Also that week, there was interview with John Howard (our Prime Minister) and he also was quoted to say he like Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan etc. I do admit, liking the same artist as him doesn't exactly thrill me... Felicity was walking across Highbury Fields on her way to the tube station. Everyone stopped and stood in silence, busses stopped and traffic stopped - silence. Will was on a tube train travelling up on the Northern Line when the driver came on the intercom to announce the 3 minutes silence. The crowded tube car fell silent - all except for two Chinese women who continued yattering away loudly in Chinese totally unaware of the driver's request or the sudden silence all around them - Will tells me no one had the heart to tell them but just remained silent in their own thoughts - which in his case became a little jumbled!! :) (China, I hear, are one of the latest countries, to condemn the terrorists and express support). Afterwards, I heard a tearful caller to a radio talk show say that in her part of London the whole world stopped when the local school's loud whistle sounded. At the time her two cats had been scampering around her kitchen playing with each other. They suddenly stopped and sat completely still for three minutes. They are wonderful words. And how right you are about how isolating it is to be a pacifist. I get really worried about the bellicose talk that is springing up now (both here in England and, from what I read, in the USA) about bombing X, Y or Z to buggery. Like that's going to help one bit. I truly believe it can only make things worse, and hope that wiser counsel will prevail, even if it is only for the purely pragmatic reason that bombing more people is more likely to strengthen the resolve of the next generation of suicidal psychopaths than to cow them. This is a single award for which any album released in the last year, in any genre, can be nominated by the record companies, or even, in the case of small cottage industries, by the artists themselves. There is a shortlist of 12 albums, voted on by various music bods (11 this year, as Gorillaz puled out in a huff because they felt it was beneath their credibility, or something like that). Anyway, there were some great records on the shortlist this year, notably Goldfrapp's debut, Ed Harcourt, Radiohead's Amnesiac, etc. I watched the shindig on telly, and when PJ Harvey's Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea was announced as the winner, I did a bit of the old punching the air and "Yes! Yes! Yes!" routine. As it turned out, she was/is on tour in the USA at the moment, and her short address down a crackly phone line was both gracious and appropriately reflective of the sombre mood. My admiration for her crept up yet another notch. Keep listening to music you love, dear people, it heals. At the height of the conflict on this list, I had Jane Siberry's When I Was A Boy playing. I defy anyone to listen to Love Is Everything, or Calling All Angels or The Vigil and stay angry. I saw everyone huddled together in the front, in a little hallway ... and at first it scared me...there was absolute silence. I looked at the front door to see a hand made sign "three minutes silence" and that was all it took to open up the well of tears for me. Yesterday, our PM Jean Chretien declared a national day of mourning, the fourth in our entire history. American flags are flying everywhere, including hanging in the windows of Fortinos where we do groceries. The solidarity is so moving. The open support of our American neighbours is encouraging. I continue to pray for peace and for that peace to find its way into the hearts of our Joni family as well. Catherine, I know what you mean about the sound of planes or any noises. We've heard things that resemble gun shots here and it has been so stressful. I drive down the street and when stopped at the lights, I notice tall buildings. I try to imagine. Then I realize I can never fully imagine. When I see the images on the front page of the newspaper in colour, it confirms that. I look inside and see a black and white image of a young firefighter in full gear, covered in soot , a tender portrait of him with eyes closed, head leaning on hand, asleep. Resting . It broke my heart. That picture said so much. And then there are the images of ground zero. Terrifying. The overwhelming images still cannot find their way inside me to a place of believing this really happened. It sickens me to know that it is all true. Im so sorry we are all facing this. I must say how touched and grateful I am to everyone for writing and sharing their experiences . I have learned so much from you. the road is long. love, Mags. I keep finding things in people's posts that bring me to tears - yesterday Kay's, this morning, Patrick's. Last night I heard an airplane and just sort of STOPPED for a moment, wondering where it was going. A friend sent me this poem by Auden, which is a little long, but very apropos. love to all, Yael on the dawn of WWII, Auden wrote this poem: September 1, 1939 W.H. Auden I sit in one of the dives On Fifty-second Street Uncertain and afraid As the clever hopes expire Of a low dishonest decade: Waves of anger and fear Circulate over the bright And darkened lands of the earth, Obsessing our private lives; The unmentionable odour of death Offends the September night. Accurate scholarship can Unearth the whole offence From Luther until now That has driven a culture mad, Find what occurred at Linz, What huge imago made A psychopathic god: I and the public know What all schoolchildren learn, Those to whom evil is done Do evil in return. Exiled Thucydides knew All that a speech can say About Democracy, And what dictators do, The elderly rubbish they talk To an apathetic grave; Analysed all in his book, The enlightenment driven away, The habit-forming pain, Mismanagement and grief: We must suffer them all again. Into this neutral air Where blind skyscrapers use Their full height to proclaim The strength of Collective Man, Each language pours its vain Competitive excuse: But who can live for long In an euphoric dream; Out of the mirror they stare, Imperialism's face And the international wrong. Faces along the bar Cling to their average day: The lights must never go out, The music must always play, All the conventions conspire To make this fort assume The furniture of home; Lest we should see where we are, Lost in a haunted wood, Children afraid of the night Who have never been happy or good. The windiest militant trash Important Persons shout Is not so crude as our wish: What mad Nijinsky wrote About Diaghilev Is true of the normal heart; For the error bred in the bone Of each woman and each man Craves what it cannot have, Not universal love But to be loved alone. From the conservative dark Into the ethical life The dense commuters come, Repeating their morning vow; 'I will be true to the wife, I'll concentrate more on my work,' And helpless governors wake To resume their compulsory game: Who can release them now, Who can reach the dead, Who can speak for the dumb? All I have is a voice To undo the folded lie, The romantic lie in the brain Of the sensual man-in-the-street And the lie of Authority Whose buildings grope the sky: There is no such thing as the State And no one exists alone; Hunger allows no choice To the citizen or the police; We must love one another or die. Defenseless under the night Our world in stupor lies; Yet, dotted everywhere, Ironic points of light Flash out wherever the Just Exchange their messages: May I, composed like them Of Eros and of dust, Beleaguered by the same Negation and despair, Show an affirming flame. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Sep 2001 15:48:04 +0200 From: "Mike Pritchard" Subject: NJC Raymond Chandler titbits Two Raymond Chandler titbits: both taken from Tom Hiney's biography. 1. Many of you may know that Raymond Chandler frequently 'cannibalized' (his word) his short stories for later use in some of his novels, saying that the short stories and novels were created in a different form, and therefore the public wasn't being cheated. Chandler received only one letter of complaint, from a U.S. diplomat in Mexico City. The diplomat's name? Howard Hunt, later to become notorious for the Watergate affair. The second is a little more serious, and is accompanied by a 'mea culpa'. I have always felt it important to see, hear and read as many other points of view as possible in order to get a more 'complete' picture than the one usually presented in the mass media. My 'search for truth' is important to me in separating the wheat from the chaff but I now realise that this is not the time for it. Now is the time for grieving, mourning, supporting, and picking up the pieces. Please read the following with this in mind. 2. Chandler, talking of the British people's reaction to the WWII bombing of London, described them as 'the least hysterical people in the world', saying "They can take a terrible pounding and still keep on planting lobelias". I believe the US population to be equally blessed with enough character to withstand and overcome the events of these terrible days. Whatever the future brings, peace or war, please, keep planting those lobelias. Troy D. Perry Founder and Moderator Metropolitan Community Churches A Response To The Rev. Jerry Falwell While many will understandably feel anger toward Jerry Falwell for his outrageous and callous remarks that gays and lesbians, feminists and the supporters of women's rights are responsible for the climate leading to the terrorist attacks this week, I am today feeling a great sense of sadness. I am saddened that on this day devoted to prayer and remembrance and healing, Jerry Falwell has once again uttered untrue and hurtful words that inflame people and which divide, rather than bring us together. The truth is that for many, many years, gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered persons have been the targets -- not the perpetrators -- of hatred, attacks, rejection, and bashings. For Jerry Falwell to further demonize LGBT people is morally wrong. As an openly gay minister, I take special exception to Jerry Falwell's comments. As LGBT people, we have known far too often what it is to be attacked. In fact, more than 30 of our predominantly gay Metropolitan Community Churches have been the targets of the hate crimes of arson and firebombing. One of our own MCC members who worked in the World Trade Center is today in the hospital with severe burns, and unconscious. We ask for the prayers of all people of goodwill for her recovery, and for her children during this time. Another MCC member, a police officer, is working 12 hours days in the midst of the rubble -- and then volunteering when his shift is over. And still another MCC member who worked in the World Trade Center has lost scores of friends and coworkers, and is also serving as a volunteer on the scene. Mr. Falwell should know that the response of the gay community has been one of love and sacrifice and giving. Our MCC churches around the world have joined with the LGBT community to offer prayer vigils, and to collect funds and supplies for the Red Cross and other groups serving the victims of this tragedy. For a long time, I've listened to Jerry Falwell tell gay people to repent. Today, I'm calling on Jerry Falwell to repent -- and to repudiate his own cruel and untrue attack on the gay community. /signed/ The Rev. Troy D. For years now CNN and other outlets have put these clowns on as some sort of "voice of the Christian right." This is all calculated and utter bullshit. They know these clowns are not representive of most any real Christian voice and I think, jadedly, that they just put them on for the Jerry Springer effect and to raise people's blood pressure. I think they have always made the majority of American's skin crawl. It's way overtime for them to go. After their disgusting appearances yesterday, it should now be clear to everyone that they are nothing but slick actors. I was glad that now, in this instance they may have finally shown their true colors to those who may not have noticed them before. The fact that they could not for one day say something truly compassionate and Christian and could do nothing but stick to their usual script proves them out as the empty, devoid opportunitists they really are. So it was with great joy that I welcomed Victor who came up to visit with me last night. He was on his way to Lake Hartwell from his new abode in Athens, GA, and came up early for a visit. We went to our favorite nearby pizza joint and had a yummy Greek Vegetarian pizza, and a couple pitchers of Killian's. Then it was back to my house where Victor entertained my wife and me with some music. Valerie is a Nick Drake fan, so she really liked Victor's Drake songs, and I commented that Victor had the ability to channel the spirit of whoever he was playing. When she gave me a look like I was nuts, I just said "Victor, play some Neil Young", and Victor proceeded to play "Old Man", "Needle and the Damage Done", & "After The Gold Rush". Tremendous set, and my wife was in disbelief! She said it was like having Neil in our living room. The musical highlight for me was that I was the FIRST to hear Victor's newest song, "Parsonage Lane", about Jonifest. He shared the lyrics here not too long ago. A very pretty song, I commented that the chords sounded a lot like Joni's "A Melody In Your Name",which Victor had never heard, so we listened to a little Joni, played some more, and called it a night. Victor woke up early, looking for something in my home to play; the microwave, cooking utensils, etc. So to divert him, I made us a big breakfast and we spent a relaxing morning listening to Joni covers. Victor said that I converted him! Cool! He then took off and headed for the lake. Ashara, I don't see why you make such a big to-do over throwing these Jonifests. Nothing to it! :~D Thanks to Victor for being a great guest and filling our house with music and his gentle spirit. it was a nice way to wind down the week. I was hoping that this did not go any further than the 700 club broadcast I happened onto to day before yesterday. I watched Pat say something similar and was horrified. Guys, I used to work for this organization as a crisis counselor. What you are seeing is called a "religious spirit" or "religiosity." It is where someone feels the need to act as judge and jury for God. Please understand that God doesn't always need this kind of help. He is much more sensitive and compassionate to those whose hearts are breaking and sorrowful. He has His own unique and omnipotent way of dealing with the human heart without breaking it or crushing it. According to the Christian faith, in the Old Testament, He did have prophets which he sent to warn the people of a certain land or nation about a coming judgment. However, those prophets were put through God's crucible of purification before they were allowed to utter a single word. Their hearts were tested and tried like fire before they were allowed to "speak for God." Prophets were also used because at the time, that was the only way God could or would communicate with His people. I deeply apologize for the hurt and the anger these words have caused. I say this because I have worked on the set with Pat Robertson and I know this man. All I will say about that is that one must search his or her own heart before passing judgment on others. God hates a hypocrite. Look at Billy Graham. He always cuts to the point in his sermons, and though many feel may change their lives because of his words, he does not bring condemnation on anyone. He is just as much a man of God as anyone else, yet his words brought comfort and soothed the hearts of many of the bereaved of the nation. That is what I felt God really wanted. I have a feeling that Billy is grieved by these statements as well. My deepest apologies as one who shares the Christian faith. Mr. Sinclair was well known as a crotchety character with plenty to say and not shy about saying it. Irascible might be a good adjective for describing him. He called a spade a spade. I don't know what he would be saying if he were alive to observe the last 20 years of American foreign policy and interference. (I don't know a lot about that, but from the little I do know, I don't think we can be so surprised that Americans have been attacked by terrorists.) **** Here in Canada, I would venture to say everyone is feeling this horrific event on a level similar to what Americans are feeling. I have just sent a donation to the Red Cross relief fund and will give blood for the first time ever (I am afraid of needles) on Wednesday when there is a clinic in my little town. I cry when I watch the news, and the first thing I think of when I wake up in the morning is what has happened to all those people and their families and friends. Far away as it is from Alberta, I cannot help but be deeply affected. I guess the fucking pricks who did this are proud of themselves. They must be spiritless. For me, this is also a wake-up call, a reminder that physical life is neither safe nor forever and I need to make this event count in my own life somehow by effecting a change in how I live it. I may need to actively work for peace and tolerance rather than just living it in my personal life. I need to focus on my spiritual enlightenment before it is too late to do so and make any difference. I also feel an intense gratitude to those people who are in New York and Washington right now doing the rescue work. They are, to my mind, doing me a personal favour by putting themselves through that hell -- which is exactly what it must be, for them. They are doing what I wish I could be there doing, taking some of the load in a physical way. I feel so helpless and so, so sad. Rest eternal grant them O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon them. Holy One, in your mercy: hear our prayer. Almighty God, shield of the oppressed, hear us as we pray for injured and the hurting. Be merciful to those who suffer, in body or in mind, to those who are in danger or distress, and who have suffered loss. Let your love surround the infirm and the helpless. Be especially near to those who may yet pass through the valley of death. Grant them also merciful and eternal rest, and the warmth of your perpetual light. Holy One, in your mercy: hear our prayer. Give strength to doctors, nurses, technicians, ambulance drivers, paramedics, and those who care for the ill and injured. Bless with your mercy all fire and police personnel, soldiers and others in military service and those who watch over the public safety. Comfort them in their own pain in the midst of these things. Make them brave to battle the devastation of terrorist attacks, trusting in your power to overcome death and pain and crying. Holy One, in your mercy: hear our prayer. For those who are filled with fear because of the unknown fate of those that they love; Holy One, in your mercy: hear our prayer. For those who are filled with fear because they are of the Islamic faith or Arabic descent, for Alif and all who may be threatened by prejudice and bigotry, Holy One, in your mercy: hear our prayer. For those who have witnessed these tragic events which shall burn forever in their memories, Holy One, in your mercy: hear our prayer. For those who organized and who committed these acts, we know that they too are your children and while we may not this day be comfortable with the yoke of love, we must forgive and find a common humanity with those who hate us. Holy One, in your mercy: hear our prayer. For the leaders of our nation and all nations that they might have wisdom, and seek political solutions so that this cycle of violence might end; others must not be added to the list of victims of these days. We beg you in your mercy to stop the headlong rush to war. Holy One, in your mercy: hear our prayer. For those in the military who are on alert, for Jeremy who birthday is this week and for the families of those who serve in the armed services, of this nation and all nations, Holy One, in your mercy: hear our prayer. O God of love, O God of peace, make wars throughout this world to cease. The wrath of sinful folk restrain, give peace, O Holy One, give again. Holy One, in your mercy: hear our prayer. Into your hands, O God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Savior.
