Because we suffered at the hands of many others does not give us the right to beat another people into the ground. Because we lost so many in the Halocaust does not mean we should be given the guilty blessing of the United States. Israel's aggression is a prime example of the oppressed becoming the oppressor. It is impossible to dialogue with a zealot such as laurent. One thing that has become apparent to me as I have lived my life is the fact that the more someone tries to cram something down someone's throat...the less power and credibility they have with the people they are trying to impress...eventually they get tuned out because they are viewed as obdurate zealots. I say this to you Debra and Colin so you do not waste your time. I can't remember what gender it is when it means "morning" (German has three genders, masculine (der), feminine (die) and neuter (das), and something that we think of as "feminine" may not necessarily be in the feminine gender, e.g. the word for "girl" is "Madchen" (with an umlaut over the /a/) and it's a neuter gender noun. German has four declensions too, just to confuse things even more). I took German in highschool, so that's going back a loooooonnnng way. There are one or two Germans on the list who could probably tell us (we hope!) "Morgen" as "tomorrow" - isn't "tomorrow" and adverb or something? Don't think it's a noun. I'm confused. I agree that it's probably stretching things a bit to think that Joni was being dualistic here, but it's interesting just the same. I hasten to add it was all that I expected and then some. I had been to the Pazfest in New Orleans last year and I am glad to say that, this being my second, they get better and better and yet each one has its own "personality" so to speak. This is mainly due to the place in which it is held. The theme that kept popping into my head the entire time this year was "Place of Mystery" as in "Where the frick are we" which I must have said a million times as we drove (or tried to) from place to place. The joy is that after you get completely lost you are still no more than a mile or two from wherever you wanted to be which is good. More on this later. This was my first trip to Boston and New England so we just had to take some time to trip around and see the place. Im avidly into history and so this place has history deeper than most others in the U.S. do so it was a must that I devote some time to seeing the sites, and there are sites coming out the wazoo in New England and Boston in particular. In fact there are so many sites on so many subjects and historical eras that its like seeing the performer who bangs out hit after hit and you keep saying "I didnt know he wrote that too". Well Boston and new England are like that. I recall Julius saying that he felt the vibes of spirits at some location there and all I can say is they are everywhere you go. From the famous locations everyone knows about to very obscure ones that you only find out about when someone takes some time to share them with you. It is an incredible and beautiful place and one in which any person could enjoy and spend a ton of time and still not see the whole place. Prior to going I made sure to have several discussions about what the music venues would be like and how the Asharafests have been conducted. I gave alot of thought into which songs to do and had two sets tailored to how I was told the venues would be in terms of ambience and sound systems and what the moods of the listeners were likely to be at the two places. The Church in Newburyport and Atty Maes on Plum Island. I had had a chance to work on some things whenever my ridiculous schedule permitted but I was satisfied with what I had planned to do. I also had the advantage of having obtained the prior CD sets of the music that had been played at other venues and I could still recall the few isolated handclaps echoeing in the lounge at Atty Maes. No problem. The church was going to be a mello and warm place and I expected Atty Maes to be a slightly more informal setting. THAT was ultimately an understatement sort of like George Custers thinking that the Little Big Horn would be a "picnic". But I digress. It was the usual last minute snafus and "I thought YOU checked to see if the TV was turned off" prior to us leaving SF. But we got off easily thanks to the completion of the massive SF Airport renovation which has created alot more access and spaciousness to the entire place. We settled into the comfort of American Airlines and the flight to Boston was a breeze. We landed Thursday night into a gorgeous early evening atmosphere. Hopped aboard a van and then creeped out of the airport into what amounts to an enormous construction project that had no beginning and no seeming end. Boston is "under construction". In fact it is akin to San Jose's Winchester Mystery House which (for the unknowing)is a giant victorian house with a million rooms that Sarah Winchester (widow of the inventor of the Winchester rifle)had constantly worked on for 50 years so that the hammers would keep the spirits away. I think Boston is doing the same thing. it must be. The city has a highway project called the "Big Dig" which is now over 42 BILLION dollars over budget. The "Big Dig" was part of this massive construction thing that went all the way from the airport to the door of the hotel. Once there however we looked out our hotel window into an incredible vintage city filled with incredible architecture tons of trees and flowers and nooks and crannies. We immediately began our walk through the Threatre District and one block later we come to a huge and beautiful park called Boston Commons which has a date as per its inception: 1630. I had never seen anything so old in any form and coming from California wherin something in 1930 is considered "old" I did a double take. From there to Beacon Hill which is an ornate brick building covered hill with streets that are literally only 9 feet wide in some places. Charles Street is antique row and we had a mahvelous dinner at a French restraunt there called Torch. I highly recommend it. From there to Commonwealth Avenue which has huge brownstones on both sides and an incredible panhandle like park that runs its length down the middle upon which we found the bar that inspired the TV show Cheers which isnt anything like the film set but has a great gift shop and they play the theme song constantly. The actual Cheers has tiny little bars and has one in each of several rooms. From there to the Charles River and by this time it was getting dark so we strolled past a night softball game at this incredible field in the commons, a large beautiful lake, and home to bed. Wow said we. What an incredibly beautiful city. FRIDAY- The next morning, after breakfast we walked throughout the city again first walking through the gorgeous Back bay area with its ornate Brownstones and immaculate gardens. By the time we had walked the length of the area I was anxious to see Fenway park which is everything I had ever heard. The Yankees were in town so there was a crowd of New Yawkas jus' hangin out giving gas to anyone and everyone who walked by. So being the Giants fan that I am when they gave me shit I said "Good think that coward Clemens hides in the American league so he doesnt have to hit after he throws at sombodys head, he wouldnt be doing that in the National League". There was this deafening silence and ZERO retorts like they werent expecting that at all. Fenway by the way has the most amazing and huge souvenier store across the street from it and it was awesome and certainly the inspiration for our Pac Bell Park. Behind its famous "green Monster" left fioeld fence were these totally cheezy strip joints but we decided against having lunch there in spite of the midget who was enticing us to enter. On our way back to downtown we encountered this place called The Fens which is a large area of several acres where all kinds of organizations have each constructed a small garden and it is awesome. Little trails go every which way in this maze of beautiful flowers and plants by a river or wetlands. Then past the Berklee School of music which produces the musicians who play in the best symphony orchestras and the area has more top notch music supply stores than anywhere Ive ever seen . Newberry Street which has every store you ever heard of and many you havent. By the time we hit mid day we were really tired and ma dawgs was barkin so we hopped on the trolley which gives you a tour of the Freedom Trail and all over the places where the American Revolution freed us from these people oversees whose name escapes me now. I do recall they had a King who reminded me of our Colin except I dont think he knitted sweaters. It was great except that with all the construction there were tons of deisel fumes (diesel fumes were one thing I never tried in college) and trucks everywhere along the route and I really felt sorry for the driver. Finally we felt sorry for us so we disembarced and had dinner at a place that literally used to house the Company that the real John Hancock owned. Our table was literally right next to his safe so I opened it up and found no money left over inside but the anticipation was a rush in and of itself. The food was great. HUGE scallops and an incredible profiterol and coffee and we walked back to the hotel to get a good night sleep in anticipation of the next days fest. [end part 1] ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Sep 2001 01:47:17 EDT From: MDESTE1@aol.com Subject: Toppsfield 2001 Pt-2 - To Toppsfield The next day being Saturday we got our rentacar and following all the directions provided by Yahoo Maps we wended (New England is Huuuuuge on wending) our way up to Toppsfield. Now this was the first time that I began to get this creepy feeling. Its a question as per whether the road signs are inadvertently forgotten or whether they are not put there on purpose to frighten and or vex out of towners. Picture the Twilight Zone episode that begins with the mad man crashing through the front door collapsing on the floor of the small isolated Diner and you get some kind of idea of the New England Driving experience. For all the jokes about California freeways they are in fact designed by advanced engineers who use these things called "road signs". In New England they are designed by leprechans and you find your way with "spells" from the Book of Kells. You see this sign that says Danvers (for instance) and a turnoff that says Danvers and you take the turnoff and you are on a road lined with thick bushes on either sideand you are prevented from seeing anything but the roadway right in front of you and you go for about a half mile and when you come out of these bushes you have no idea which direction you are heading. I called this the Pinata effect. After you're through spinning the bystanders laugh at you as you as you try to regain your bearings. After being on the road not knowing which direction you have just gone in you finally come to a sign that says something like Ipswitch 5 miles and you havent seen a thing. Like "what happened to Danvers?". Freeway turnoffs in California have big white luminescent lines that reflect the headlights and guide you to the offramp. In new England there are no lines and the off-ramp just might be a hole in the hedge next to the road with a single yellow sign which you only see aftre you go through the hole in the hedge that points "that way" without any other clue and two ways (or three) you can go. Throughout the trip I dont think I guessed correctly once. Driving in New England is truly an Alice in Wonderland through the Looking Glass experience. I half expected to encounter a big catapiller on a mushroom with hookah going "I could send you this way but then you wouldnt be going that way" before disappearing entirely leaving only the grinning teeth. We stopped for directions after the Danvers turnoff blooper four times and the people were very kind and friendly but made comments like "Well its a little difficult to explain...." which I already knew. The turnoff to the hotel (which by demon luck happened to be on the "other" side of the freeway) required you to guess correctly twice since there was no other helpful hint like "Hotel over here" or "Sheraton to your right" then proceed to take the sign (Im not kidding) which said "Boston-South" but then immediately take yet another sign which said Route 97 East (or something) and then find a nearly unmarked path with no painted lines and take IT and know instinctively that you needed to go right on that road with the hotel obscurred from your view by tall trees. I did this loop three times until I finally exhausted all the other ways to go so just to take this turnoff took me about 30 minutes of wending. I collapsed like the Twilight Zone character at the front desk only to be met by the hostess who really was Irish with the heaviest accent I have ever heard and i was SURE that this was the person who had designed the turnoff. I finally get to the Sheraton exhausted, in trauma, and lay my head on the counter and lo and behold Im told our room isnt ready yet, but it WILL be. So off to Asharas we go. Now painfully aware of the need to follow the map, we do, and amazingly (in broad daylight) find Asharas house. It is a beautiful two story wooden shingled home amidst an incredible assemblage of trees. The back yard has no fences and with the adjoining back yards you have at least a 175 yard par three hole if you want to install one with a dogleg no less. The ambience is one of spacious forrestry and the smell is just the end. I cant say enough about this incredible back yard which is more like an area at a campground in Yosemite than someones back yard. On the other hand the legends of the lurking Mosqiitos was enough to make me stay inside like those who live on the Moors in England during Wherwolf season. So I never braved the backyard actually. I did vist the porch but was immediately attacked so i retreated white flag flying at the first sign of danger. In daytime however it is stunning and spectacular. When we arrived at Asharas I got to meet her for the first time and the JMDL experience was renewed once again. there was the Madame Queen Dolphin herself, as well as Wally Kairuz from Argentina, Lori Frye with whom I have had many communiques, Mags and Brei and Sal, Asharas big guy. The house is totally warm and spacious with a really cool den and other rooms totally outfitted in media and computer and entertainment devices with an upstairs that has many rooms. The words that describe this abode are warm and friendly. The final touches on the food prep were winding (as opposed to wending) down and soon enough we were on our way to the church in newberryport. It was a gorgeous day. Finding our way to the church was a relatively easy task, with the church being on the main street and all, and it was the only building that had more than one vehicle next to it. It was a grand white classic New England church with a stage and big windows and they had done a marvelous job of setting it up. There were all sorts of surrounding high-ceilinged wooden rooms to practice or warm up in and downstairs was a big kitchen in which food stuffs were asembled. Ashara had gone to the trouble of hiring a sound crew and a lighting assemblage and even had Christmas lights strung which during the day were ambivalent in terms of atmosphere but at night it was mystical and magical in the atmosphere it created we were later to find out was wonderful. All the performances were videoed as well and I would think that anyone who was there will acquire the entire video of the event. Its hard to even remember all that happened because you had some people playing their own set and you had the same people being brought back up to do harmony parts or other parts or group sing alongs and even people like Jimmy Stewart from Fort Myers impersonating Bette Midler impersonating Dr. Rene Richards with Woo Woo parts to songs on some songs. When the CD box set eventually comes out I unhesitatingly and highly recommend that all of you acquire it and feast your ears on some amazing stuff. The JMDL truly has some professionals within it and others who could be if they wanted to be. This was an event that went from Noon to 11 pm at night and never lost momentum and in fact gained some as it went along. Time flew as it does with all such experiences and then all of a sudden there was Bob Mueller the indefatigable Master of Ceremonies saying we all had to go home. Dinner was served somewhere in the middle. I will have to review the CD when it emerges but my recollections are as follows. Some might be out of order but thats how they come back to me. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Sep 2001 01:47:40 EDT From: MDESTE1@aol.com Subject: Toppsfield 2001-Part 4 -After the Church I had to write this as a special addendum. The time after the Church concert was truly special. It took some time to clean up and all and after that was finished the street was filled with festers all waiting for "clearance" from the big mahi mahi (if you know what I mean) to go from the church (all was cleaned up) to Asharas, We all piled into our respective vehicles some with garbage and some without. I was fortunate to have Bob Muller ride with me so we got to discuss the incredible day and evening of music. Atty Maes was still to happen tomorrow but there was this get together yet to happen at Asharas house that night. After such an incredible day you really dont want to let go. Its one of the magical things about the fests. You simply want to be with everyone and for the music to continue. The hits keep happening the momentum keeps building. So off we all went. Bob and I had a great rap about the various people and in fact he helped me remember all that had transpired so I could write the last part of this series on the church concert. Anyway we took the wrong turn off and at night the road system designed by the leprechans is particularly devious and so at some point we stopped in the middle of nowhere and its midnight plus 30 or something and having no idea where to go next we just stopped. A minute later this caravan of cars comes upon us and each filled with people we look at each other and go "Who else could this be" so without really knowing we followed this caravan and sure enough we go straight to Asaharas. people pile out and theres still much work top be done transporting all the concert left overs and equipment etc into the house. After a few minutes we all settled into the various rooms to continue the merriment. Believe it or not Ashara is prepared to dish out a chocolate mousse or something to the entire party and after which John van Tiel and I rinsed the dishes while we talked about Holland. In one room there is acoustic music going on and in the kitchen theres conversation, on the back porch theres a group feeding the mosquitos with their blood and in the front room is this stand up piano. This is where what I consider to be a truly remarkable thing happens which really makes these fests what they are. Unabashed unabashedness. One of the real treats of the fests is that there are lurking major tallents. They dont play at the events but they sit in the shadows with all their ability. Earlier last year I got to ride to Davis (2 hour drive) with Russel Bowden for Mary Graces Taylor Ham Sponsored Mini-fest and I could just tell there was spomething special there. Russel comes frrom a major tallented musical family from back east actually and he has sung in the San Francisco gay mens Chorus one of the very best vocal choirs in the country. I chided him because he will NOT play electric piano, only acoustic. What a howler. OK Russ here it is I demanded he take off the mask and finally I get to hear him. Hes an authority on opera and other fine music as well. Anyway oh my God what an immense player. Elton John, Cole Porter, you name it. We're talking Bobby Short or Elton Himself. I was in heaven. I sang Daniel with him and it was played just like Elton had enetered his body. On second thought he might like that (rimshot) ....ahem.....Russel you are the BOMB. Good grief this guy has got to be given a spot at the next fest or the virgin goes into the volcanoe. Seriously folks this isnt a marginal deal. Clark Kent has got to be led to the phone boothe. Are you listening Coyote Rick at Casa Allegre ?? Do I hear M-E-C-C-A 2002 ??? I spent the rest of the time just listening and trying to get some time sharing conversation with various people for some time after that floating amongst the rooms. Fests are famous for little parties going on in each room and you are always welcome at any or all. At some point I felt this exhaustion coming on and I tried to leave but Mike Paz hunted me down in the hall and forced me at bazooka point back into the house to play some more. We went to the back room and everyone was sitting in quiet mode as different people played. Victor did one of his songs, Gregg did an amazing song that he wrote I think, Yael did a song. Its all blurry. I do remember seeing Hell on the couch and someone handed me a guitar. Michael and I did Long Time Gone I did a Stephen Stills song 4&20 for her and its always nice to keep a promise. Hells a huuuuge CSNY fan and I told her if she ever came to a fest I would do a Stills song for her. Somehow I managed to escape the magnetic field tracktor beam that surrounded the house and I floated back home at the end of this perfect day. There was still tomorrow. ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2001 #385 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
