I need that kind of sustenance in my life right now. As far as the Israeli-Arab conflict goes, I have no new comments or any that I wish to state anyway though I will say that a lot of Colin's comments do make a lot of sense. I was reading with interest the mention of Joan Armatrading. I am not familiar with her at all except for knowing her name but have never heard her tunes, Laura Nyro's either. Haven't heard any mention of Melissa Manchester. She has an entirely different style from Joni and Rickie Lee but has written some very fine tunes. Forget "Don't Cry Out Loud" which I loathed and Melissa herself did not care for. On some of her obscure albums, she has written some outstanding tunes. I have all of her albums and the girl of paisley who has turned into an elegant songstress has held me tight many times. The hit records are not any kind of indication of what kind of talent that she is. Check her out if you have not. I hope everyone is well. He truly was a great singer-songwriter! You might be interested to know that the Australian (well, he was born in Scotland and retains a strong Scots accent, but he has lived here for many years) folk singer-songwriter Eric Bogle has a fine version of Stan Rogers The Loch-keeper on his 1984 album When the Wind Blows. Also on that album is Bogles own achingly beautiful tribute to Rogers Safe in the Harbour. If you are interested in Rogers these tracks are well worth hunting down (or asking me for a tape :-). Love to all, Mark E ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2001 20:40:54 -0500 From: "Rob Ettridge" Subject: Tori Amos NJC I'll try to keep this short, as it's rather off-topic, and I'm a bit tipsy so probably not making much sense. I went to see Tori Amos tonight previewing her new album. In the end she only played three songs from the new album, but of these, she did manage to pick the albums highlights: Tom Waits' 'Time' and Lloyd Cole's 'Rattlesnakes'. This was her first public show since the birth of her daughter, so anticipation was rather high. It was held in an old church, which really added to the feel of the night - the Union Chapel, Islington, London. I couldn't bring myself to drink in a church. I'm not religious, but I have far too much Salvation Army doctrine inside me to get over that hurdle. I tried to convince myself that it was OK as it wasn't consecrated ground, but I found out later that it was still a fully functioning church, so I'm glad I held off. The guilt would be killing me. I did have the odd sea-breeze backstage afterwards, but that doesn't count, does it? Highlights were Cooling, which I haven't heard before live, and the ever-chilling Me and a Gun. The beauty of the architecture - one of the finest churches in London - unfortunately did nothing to aid the acousics as most of the sound disappeared into the roof, and Tori's trademark low notes were reverberated to the point of distortion. I had an access all areas pass, and had been promised a meeting with her later, but two hours and several drinks later nothing happened - though I did get a CD signed. Sorry if this has been a bit of a ramble. Rob _____________________________________________ Free email with personality! Actually, I'll be preparing for a dinner party to celebrate my 10th anniversary with my sig other. I'm having to go to some financial extremes to secure my tix for the show here in Boston (Oct.15th), as the show sold out while I was waiting for the TeleCharge website to work (TeleCharge SUX!!!; and with all the kvetching about TicketMaster and their charges and policies, I've never had a problem with their equipment letting me down!) - anyway, I'm still going to see the show..it's just going to be expensive... "Rattlesnakes" is definetly one of the stand out tracks on the disc, which I've had for several weeks now. It's taking me a long time to start warming up to it, as it lacks a lot of those little Tori 'flourishes' that make her music pretty. This CD isn't very pretty and, at first, I found it very hard to listen to. Thankfully, it's getting better each time. What she did to 10cc's "I'm Not In Love" still has me devastated - one of my faver cheese tunes from the 70's (I especially loved the way it was used in Virgin Suicides) - and she really ripped a new asshole into Neil's "Heart of Gold", barely recognizable in it's new incarnation. What she does with Eminem's "'97 Bonnie & Clyde," however, is pure genius. It'll be interesting to see what the rest of the world has to say once the disc is officially released in a few weeks.
