There are those like Jerry N. and myself who are big admirerers of Rufus' work and then there are those who find Rufus "Whine-right" a bit too much for them. Yes, His new album is T-Riffic. Not as much sounding as the cabaret-like themes of his first album, but definitely a winner. I would advise anyone who likes his records to see him live. Also, if you would like, Rufus always enjoys a fresh bag of jelly bellies, for my friend, Daman, through a bag up on stage (with an attached note) and about 3/4 of the way through the concert, Rufus ripped right through that bag. Oh my GAWD! Those post fest blues won't go away. I miss everybody too. I caught the earlier 5:00 flight(avoiding an hour and 40 minute wait at the airport) and got to the airport about 8:20 but I had to take the Marta train to my car and then drive an hour back to Athens. I turned on the radio and listened to Debussy "Image" which was kind of nice to drift into as I was still in a dreamy state. It truly was the most incredible weekend ever! I was at a family pool part and was talking to my nephew and his girlfriend (the ones who won the trip to the Grammy's last year.) I told them how excited I was to have tickets to Tori and Rufus. Rick's girlfriend said she had seen Rufus open for Lisa Loeb on Vegas 3 years ago and she thought both he and his piano were off tune and she hated him. I think he brings that kind of reaction. Duet with Victor on Ashara's deck Friday 2. Having the privilege of puttin' on a harmony with Ashara and ChuckE 3. Greg's rendition of All I Want - the point at which we all really woke up! 4. Mags and Bri giving me "life" which is something like yech backwards... 5. Dancing with Marcel to Michael Paz doing The Space Between 6. Dancing with Mags and Maggie, and then the quick and hilarious "exit, stage right" when they realized we were being taped 7. Talking with WallyK on the front steps 8. Snoozing in the church living room and waking to the smell of shrimp on the barbi 9. Singing with Bob and Victor on Friday 10. Getting lost on the way to the church and getting free lollipops and a sticker from some nice firemen, then having the courtesy shuttle almost run us down, and not really daring to look my rear view at Rose's distressed face (hi Rose!) 11. Claudia's set (thank you SO much for playing!) 12. Kate and Jeff - just incredible! And so amazingly nice too! 13. Amy's performance - and you were going to deprive us?! Talk about deep feeling! 14. Sharing the mic with Marilyn on sing-alongs - We HAVE to get you up there again next year so the rest of the JMDL can hear your lovely music!!! 15. Kakki - I wish we could have talked even longer. That was really heart to heart. You'll forever be in mine. 16. Yael - so sweet. Catching your smile across the stage on the sing alongs. You bring so much joy to your music. 17. Stephen from Vancouver - so touched by that final hug. I wish we could have spent even more time together. 18. Les noticing the Pierre (flawed as it was) during the sound check. Yes, that was specifically for you. Just wish I'd practiced :-) 19. John Van Tiel - you take my breath away! 20. All the phone calls, the sharing, the excitement, the (wee bit of) complaining and worry, with Ashara beforehand. What a truly incredible person. Maybe someday I'll be able to express how special you are to me. So, this is the first roll of snapshots. As others develop, I'll share them too. One thing keeps going through my head - "How can I possible tell all of you just how much you mean to me?" I need a lifetime of JoniFests, and even then I'd probably only get started. lots of love Anne ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Sep 2001 07:05:07 -0700 From: Leslie Mixon Subject: Joni Fest 2001 - Thanks for the memories The word that keeps spinning around in my heart and mind is collaboration. We all worked so well together, "...everybody was singing and dancing and sharing and having fun..." The warmth, and the welcome is beyond words. I want to thank Steve Polifka for inviting me to sing along with him, Claudia for blending her voice so beautifully with mine (singing those James Taylor songs on the drive to the train station will stay with me for a long time), Paz for accompanying me on "Way Over Yonder", Chris Marshall and Victor for the smooth and tight bass playing. And what can I say about "My Old Man." Steve Mixon has a heart as big as the mountains, and the brains and talent to go along with it. We're already talking about the songs we want to play next year. I'm sure we'll inspire some new friends to sign up along with us. Ashara, you are such an inspiration! Steve has already applied for a high tech job in MA with the hope that we can see you more than once a year (and continue giving you mandolin lessons!) Congratulations to Scott and Jody for buying their first New England home. We hope to be your neighbors as well. Gregg, it was a true pleasure to meet a new friend of spirit. You are such a genuine person with great guitar chops. Steve and I listened to your CD in the car and were blown away by your songwriting. We hope you make it out to the Central Valley of California so you can be our guest. Bob Muller, dancing close and slow with you made me feel like a teenager again. I look forward to our collaboration next year on "Cool Water," and yes, I will convince you to give "Chalk Mark In A Rainstorm" another chance... Chuck, thank you for inviting me to sing along on "Sweet Bird" and thanks for Jeff for seamlessly playing along on guitar. Chuck, next year Claudia and I have to accompany you on "The Gallery." Mr. Epstein, such a class act with a beautiful smile. My gift to you will be in the mail shortly. I'm grateful for the time we shared, please start practicing piano again. Mr. Van Tiel - a generous soul with a wealth of knowledge and mischevious grin. You're just plain lovable. Wally K., Steve and I talked about how much we enjoyed your set during the plane ride home, I'll never forget, "Amoeba, it was just a false alarm...." Anne, your voice is as sweet and warm as your hugs. It takes a lot of courage to be the first performer up on stage, you go girl! Mags and Brian show us how much fun it is to be in love, I wish there was more time to spend with you two... Oh my gawd, it's 7:00am and I have to be at work in an hour. Real quickly, Kay, Amy and Alison - I hope we can collaborate on some songs next year, I loved your singing. How about "Shadows and Light?" "Time, where does the time go, I wonder where the time goes..." It just seemed that there wasn't enough time to spend with all the people I wanted to get to know better. He was fantastic. I haven't felt so enthralled since Joni's last 2 tour shows. I brought him a CD of music from my friend Garrin Benfield, the musician, who he's met before at a party, though he hardly remembered, he was so wasted. He plays hard, and gets around, as Garrin says. The CD had a note and Garrin would like to be his opening act when he gets his own headlining tour, which surely he will soon. Rufus didn't remember Garrin, but drooled over his photo. It was cute. He's endearing and unique, and young, still forming his work. I can't wait to see him again here in California when he tours with Tori Amos. I'll be sure to bring some jelly bellies, thanks, he does sing about his obsession with them in his lead off song on the new album. Does everyone know what a wonderful guitar player you are? You blew me away! You Claud and Alison rocked! And I though all you did was run our little list! Claudia, I absolutely love you! What genuine joy comes across in your performances. Can't wait for the CD! Anne, you too were incredible. Your lyrics had me in tears. Beautiful stuff. Where can I get your CD? I noticed Ashara had one. Gregg, you cool cat you! The Cagno came, saw, and conquered. What sheer enegry and talent. Your version of "A Case of You" with Claud had the tears streaming down. It was brilliant and really touched me. Steve P. on keyboards is to die for! Did anyone outside the midwest know this? He is great and even nicer for allowing this no-talent singer to accompany him. FanfriggingTastic! I forgot to ask in the airport if you had anymore CDs, 'cuz I need a fix o' Steve! Les Ross, I already knew you were brill but glad that the rest of the festers got a taste. Sheer drama and the quietest moment of that rowdy day! Steve and Leslie, I want more! So glad I got to hear you both as our time in NYC was just too short. Steve is stupendous and he brings so much energy to the stage. Leslie you really nailed the Dawntreader and good for you to take up Maggie's challenge. Kay, thanks for my Strange Boy fix. Geeze, that sounded weird, but you know what I mean. Everyone loved your set! Kate and Jeff! You guys are great! I need your CD too! So much soul in your performance. I love the harmonies you create and your original stuff is wonderful. I AM SO NOT WORTHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know I am missing tons of performers and hopefully someone (Bob, Anne?) will post a set list to help me remember. So much fun and banter and good food that it was hard to keep track. Will write more when I have fully digested everything that occured. Great to meet all of you and wonderful to see those who I already knew. Saying goodbye was so hard and I know I missed a few of you that I really wanted to bid farewell to. :-( Thanks again Ashara, Heather, Maggie, Anne, Sal, Laurie, and Pippen. "Fan Dance" by Sam Phillips (Nonesuch / WB) 2001 Sam's new disc is dry (as usual), and almost sounds like an album of demo's. Some songs are very short and sound almost unfinished. The album as a whole is only 33 minutes long. Ultimately however, she's quite rewarding--with lyric's that are always intelligent and thought provoking. The best song is probably the single, "Five Colors." And the string (cello) arrangement by Van Dyke Parks on "Wasting My Time" sounds like a cross between The Beatles "Eleanor Rigby" and Bernard Herrmann's "Psycho" score. I also like her piano-based "Edge Of The World" as well as the title track. All in all, it's not as great as her "Martinis & Bikinis" album from 1994. More similar to 1996's under-appreciated "Omnipop." Anyway, I think her sound is unique and distinctive--and she remains interesting at the very least. "Life On A String" by Laurie Anderson (Nonesuch / WB) 2001 Probably better than the Sam Phillips, this is a great return to form for Laurie Anderson. It reminds me of her wonderful 1989 album "Strange Angels," with some truly incredible songs. If you're unfamiliar with her music, Laurie was (and is) a real ground-breaker in pop/avant-garde music--pioneering a new kind of music in much the same way Laura Nyro and our beloved Joni Mitchell did years ago. The title track is simply a knockout! "Pieces And Parts" is brilliant, and "One White Whale" is great too. "Dark Angel" features a lush, almost syrupy string arrangement (again by Van Dyke Parks), and "Here With You" is an instrumental featuring her own violin. All things considered, this is definitely one of her very best records. Highly recommended. For some reason, the 'production' on both this and the new Sam Phillips record reminds me of Nyro's recent "Angel In The Dark" in their unadorned, demo-like quality. "Vespertine" by Bjork (Elektra / WB) 2001 This record is exotic and beautiful, with gorgeous string arrangements by Vince Mendoza (who worked with Joni Mitchell on her "Both Sides Now" album last year). This is probably Bjork's finest hour. Her singing is better than ever, and the compositions and performances are utterly fascinating. My favorite songs so far are "Pagan Poetry," "Sun In My Mouth" and especially "Unison"--not to mention "Heirloom" and "It's Not Up To You." It's a rather consistent listening experience without any major clunkers, and much better than last years "Selmasongs" (the EP from her film "Dancer In The Dark"), which ambitiously tried to incorporate industrial music with show tunes. If you like lush, elegant music that's challenging and a little bit out of the ordinary, you'll probably like this. It's truly lovely and extremely original--unlike anyone else I know of. Anyone else heard these yet? If so, post some opinions... If you haven't heard "Both Sides Now" (not the song, but the CD of "standards"), just about every song on that one is sure to bring on a big boo hoo. But especially her new, older-but-wiser versions of her own "Case of you" and "Both sides now". Or, try "Magdalene Laundries" or "Not to blame" from Turbulent Indigo - if you really want to blub, and you get a chance to, you should hear Les from London's versions of these two. You may think it odd to hear a man singing, especially "Magdalene" but, once you hear Les's versions of these, you can really believe that HE is an unmarried girl, etc. I can't wait until these things are available...
