc Thanks a million to Cindy, Bill, and Lori for all your help with the missing edition of digest 447. I have just returned from a night in the local hospital, diagnosed with a case of total exhaustion. And I need to get into bed and take my medication and rest. After "sleeping" as it were last night I could nit get these words of Anne Sandstrom to me out of my head: "Selfishly, I want something for this. Firemen have their helmets. Veterans have their flags. Heroes have their monuments. I want to help bring this JMDL community back together. Please! That's my monument. That's my work." I knew just not soon enough from the beginning that I had reacted to totally false and bogus accusations too quickly. And I was caught in the pain from those false accusation. Given that I was physically and emotionally stretched so thin, maybe that is why I reacted so hastily, and boxed myself in.. which I almost instantly regretted. And I knew that any change of mind on my part would open me up to the ridicule of those who substitute sarcasm for conversation and high five each other for their latest insulting put-downs. I am not a drama queen, although this episode won't make me look far from it. I am a person who was very, very hurt for reasons too personal to reveal here by words thrown at me that were just plain wrong and hurtful. I am embarrassed for my too fast emotional response on Wednesday and how foolish I look three days later reversing it. But if Joni can put out "Dancing Clown" and come back and release more albums and tour again, then like Joni I can come back from my own mistakes. Anne's words above weighed most heavily on me. Whether I am on this list or not is really irrelevant. But then I had to balance Anne's words to me with the fact that we have lost Steve Dulson, Michael Paz, Roberto Hollitson, and Jenaya Dawes at least those four in recent time. And Marcel. That is five people very key to this community. People come and go but that is a lot of loss. Is it the stress of recent events? If it is, we must do better. We weathered the shootings at Columbine with much emotion in the JMDL and without this type of decimation of our JMDL membership. We managed the bombing of Yugoslavia without this turnover of members. In these days of terror and horror we can, we must, do better. We as a community supported Wally Breese when he was facing the inevitable conclusion, we gathered around Brian when he was so ill and recovered, and so many others in their times of need for community we have nursed to health. It is now Anne's time. And besides, should something happen to my son, I may need you. Anne's request overcomes my fear of looking like a drama queen and my embarrassment. Anne, for you, yes, I am back. (The lots of good words from others are deeply appreciated, but Anne, it is for Anne that I am coming back now.) For Anne, who said, "Selfishly, I want something for this. Firemen have their helmets. Veterans have their flags. Heroes have their monuments. I want to help bring this JMDL community back together. Please! That's my monument. That's my work." Les, if Marcel were to apply to be a member again, I encourage you to welcome him now. We need to each of us, myself included, be careful that when we take on issues that we do only that, take on issues, not each other. And now to bed... those who want to mock or laugh at me,. go ahead, I will merely reflect on my days in seminary in a building shared by the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and the Jesuit School of Theology, and all my wonderful Jesuit professors, and know in myself who I am... and I will reflect that all my seminary profs, Lutheran, Roman Catholic, and Jewish (did I mention Spertus College of Judaica?) would have thought that Anne's request is moment for grace to occur, so Anne, I am back in the JMDL for you, and I must ask you: at next year's Joni fest, may I have the first dance with you? (the Rev) Vince and to the others: come back, too, for Anne. now. Who knows? Maybe you will be here when I for the first time ever start preaching in here since we obviously have so many souls who need saving! The studio was in fact set up in the round to emulate in part this wheel. Indeed I believe that some of you were there. The Medicine Wheel by Kevin Dean From the North came a man of the body A white man Representing earth Signifying physicality Displaying wisdom Saying "I provide substance and mobility" "I know" From the East came a man of the mind A yellow man Representing water Signifying thought Displaying the new light of the day Saying "I provide reason and clarity" "I think" From the South came a man of the soul A black man Representing fire Signifying emotion Displaying youth and innocence Saying "I provide the gift of time" "I feel" From the West came a man of the senses A red man Representing air Signifying spirituality Displaying darkness Saying "I provide vision, the ability to see beyond the line of logic and 'taught truths' "I sense" At the centre these men converge All men Representing the cycle of life Signifying Perfect Balance Displaying Humanity Saying " We provide the symbol for all creation " "We are here" On the periphery we stand Lost men Representing imperfection Signifying weakness Displaying envy Saying "We are here to take and not return" "We grasp" At the centre is the answer No man Representing light Signifying hope Displaying trust Saying "You must chose your own destiny" "I wait" The Medicine Wheel In its most simplistic definition, the Medicine Wheel is a symbol of ALL creation, of all races of people, birds, fish, animals, trees, and stones. It's shape is that of a wagon wheel, made of stones. The circular shape of the wheel represents the earth, the sun, the moon, the cycles of life, the seasons, and day to night. Movement around the perimeter of the Medicine Wheel is in a clockwise direction, the rotation path of the earth. At the center of the wheel, at the hub, is the Creator, who sits in perfect balance. Outside the center, there is an inner circle representing the Old Woman (the earth), Father Sun, Grandmother Moon, and the four elements. Four distinct rock mounds, set in the four directions, lay on the perimeter, separated by stones representing the moon's cycles. Stones, laid from the perimeter, in straight lines, to the center (the spokes of the wheel) represent spiritual paths, leading us to the center, to perfect balance, to the Creator. The meaning of the number four, as it is in Native American life, is evident in the Medicine Wheel. Four...four directions, the four Grandfathers, four worlds, four winds, four elements (earth, air, water and fire) and the four races of man. The wheel also teaches the four aspects of our nature...physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. The easterly direction on the Medicine Wheel is the new light of day, the place of all beginnings. South is the sun at the highest point. It is a place of youth and innocence. West is from which darkness comes. It is the place of the unknown, of dreams and introspection. North is the place of winter. It is the place of wisdom. The directions also divide the Old Woman into four sections...four races. To the north is white, who bring with them mobility. The color of east is red, representing Native Americans. Our contribution to the whole is our vision, our ability to see beyond the line of logic and "taught truths". At the south is yellow, who contribute the gift of time. The color of the west is black. They provide reasoning. North - the white man -the body - I know - physical - earth -wisdom South - the black man - the soul - I feel - emotional -fire -youth and innocence East - the yellow man - the mind - I think - -mental - water -new light of day West - the red man - the spirit - I sense - spiritual -air - darkness Anybody else find this fascinating? At the same time it strikes me as so odd that you're still angry about what was basically one mistake on my part and, in contrast to that, want to welcome Marcel back, someone who over and over and over said hurtful things, not by mistake but deliberately, over a long period of time. This is all very confusing. Still, though, I'm glad you're back, Vince, and I say that sincerely. Your reaction surprised me, to put it mildly. Believe me, now that I know your sensitivity around that issue, I won't be going anywhere near it again. Life is for learnin'... one of my favorite Joni phrases. Rest well. Debra Shea NP: John Cale, Close Watch ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Sep 2001 20:20:03 -0400 From: dsk Subject: John Cale / Hallelujah NJC A while ago someone asked about John Cale and I don't think anyone has given any information about him yet. He started out with Lou Reed so he's been around for a long time. I just found out about him several months ago when the song Hallelujah at the end of the video "Basquiat" grabbed me so completely I actually watched the teeny tiny music credits carefully, found out it was John Cale singing, and went to the store the next day for some of his music. So, at this point I don't know much of his history but can wholeheartedly recommend his live cd, "Fragments of a Rainy Season". It's him singing mostly his songs in his rich and imperfect and very emotional voice, accompanying himself on piano and sometimes guitar. For me, the last two songs are worth the price of the cd, (I keep a) Close Watch (on this heart of mine), which he wrote, and Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. All the talk on the list about Hallelujah, and how wonderful Jeff Buckley's version is finally got me to the store to get something by him, so I've been listening to "Grace" for the past week. His Hallelujah is so different from Cale's version it hardly seems like the same song. It's like a spiritual experience compared to Cale's emotionally tortured one. I love his delicate guitar playing. That and his sweet voice sound so intimate. I don't think this is the version used on the tv ads for Third Watch. It's not Cale's version either. Great song, though, whoever's doing it. They have different programmers who do so many different channels and the programmers definitely have some freedom to use their favorites. I may have more to write later - right now I'm still in a little shock!! ;-) Kakki NP: For The Roses album ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Sep 2001 21:29:53 EDT From: TimandMaryPowers@aol.com Subject: Kennedy on "urge for going" Hello, I just discovered that a violinist, Nigel Kennedy, has covered "urge for going" on his CD "Classic Kennedy". has anyone heard it? OMG!!!!!!! Well, this was certainly a dream come true! I called Kakki this morning to see if she wished to have lunch- and of course, she most graciously agreed. After a bit of sightseeing, we decided on a restaurant. Kakki had a tuna melt, I had a shrimp Louie salad- relevance of this to be revealed in a moment! We were almost finished when all of a sudden I see Kakki's mouth drop to the floor and I'm feeling kicks on my shin!! Sure enough, there was our goddess seated at the table next to us!!! Who cares that Paula Abdul was sitting at the one behind us!!! Needless to say, I am still in complete shock! I'm thinking how are we going to make this happen, what do I say, do I ask for a picture??? Kakki, being the quintessential LA woman, said to just cool my jets, and we will see what happens. Kakki already mentioned how it happened, and all I can add is that JM was sooooo incredibly gracious, friendly, from the heart and interested. And man, can she talk!!!! So the food connection! Joni ordered a shrimp Louie to start, and then a tuna melt!!!!!! Signs in the heavens? perhaps more later, but it was, of course, a life-long dream come true. After we left, Joni did a little shopping and we met again downstairs- I told how I was so looking forward to seeing her again next month at Harbourfront. "Oh! Are you going to be there?" she says!!!! DUH!!! I said that it was such a nice honour for her, and to be included with such luminaries. She was so gracious. Enough for now, I have to see if one of Kakki's famous martini's will calm me down now! Best. Stephen in LA Give up smoking??? The idea is that twelve people agree to make a cdr compilation once a year and send it to the other eleven on the list. Each and every month for eleven months you get a new compilation. Once a year you have to make a compilation and send it to the other 11 people on the list. What d'ya think? Should we try it? I'd love to give it a shot and would happily do the first cdr. If you are interested in joining the cdr of the month club e-mail me off list. If we get to twelve members right away, I'll post to the list and maybe a second group can start independantly. There are no rules to speak of other than you must have access to a cd burner, post office, etc, etc. Maybe excluding Joni herself from the compolations (ok, maybe a song or two tops), as most of us already have all her cd's. The point is to enlighten, entertain, enjoy and explore new music from a different perspective. Hopefully, we'll all get to hear some things we woulden't have the chance to otherwise. So, If you're intersted, e-mail me with your name and location. If you want a particular month assigned to you for making a cdr, let me know that too (first come first served). When we get to twelve, I'll do the first compilation (the October issue) Have Fun! Tyler Listen to your Yahoo! Written and researched with her co-operation, and including new interviews with close friends, contemporaries, musicians and industry insiders, this is the first in-depth biography of one of the world's most influential recording artists. FROM THE PUBLISHER: It is perhaps surprising that, despite being one of the most innovative and influential artists of the twentieth century, Joni Mitchell has been largely ignored by the 'serious' rock writing fraternity until now. We are very proud to be publishing the first in-depth biography of this artistic icon, which focuses on both her music and her visual art and assesses its place in modern cultural history. Karen has really done justice to her subject, spending a year immersed in research, visiting Joni's birthplace in Canada, interviewing many of Joni's closest colleagues and friends, including Larry Klein and Joel Bernstein, and digging out unpublished correspondence between Joni and modernist painter Georgia O'Keeffe during the last years of the artist's life. Detailed, balanced and analytical, this book is sure to be considered the last word on Joni Mitchell for years to come. FROM THE INSIDE FLAP: Renaissance woman, painter and poet, one of the great formative influences on contemporary popular music, Joni Mitchell is a true icon. In an artistic career spanning four decades, she inspired the 1960s baby-boomers, created a soundtrack for the Woodstock generation and received critical acclaim for a succession of groundbreaking albums including Clouds, Blue, Court and Spark and The Hissing of Summer Lawns. By the late 1970s Mitchell had been largely written off by the mainstream music industry and the critics, but in the years that followed, she came to be acknowledged as a pivotal inspiration for a new generation of musicians and songwriters: women like Suzanne Vega, Rickie Lee Jones, Sheryl Crow, Tori Amos and Alanis Morrisette, as well as male artists including Prince, Elvis Costello, Morrissey, Seal and Beck. Mitchell has always defied musical fashion and genre, experimenting boldly with samples and exploring world music before they were 'discovered' by the mainstream and merging jazz and poetry at a time when it was painfully unhip to do so. During the 1990s and into the new century, she has continued to create adventurous and highly-regarded music with albums like Turbulent Indigo and Both Sides Now, and has been honoured with numerous industry awards and international accolades. Her musical creativity is matched by her passion for the visual arts - her paintings and photography have been exhibited to acclaim in Canada, the USA, Japan and the UK. Shadows and Light is the first book to comprehensively chart the life of this extraordinary woman. Mitchell's story is told with an unrivalled degree of access, through revelatory interviews with many of those closest to her (many with Mitchell's blessing), including friends and musical collaborators. Broad in scope and full of fascinating detail, Shadows and Light is the definitive biography of a musical legend. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Karen O'Brien is a music journalist and a BBC World Service radio news producer. She has written and broadcast widely on the arts. Karen's previous book, Hymn to Her, a collection of writings on women musicians, was published by Virago in 1995. She is a New Zealander by birth and a Londoner by choice. for now ~ take care, - ------- simon - ------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Sep 2001 22:59:45 -0700 From: jan Subject: Re: John Cale / Hallelujah NJC (snip) >I don't think this is the version used on the tv ads for Third Watch. >It's not Cale's version either.
