This is the fifth night of seven straight. More info: http://www.jmdl.com/articles/docs/690826lat.cfm 1970: Joni plays on the fourth day of the "Isle Of Wight Festival" at the East Afton Farm, Godshill, Isle of Wight. From Wally's Bio Page: "When Joni came out on stage, the size of the audience amazed her. She told them 'It looks like they're making "Ben-Hur" or something!" All through her hour-long set, she had to deal with the noise of the rowdy and agitated crowds, and the frequent and distracting sound of small airplanes taking off. About two-thirds of the way through her song "Chelsea Morning" she stopped and told the audience "I don't feel like singing that song very much. Let me play you one on the piano.'" Randy Remote: I was there and remember her performance was marred by a noisy helicopter flying overhead, which Joni could neither see nor hear. This resulted in 100,000+ people booing, jeering and shouting "go away" at the helicopter. Sadly, Joni thought the boos were aimed at her and started to cry. Ian Scott: That helicopter incident is particularly significant when you consider that the festival was the biggest live entertainment event in the history of the world: roadies who worked at both were unanimous that it was bigger than Woodstock. Now, the impression that I get from all publications is that there was some hostility between the crowd and Joni that day. This is ABSOLUTELY not true. I was sitting inside the arena and in a good position to feel the general mood of the crowd, and I can assure you that the only hostility was directed toward the helicopter pilot flying overhead and NOT at Joni. 95% of the crowd did not even notice the Yogi Bear incident(he had no mike and was not centre stage) and more than 99% had no sympathy for him. By the time Joni struck into "Big Yellow Taxi" the helicopter had gone and everybody was listening to Joni. 1986: From Wally's Bio Page: "A Showtime series "Coast to Coast" hosted by Herbie Hancock premiered [today]. Joni was a guest on that first show for a jam session with Herbie, Bobby McFerrin, Wayne Shorter, David Sanborn, and Larry. The two songs they jammed on were Joni's compositions "Furry Sing the Blues," and a pepped-up latin-flavored version of "Hejira." Curiously enough, it features Sandra Bernhardt. So far there have been two shows, and so far Joni has been mentioned on each. Last night, Sandra and Chrissie Hynde waxed enthusiastic about the Joni (and Chrissie mentioned what a fine guitarist she is). Tonight Sandra and Boy George said good things about Joni; Boy George said he would even mix a Joni song free (or for free). I'm afraid I'm going to have to keep watching to see if this wonderful trend continues. Even without the Joni content, though, I'm enjoying her show. - -------------- You've got to shake your fists at lightning now You've got to roar like forest fire You've got to spread your light like blazes All across the sky Joni Mitchell ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2001 09:34:13 +0100 From: "Paul Castle" Subject: Re: Stan Rogers Brian Gross wrote > (while typing this, it occurred to me that if Stan were still alive, he > would likely be among our numbers here, part of the family. ~~~) > > brei Thanks for posting the lyrics - I found this in an 1978 interview with Stan by DJ, John McLaughlin, at Mariposa ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > Stan: "So Blue" was written on the Ocean Limited, > between Montreal and Halifax - we set it up as a > sort of take-off on Joni Mitchell with Tom Scott's LA > Express - > John: Oh gawd! - > Stan: That kind of thing seemed to suggest itself on > the train - and there's a line in there, "I want to listen to > Joni Mitchell on the radio and make love.." > John: To Joni Mitchell? > Stan: Oh, no, no no! > John: Sorry. I remember buying Rickie Lee's first album back in 1979. At that time I thought she was good, but no match for Joni or Laura Nyro or Tom Waits. Since then, thanks to the generosity of Mark D. and my great friend Ric Welch, I've learned to appreciate the art of Rickie Lee. I've also read and re-read Rickie Lee's Rolling Stone interview in which she disses Joni quite badly. Mingus hadn't even come out yet, and here was Rickie Lee criticizing it. For many years, that pissed me off. It doesn't any more. After all, so many great songs have been written by insecure people. Rickie Lee also did her best in that Rolling Stone interview to bring attention to Joan Armatrading. I don't understand the neglect of Joan Armatrading, one of the greatest guitarists ever, any more than I understand the neglect of Laura Nyro. np. I think the song you're looking for, Mark, is called "Something Cool", and is on many a live performance recording (check the mp3 section of her website). Actually, anyone who likes RLJ should be aware of this if you're not already; the RLJ site, run by Rick herself, has an awesome mp3 section featuring MANY of the more popular RLJ boots, downloadable song by song for .75 cents each. For the record, RLJ's problems with coheence, drugs & alcohol etc., are something that seems to wax and wane. Some of you may recall the review I posted last winter of her Boston performance and how sad that was for me (and those of you that read it...). As far as the 'Ghostyhead' affair, the one time I met RLJ was just outside the side door entrance to the Paradise here in Boston just before her performance was to begin on the 'Ghostyhead' tour. When pressed (she didn't want to stop and deal with me, and this time I was unattractively soused!), she said that her new CD was exciting to her because it was indeed different...that she souldn't keep on doing the same thing regardless of how her core fanbase felt about it. She now says it's a recording of prayers, and the newer live versions of the songs she's still doing from 'Ghostyhead' sound better now than they did at first...a little more organized. Cheers, Chris, just having won a 'Court & Spark' promo poster for an outrageous auction price...but still pleased about it. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2001 10:32:19 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Joni content If I have to think too much about this, I just can't do it. I don't know is I will have time to post tomorrow night before i leave. I am looking forward to seeing everyone from the past fests and all the virgins (you are gonna love THIS). To the rest of you wonderful people, be well also and wish you could all be here (mostly just to see Ashara squirm with 800 listers hanging in the kitchen). It is one of my top 10s. At the time it came out in 1986, I lived in Huntington Beach, CA, and there was a great radio station that played the entire album and an interview with her (damn, don't I wish I had a tape of that!)... When talking about this song, I remember she said something along the lines of she and all her siblings are named with "J" names and then their parents had one more child and named her Bernadette. All the children rebelled because it broke the pattern of "J's" and the parents renamed the child with a "J" name. So I believe it is kind of a song relating to that lost little Bernadette soul as well as the Joan of Arc theme. Sighing again at the huge amount of ridiculous trivia that resides in my head, but smiling because people like you actually find things like this as interesting as I do. She has also sent me some Kiwi music in the past and brought a couple more fantastic Shona Laing CDs for me this time - she has impeccable taste in music! I'm so glad she was able to make this trip over. One of the first things I showed her were several photos of Jonifests past and she immediately recognized you in the pics from Pittsburgh. We both were lamenting that you couldn't be with us this year and were raving on about your beautiful voice! I know you will be with us in spirit (and hopefully in person next time! ;-) Thanks for the good wishes. I have to jump in here to respond to a comment I find rather silly (and I'm not meaning to imply negative about the originator of the comment)...anyway, the comment was something like Shawn Colvin just had another baby so she's not gay...please!...I know lots of lesbians who have babies and gay men who father or adopt children! I thought we were waaaaayyyyy past that...I have no idea whether Shawn is gay and don't really care, but havin' babies is not an indicator of sexual orientation. Everyone have a nice Labor Day weekend...
