Hi everyone. It's early Saturday morning. I'm at home, getting ready to go back to Ashara's (only about 45 minutes away). I arrived mid-afternoon yesterday. Claudia was on the front steps singing, along with ChuckE and Yael. Ashara came bounding out of the house like a happy puppy to see me. Claudia treated us to a stunning rendition of Shawn Colvin's "Diamond in the Rough." Then Ashara, ChuckE and I went off to practice the Cheryl Wheeler song we're doing together. I finally went inside to greet more JMDLers. It was fantastic! (In no particular order... and I'll probably leave out some) Kate Bennet and her husband Jeff, John Van Tiel, Stephen from Vancouver, Leslie and Steve Mixon, Susan Guzzi, Les Irvin, Bob, Victor, then Paz, then (you must have heard the shriek from there) Wally arrived, Mags and Brian... oh my mind is going blank. so many good friends! Wally and I sat on the front steps and talked for a bit. Meanwhile ChuckE and crew sang at the piano. When we heard the strains of "Feelings" we knew it was time to go rescue them. We went in and all did "The Fiddle and the Drum." Then, of course followed that with "Both Sides Now." I have to admit to getting pretty teary-eyed during this, so I slipped out to the front door. [I'll just add that it was an extremely emotional day for me that started with some unpleasant and confusing medical surprises.] Claudia and John Van Tiel came out and hugged me. Then, there was a call from the shrimp peelers (bless them!) to be serenaded. So, Steve (what an amazing player), ChuckE and I went out to the deck with the book "Rise Up Singing" and picked songs like out of a hat, starting with "Pack Up Your Sorrows." I think Leslie joined us for that one too. We did a bunch of what I guess are "standards" for our generation. Some Dylan and Grateful Dead, for example. At one point, Victor and I did a duet, after which I said, gee we should form a duo, move to New York, play at the Night Owl... Then Bob came over and we did Amie. I'd have to say that was the most fun you can have with your clothes on - ha ha! Meanwhile, Paz had to air out the contents of his suitcase, because the shrimp spices spilled all over everything. Maybe we'll discover that Michael's secret shrimp recipe is the best mosquito deterrent:-) Then, I got to visit with Mags and Brian some more, then anyone who came by the table on the deck. Oh, Mags got her hair cut, and looks stunning! John Van Tiel is looking trim - I think he's been working hard for the Bob's Bod Look-Alike Contest. Patrick's hair isn't blond anymore (although he looks fantastic either way). Oh, and there's a HUGE martini glass on the kitchen counter with candy in it. Speaking of which, Kakki soon arrived, followed by Les Ross, who brought a bag of goodies, and Patrick. Shortly after that, it was time for me to come home to spend some time with Russ. (Like I said, long day with some nasty surprises. I'd tell you more, but it's like New England weather. Every time I go in to Dana-Farber these days I get a different story. I didn't like today's.) So, I'll leave here in about an hour or so. And I'll try to post tonight, or at least tomorrow morning to tell you all about today's events. lots of love Anne ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 01 Sep 2001 14:22:04 +0100 From: colin Subject: Re: a very early JoniFest report - long (njc?) well one thing's for sure-all the regular posters must be at the Fest!!!!! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Sep 2001 08:19:37 -0500 From: "Rob Ettridge" Subject: Re: Tori Amos NJC Well, rumour on the Tori sites is that she is releasing this album to fulfill her contract and escape eastwest/Atlantic. This seems highly plausible to me and makes me curious about any original tracks she has tucked away. I can just see her having an Ani di Franco style label. I often think it's a shame Joni hasn't done this. She certainly isn't too keen on record labels, but I doubt she'd like the idea of running a label either. If the label releases a Tori Greatest Hits, then I think this rumour will be near enough confirmed. Blair wrote: > Sounds like another bargain bin cd in a year or two...hahaha.. I agree that compilations should be avoided. Although there are a half-a-dozen or so, none of them are compiled well enough to do her music justice. Although her first album is truly unimprovable, anyone who likes this album really should dive in further, particularly the very similar follow up 'Show Some Emotion'. In my mind, to stop at the eponymous album is comparable to enjoying 'Blue' and not listening to 'For the Roses', let alone 'Hejira'. My personal favourites are the reggae-ish 'To The Limit' criminally now deleted and 'Me Myself I', which is just flawless. She had a run of dodgy album in the eighties - hmm, who does that remind me of? - only to come back with some of her best work like 1995's 'What's Inside'. The new album 'Lovers Speak', which I first heard about this morning(!!!) should be interesting after a 6/7 year hiatus. I wonder how the fest's going...? Some of the more party-inclined folks are moaning in an ecstasy of sweet regret (for actions of the night before) ....but I digress.. Topsfield is rocking with the joni-philes...and HOW!! Food, chatter and MUSIC abound in this charming historic New England enclave. Joni is definitely here in spirit. I expect her to materialize any second to help with the recycling. Off to La Cor de la Festa in Newburyport. Wish you were here. I was in no way suggesting stopping at the the JA album (which was actually her third, if you count the "Whatever's For Us" album she made with Pam Nestor, the second being Back To The Night); in fact, once JA had finished, I went straight to Show Some Emotion, which is also very lovely. I will go to To The Limit next. Personally, Me Myself I doesn't quite hit those heights, although All The Way From America is truly wonderful. Even her less-good works have a few great songs. The Key wasn't that great, but it did contain "Drop The Pilot", one of her biggest hits and an unusually up-tempo and irresistible rocker. By the way, Colin, agree with you about the shortage of traffic on the list! Spare a thought for us, folks, and raise a few glasses for the stay-at-homes... Raining Blood Take To The Sky Lust Leather Cooling Winter It's reassuring to hear Tori's voice soaring through the church in it's familiar way, especially since the new CD had me perplexed for a bit. Her voice sounds much more smooth in the live 'mix' than on the new CD. YAY!!! Cheers, Chris PS. I just bid and won in an auction for a promo copy of the new Carole King CD "Love Makes The World" which will be out Sept. 25th. I have a feeling it'll be mediocre, but as a big CK fan, I had to jump at the chance to have it early. Miss is a major secret to the general populace. They think her top 40 hits are her and they don't even begin to show who she is or what kind of a songwriter she is. She is like a sweet secret that only a few of us have discovered. I was lucky. My friend Phillip turned me on to her when I was just about to leave home for the first time. "Better Days and Happy Endings". To this day it is my favorite album of hers though they are all good except "Emergency" which sucked but I think the company put her up to that one. I love Joni, there's no denying it, but I am an even bigger MIssy fan. She touched me where no one else ever did. Strange, I listened to the song you mentioned a thousand times but never realized it was Joni and Laura she was talking about. Not at all familiar with Laura except hearing her name tossed around when I was digging Janis, my all time favorite. It is just like Melissa to give praise to someone else, like she did Joni in that song. That tune is also one of my biggest favorites. The bittersweet tone as she sings "what a fine time I'm having". Damn. I used to play Better Days constantly when I was in love way back when, so much that my lover hated her. The line in "happy endings" --"cause when it stops, I'll be gone". It did and I was. "I got eyes" and "this lady's not home today>" I got most of them in the bargain bin. What a talent, what a lady, what a friend. Here's to you Missy. Hey Ken, thanks for posting.
