["Kakki" Subject: thoughts Last Tuesday was a horrible day in every sense of the word and like many of you I grieve for the people of New York and Washington whose lives were inexplicably changed in the matter of an hour. To see America come together and help each other out is inspiring and heartbreaking, because we finally realize what we have and how fragile life as we know it is. I fear that the Muslim community will take much abuse and that their faith and way of life will be lived in fear of retaliation by ignorant people, but I am not going to say that I am surprised or shocked by this backlash, because I am not. I am not the most politically correct person in the world and the open door policy of our government has been too willing to let people into this country that intend to harm us. The very fact that family members of Osama bin Laden own a condo in Boston is enough to enfuriate me to no end. The fact that some of these hijackers were allowed into our country, into our school systems, only to use this against us is horrifying, yet it went on right under our noses. Until last Tuesday we all felt safe, dare I say invincible, to such types of attacks yet in the course of an hour four planes were hijacked, and 6,000 people lost their lives. Is it fair to say that from this day forward I will never be able to look at a young muslim man and not think that he was sent here to kill me because I am American? Maybe it is and maybe it isn't, but that prejudice is now instilled in me and will never go away. These followers of bin Laden-the Al Qaeda-want to kill us, they hate everything we stand for, everything our country stands for, and will stop at nothing to do so. They are not your typical ignorant terrorist either. They outsmarted the American Intelligence Community which our tax dollars support. Several posts said that CNN posted pictures from 1991, but that is not the case. "In Nablus, on the West Bank, Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, and in East Jerusalem hundreds openly celebrated, shooting victory shots in the air and handing out candy (a practice done by Palestinian terrorist groups when one of their own succeeds in killing jews)". These are serious threats to our freedom, and by ours I mean everyone in America whether they be black, white, catholic, baptist, jewish, muslim, islamic, or from f*&%*&*ing Mars. 62 countries lost people last Tuesday, but in America we lost a sense of safety that for the past fifty years has not been challenged. There is a faceless enemy that walks among us and unfortunately I can no longer be objective about it, because I can't honestly say that I believe our government can protect us from it. With this post I don't mean to infuriate or scare people this is just the way I feel. I feel as if I woke up on Tuesday from a 27 year coma and realized that my trivial problems, were just that. I can't remember a time I ever really gave thanks for what I have and that made me ashamed because I have been afforded so much in my life. A good family, a good education, and of course good taste in music, but also the reality that I live in a country not torn apart by war and destruction which is why so many people do come here. America, land of the free, should be a place people seek solace, but who those people are is going to have to come under scrutiny. I don't post often, but reading the posts from this past week has been therapeutic and knowing that no one that posts regularly to this list has been harmed is nothing short of divine intervention. That is the reason there is no njc tag because although I have never met any of you personally you are all a part of my daily routine and bring me to a place of normalacy which has become a fleeting notion. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Sep 2001 14:49:26 EDT From: IVPAUL42@aol.com Subject: Re: The Clear Channel Radio response ... I just wanted to share my perspective of having a flag on my door. I would never look down on anyone who did not have a flag on their door or their car, etc.., I did what I did for comfort. It was my way of identifying with my fellow citizens concerning the horrific acts perpetrated against Americans. It must be noted that several countries lost their citizens in the WTC attack as well. I don't consider myself a scoundrel for being patriotic, but I know that there are some hiding under the flag. Those people are attacking innocent American citizens of Arab descent. I also have two brothers and two nieces on high alert in the Air Force. I know them to be good and decent people who are patriotic. Far from it. How could anyone just "forget" something as atrocious as this? Anyone that knows me, knows that I am a deeply compassionate person and I feel others' pain deeply. Today and for however long I am needed, I am doing my small part to help the friend that lost her son-in-law on Flight 11 by doing her job for her in a gift store. My point is not to forget, but to move forward with our lives **when the time is right for each of us**, which of course will be different for each person. I know I *personally* feel like I am contributing to the world in my own little way by the little things I do everyday now, as opposed to being totally non-fuctioning for 3 days since Tuesday. And that not only feels good, but sends a message to the terroists that we will continue to embrace the spirit that lives inside us. They can never take that away. My 2 cents. To me it is completely irrelevant what happened when or how or what. We've been attacked by pure evil. Period. There is no reasoning in it. There is no way to go back and wring our hands and think of everything we might have done the past 50 to "deserve" this. If one did go back, they would mostly find that we, as usual, were dragged screaming and kicking into these conflicts that were not of our own making. Americans have always been isolationists by nature. We really don't like to go running off to fight battles in other countries. Why would we? At the same time, we continue to send our hard-working taxpayer dollars and private charity dollars to aid and support people all over the world who hate us and spit in our face. Why have we gotten involved in the Middle East? Short answers - to support and help defend Israel and later, to help defend Kuwait when they were invaded by Iraq. And yes, also to protect the oil reserves that we are dependent on because we want to conserve our own and also do not want an environmental problem on our soil. Whether we should have ever made these decisions is irrelevant now. The bottom line is that Bin Laden would never, ever be so well-financed to plot murder against us had we not been sending our American dollars for oil to his region all these years. Oh we are so terrible - yeah right. We are the "Great Scapegoat" not the "Great Satan" and no doubt we will continue letting the rest of the world blame us for everything and spit in our faces and continue to give them our aid in time of need. We are also the "Great Suckers." Retaliation? Give me a break. We are allowed to DEFEND and PROTECT our country and our citizens, I would think, at this point. And for those who think this is the typical rantings of a over-zealous patriotic American, I say go right ahead. Why should I care what you think when you could care less about our safety and survival or which group of us gets vaporized next and would rather seek to dredge up reasons why we deserve this. Nobody deserves this. And for the record, we have not yet gone off and bombed the hell out of Afghanistan. We are trying every diplomatic avenue possible to try to resolve this without resorting to that. I wish the people who are so focused on wanting us to reflect and ponder on our "sins" would focus more on calling for Bin Laden to cease and desist at this point. "I hope to reflect the feelings of all Muslims and people around the world whose sympathies go out to the victims of this sorrowful moment." I agree there are many Arab-Americans who unfortunately will suffer abuse because of the terrorists, and many of them are Christians, not Muslims. But to say that all the Muslims who are not terrorists are blameless is also not true, because either by unintended financial support or mere benign neglect, they have allowed the extremist faction to flourish. I could be wrong here, but I believe that if they truly wanted to, the overwhelming majority of Muslims could keep in check the terrorists faction. But I think this "war" is as much a battle between mainstream Muslims and the radical Muslims who do not like the acceptance by the mainstream of our Western culture. The fact that Iran and, to a lesser extent, Pakistan, want to join in on our side, tells me that this war isn't so much about the U.S. support of Israel as it is a growing rift between the Muslim factions. I see now where Yasser Arafat wants to join the coalition the U.S. is forming to move against bin Laden and his supporters. Either Arafat truly has decided his people's goals cannot be reached through terrorism or he realizes that terrorists striking against the heart of the United States gives the rest of the terrorist world a bad name. ;>) Paul I ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Sep 2001 18:25:43 EDT From: FredNow@aol.com Subject: Re: he Clear Channel Radio response ... A lot of people seem to flinch or laugh when i mention the title of that course. I knew it wasn't going to be so bad, and guess what- it wasn't. In fact it was really rather gripping. The first number of lectures are given by a lecturer i had last year for Plant Anatomy. He is a "strange boy" as they say. He has some odd and quirky ways. I was one of very few that liked the man. He was a good lecturer, and i admired his organisational prowess. He tended to get over excited by the subject matter- flowers! He had an interest in the history of science and he included this in the lecture series as a way to intelletually engage the class. In my case it worked. So, i chose this course this year, much to the scorn of some of my friends:-) He got a little over excited by the subject matter- the introduction of experimental methods into science by the likes of Robert Boyle. After the lecture i went to the lecturer to sign my form and officially put me into the unit. He took a look at the form i handed him and said "Ahhhh, you did Botany last year, did you not?" "i did" says i. "Do you mind if i ask a question? Why didnt you take it this year". Well, i explained to him that i chose my course in order to take Psychology with a science background, i thought it would give me a useful perspective. HE went on to state that *I* had done well in the previous years exams, to which i replied that i liked the subject. "Did you know you won a prize?" he asked. Of course i laughed, and asked him what he meant. Apparently i achieved the highest result in the year, and will be awarded a college prize. Man, am i shocked or what??? I thought i did only "okay" in the exams- just ask Chris Marshall, i'm sure he remembers my stress at the time, and all my worry that i wouldn't do well enough to get the course of my choice:-) I'm one happy monkey this evening, to be sure. Of course, the US is not perfect. We've made mistakes and even committed some grave sins. The Americans I've been talking with acknowledge our failings and are even willing to reflect on how we might have contributed to the situation we face today. But for crying out loud, read what Bin Laden has to say. "Pure evil" about sums it up. His worldview is absolutely demonic. Various folks have posted sources of information on this guy and his buddies. Read it, and see if "pure evil" does not apply. We cannot treat this man as just another dissident. Parallels to Hitler are apt. He hates us (Americans) for the mere fact that we exist. We indeed must DEFEND and PROTECT ourselves Okay, this may sound mean: I can tolerate some of this criticism of the US from my fellow Americans. But I wish the rest of you could just shut up and let us grieve for awhile. I'm not thinking of any particular "non-American" so please don't jump on me. But can't you recognize that it's just not the best time to heap on the criticism? I am so raw right now. I vacillate between tears and anxiety attacks. Sleep is elusive and nightmares frequent. I have just heard so much, some 2nd hand and some 1st hand that has made me sick to my stomach. I have been speaking out in hopes that people will learn something. I think the biggest problem is that people really just don't know about Islam and what it stands for and what they believe. It is so opposite from what these terrorists say and claim is in the name of Islam which I guess is the great irony in it all. I have been studying it, and while I am no great expert, what I have learned is very enlightening. I have a class called Islamic Mysticism which I enjoy. I think as Americans we still have a long way to go with these issues. I am so behind on my mail but thought I'd just add that...lol. The day of the attack, Cat posted a brief statement expressing his condolences. There is now a much lengthier statement posted there expressing both his sympathy and reiterating the position of traditional Islam regarding such terrorist attacks. It's really very informative. "What I am Doing On My Summer Vacation" I know some of you may think this announcement may be inappropriate, considering the situation this past week, and I apologize if you are offended. I look at this post as a light in the darkness, and something for us all to look forward to at a time when it seems like hope and looking towards the "future" is far away. With that "ray of hope" I offer this post and this announcement to all, Joni-onlys and the regular list as well. Jonifest has grown by leaps and bounds every year. Each year, I strive to improve on the Fest before, learning each year from the one before. The New England Labor Day Jonifest has grown from a one-day, 25 person, intimate house gathering, to a full-blown, three day festival complete with multiple meals, sound, lighting, and large numbers. We have now expanded to the point where we have outgrown the house in Topsfield. Also, many of you thought it was difficult this year to be spread out in area hotels, and have requested that we be under one roof next hear. Because Labor Day weekend is such a busy holiday, I started thinking about the 5th anniversary of the New England Labor Day Joni Fest as soon as you all left my house a few short weeks ago. I have been in negotiations for the past several weeks with a place that I feel is an absolutely "perfect" fit for us. "Full Moon" is a rustic resort on 100 acres of natural beauty in the Catskill Mountains of New York. It is a wonderful place with an emphasis on music and musical gatherings. Sal and I drove out to Catskills this past Saturday to check out the Full Moon property firsthand. Here are my impressions: The rooms are very simple and rustic; some accommodations have shared baths. This is *not* the Sheraton, by any means, but the rooms are very clean and accommodating. There is a beautiful spring-fed swimming pool and a small duck pond on the property. In addition to the performance space, there are several smaller spaces in which to gather that could be used for workshops, jamming or hanging out. The buffet-style meals were excellent and filling, and included many locally grown vegetables. Through much time and energy on both sides, Full Moon and I have reached an agreement that we both feel comfortable with. There will be many changes to what we have known to be Jonifest in New England, but I believe they are all WONDERFUL changes, and will enhance our experience of community, music, connecting, and having a good time!! Considering this will be the 5th Anniversary of this particular Fest, I think it is a great time for these changes. Here are the details: 1) Because Labor Day weekend is Full Moon's busiest weekend of the whole year, they wanted me to guarantee a complete sellout of 120, which was too much of a personal risk and liability for me. So, the date for Jonifest 2002 had to be changed to August 23-26. (Arriving anytime on Friday, and leaving on Monday) I truly hope that will not be a problem for anyone, and also hope that some of you that weren't able to come "because" it was Labor Day weekend, will be able to join us this year. (David Lahm? Marian? Terry? others?) 2) Obviously, we can't call this the "New England" anything, because it will now be in New York State, so we will have to think of a new name. 3) The only way to sign up for this weekend is to sign up and pay for the entire weekend, even if you do not eat all the meals, or stay all 3 nights. Extenuating circumstances will be considered only *after* the minimum requirements are met. 4) Please know that if I decide to go ahead with this, I will be **personally** guaranteeing the rental of this entire property with certain minimums. This amounts to a HUGE amount of money, risk and liability. However, we definitely have a great track record, Jonifest has grown every single year, and more and more people are already talking about joining us that haven't joined us before. My vision: My vision of the weekend is three separate nights of scheduled performances instead of one long day and night. Friday night might be spent either jamming, or perhaps we could talk 2 or 3 of the professional musicians on the list to take an hour each to perform. (David Lahm? Gregg Cagno? Bryan Thomas?) Saturday and Sunday nights would be scheduled similarly to the way it's been the last few years, with the amount of performance time divided into the number of people that want to play. Of course, we will have lots of sing-a-longs as well. Days might be spent jamming, participating in workshops, (Marian? Claud? Anne?) time at the pool, rehearsing, walking in nature, connecting with each other. We will have the entire property for the entire weekend, so it's really only limited by our imagination. Of course, I will be welcoming input from everyone. I also envision people possibly bringing their significant others to share in the weekend with them. There are lots of other area interests, including some great fishing spots, antiquing, and of course the town of Woodstock is very close. ~~~~~The date is guaranteed to us *only* after a deposit is made. Once that happens, not only are we guaranteed the space, but we "have" to fill the numbers, otherwise, it comes out of my pocket personally.~~~~~~~ So..... this is what I need from you: As soon as possible, please go to the following website that Les has put together for me, and take a look at the pictures we took at Full Moon this past Saturday. I have included descriptions of accommodations as well as buildings. From there, you can also access a link to the website for Full Moon. Please check it out thoroughly and e-mail me privately with the following information: 1) Are you interested in going to Jonifest at Full Moon August 23-26, 2002? If no, why not? If yes, please answer the following questions: 2) On a scale of 1-10, (1 being "a little", and 10 being a "definite", how interested are you in attending this Fest? 3) Are you willing to commit to a 3 day weekend? 4) Are you willing to send in a $75-$100 NONREFUNDABLE deposit? (Refundable only "if" and when the minimum requirements and expenses are met, and paid "after" the Jonifest weekend.) 5) Which of the many options for accommodations are you interested in? 6) Do you have any other concerns or comments? Once I have gathered all the information, I will make a decision as to whether there is enough interest to move forward with this, and I will start asking for deposits. I truly hope you are excited about this possibility as I am!!
