Just last night I had some friends over for dinner. I can't remember what the conversation was about, but I said something had reoccured. All of my friends know my grammar sucks and someone corrected me saying I should have said "recurred". Of course I said "No, Joni has a song called "The Reoccuring Dream" so it *must* be right". She is the only person I stood in line for many hours to get tickets for...this was when she was playing a small theatre here in SB & she was at the height of her career...tickets sold out fast. I believe it was the concert before the concert in San Diego where she got a really bad review for being sooooo out of it. After that I think I heard she got the message & cleaned up her act. Actually I thought they were great that night...a little loose yes, but still great. She & the band sure drank a lot of... J&B? Someone in the audience handed them a bottle & they drank it up too! After the concert we went down to our local hang to hear some friends & some of Rickie's band showed up to jam, but without Rickie. I ended up talking to Sal (who was at one time her boyfriend...it sounds like he is still in the band). We were talking about how nice Santa Barbara was & I told him he ought to take a ride up into the mountains to see the view from there. Oh no, he said, mountains make me nervous...(in a thick jersey accent). LOL. Years later I was at a Bruce Hornby concert, sitting at a table with a bunch of friends & there was an empty seat next to me. After the show started, the venue manager showed a lady in a red coat to the seat beside me. I glanced over & it was Rickie Lee! Apparently was going to join Bruce later in his second set. It was too loud to say anything to her so I waited until the break but she left to go backstage before I had a chance to say whatever dumb thing I might have said to her. But that was cool...sitting next to Rickie Lee watching the concert! Not as cool as dancing with Joni ala Paz, but still pretty cool.... Okay time to get my act together to get ready for Boston... PS, someone mentioned her song Company...love that song.... ******************************************** Kate Bennett www.katebennett.com sponsored by Polysonics www.polysonics.com Discover the Indies at Taylor Guitars: http://www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/bennett.html ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2001 14:37:34 -0400 From: dsk Subject: Re: John Kelly Catherine McKay wrote: > >... If you do a text search on his name, it's the first one that pops up. Interesting stuff in there about the East Village back then, too. Here are a few paragraphs about John and Joni: Mitchell has seen Kelly perform three times. A couple of years ago, when she turned up at Fez, an eclectic venue beneath the trendy Time Cafe, she laughed, she cried, she clapped, she sang. She would have bought the T-shirt had Kelly been selling them. "The whole place knew she was there at the back, so the electricity that night was palpable. It was one of the hardest things I've ever done. My hands were shaking. It was very trippy and very difficult and, ultimately, a great success." Mitchell was full of admiration and encouragement for Kelly, giving him a dulcimer that he now uses on A Case Of You. - ---------- During the show he talked about the TNT Tribute, saying he had not been invited to perform there (and had been doing a show then on Broadway), but was asked to do some of Paved Paradise at the party held afterwards at the China Club. He said no one was listening to him and that it was hard to keep going when people were so scattered and noisy, and then he looked up and saw Joni and Goldie Hawn standing four feet in front of him. He had the dulcimer Joni had given him years before and at the party she signed the back of it with a "Joni loves John" inside a big heart. He held it up so we could see. It was big and in black marker and there were lots of Joni swirls in it. All of us in the audience "aahhhh"ed. It was sweet. She came bearing several absolutely beautiful gifts from home (you Jonifesters are in for some treasured items from her). After some time in the pool and a nap she was ready to go out on the town last night. I drove her up Laurel Canyon where we had dinner and a look at the old Jim Morrison house (now sold and partially remodeled with 20 ft. totem pole removed and taken by the seller). Then we went to a place I've heard raves about the past year but never got around to going - The Joint. It is truly a little dive joint smaller than my apartment but ohhhhh my what surprises lurk within! Every Monday night there is a free jam with some of the most legendary musicians around. Jack Tempchin - writer of most of the Eagles best songs; Terry Reid - one of Graham Nash's oldest friends and an incredible vocalist from the U.K. who opened for the Stones, Cream, Clapton and more back in the day; Waddy Wachtel - guitar phenom who has played with everyone, especially Stevie Nicks for years; Bernard Fowler, longtime vocalist with the Stones; Phil Jones - drummer for Tom Petty; and a guy who simply goes by the name of "Rick the Bass Player" who has played with Joe Walsh and Neil Young over the years. Holy Shite!! They knocked us out!! Played songs from the Beatles, Yardbirds, Stones, Eagles, Neil Young, Jimmy Clift and more. They were unfreakingbelievable. The audience was mostly locals who are regulars and know they got quite a deal going in the neighborhood. They were very friendly to Hell and I and expect to see us back every Monday from now on ;-) Surprise guests show up all the time to sit in - Johnny Rivers twice in the past month (oh I've GOT to see him!); and George Thorogood and Michelle Phillips a few weeks ago. They said Nash shows up sometimes, too. No cover, no valet charge and $4 drinks - these are people most certainly doing it for the love of it. I put this on my must see list for the SoCal folks and visitors. So Blue (On board the Ocean Limited near Montreal, March 1976. With apologies to the L.A. Somewhere back behind the darkness lies The City on the Sea Gone already with a sleep stuck in between I left so much behind to grow. So much, too soon, but even so... She sways along the aisle again Crazy woman, dancing on a train, so hungry, so alone, and so blue. Cranky people do their morning jerks and the coffee bar has only tea And somewhere up ahead beyond the day, there's a lady keeping warm for me She's a mighty hand inside a silken glove I've known it a while, and I can't get enough I want to listen to Joni Mitchell on the radio And make love.... A crazy lady on a daylight train is dancing for free But everybody here just watches trees go by She knows a bit of what this train can feel. Once in reference to the fact that the viewer is getting great entertainment on A&E "As Joni Mitchell said it, For Free." She later said she'd taken a Hejira to Europe recently. Then during the interview with Chrissie Hynde, they brought up Joni as one of the few guitarists who is "as good as the guys." Chrissie said Joni was an inspiration, and Sandra professed her love of Joni once again. Coast Tour (NJC) One of my favorite artists (local or otherwise) is attempting what I believe is his first tour, so I thought I'd pimp him a bit. Jason Webley is a quirky young songwriter with extremely dry wit and a deep gravelly voice. He comes off as sort of a Tom Waits character (he even has the hat), but his music is verrry different. He plays a fantastic accordion, and percussion is in the form of plastic liquor bottles with pennies inside. He excels at drinking songs, but a palpable rage is never far below the surface. He writes a lot about the tyranny of Time, and even had a show a couple of weeks ago where everyone brought old clocks and watches and we smashed 'em. Audience participation is always encouraged, and things generally get a bit theatrical. He is one of Seattle's consummate buskers, and I actually discovered him in front of Pike Place Market one day several years ago. It continually blows my mind that he remains such a wonderful secret as he's one of the strongest performers I've ever seen. I was a young acolyte at St. Anne's Episcopal - now buried under the Century Freeway here in Los Angeles. My personal hero, role model, idol at the time, and five or so years my senior, Senior Server Greg Hernandez (I started wearing red socks due to Greg's influence) and his way-to-cool older half-sister Debbie DeVore had three tickets to Hair. One Sunday over cookies after church, they suggested I tag along. Was I impressed. The big kids were going to Hollywood. In a car, with Debbie and Greg, Hollywood, a hippie show. They wanted me to go and I was beside myself. YOU DID NEED PARENTAL CONSENT. My parents flatly refused, but were ignorant to Debbie's amazing forgery skills. I was on my way the next Saturday night, on the pretense of going to a movie and to hang out with other church kids -- luckily Mom and Pop never put two and two about the dates together. I guess I was about 14? Maybe younger? It was early in the performance at the Aquarius Theater. They picked me up at the door of our long, low, and lovely Bixby Knolls home. I remember what I was wearing. Very wide striped cream colored cords with bells, a paisley button down collar shirt, and wing tips with red socks, hair parted on the side, slicked with just enough Dep. I thought I looked HOT. Maybe for the Sound of Music in its twentieth week of play at the Crest. You can take the boy out of Bixby Knolls...They laughed and the best they could do was put me in a purple tie dye T-shirt (way too big) and a pair of beach thongs someone left in Debbie's now infamous VW. The show was amazing. NUDE! I had never seen a nude body but my own and my little brother's. The nude scene was at the end of act one. Everything after that is a blur. We danced on stage at the end. I felt like such an adult. It was wild. Well, Mom and Pop found out about our little scam after comparing notes with Greg and Debbie's folks. I was grounded for a month, they were grounded even longer for corrupting me, but it was worth every lonely moment in my TV-less seclusion. Fast forward some years ahead. There was a revival on stage at the Old Vic in London. This must have been 1993 or 1994. Brad and I scored tickets through the concierge at the hotel where we were staying in the West End. I really saw the show this time, and heard the music. It was amazing all over again. It felt like an instant replay of that evening so many years ago. I was invited to see the Los Angeles production with Sam Harris and Steven Weber but declined. My memories of Hair are too precious to risk. Peace, Man. I started this thread in a grumpy mood , but now I'm starting to think more deeply and enjoy it! Actually I more or less agree with you. If you had car trouble which went away and then one morning the car wouldn't start again, you could say it re-occured. But 'recurring nightmare' is used so commonly in british english it's almost a cliche. For some people it's being naked in company, or standing up to give a speech and having no notes. By the same token, I would think a recurring dream would be one you have over and over and over again. Etymologically they both come from the latin 'currere', to run, but 're-currere' to run again, had already been glued together in middle english. Occur is 'ob-currere', ob- meaning 'in the way'. So, I suppose re-occur is strictly, to run in the way again. If you think etymology is a good guide to usage, which I don't! Rob - ------- jerry notaro - 12/8 2 cents from a former old maid English teacher: recur - referring to somethings that happens on more than one occassion, no matter when or how many times. re-occur - it happened once, and has now happened once more. Jerry - ------ and me, patrick leader, 12/8 >****, several have made the case very well that there are two different meanings here. When I was in California my sister and I looked on her Microsoft Bookshelf CD. Reoccur was not in the Dictionary Module, but it was in the Thesaurus Module. And there was a synonomous phrase that EXACTLY expresses reoccur, and definitely not recur. The phrase was "show up like a bad penny". My example of going into remission and hoping that the cancer doesn't reoccur; Rob's similiar example regarding car trouble; these are clear examples that demonstrate why people have been using the word and I think you're showing a certain amount of tone deafness pretending there's no difference. The latinate roots of the words are different, re - currere vs. re - ob - currere; and the second one again expresses exactly what I'm saying: reoccur means to happen again after some interval or interruption. I prefer my language unembalmed. Buffington" Hello Marianne: Thank you so much for your very generous offer to support Jonifest by buying raffle tickets. I became the raffle princess because I wanted to help our sweet and generous Ashara lighten her load a bit. But I sorta fucked it up. I am really nervous to tell all of you this but ...when I announced the raffle, I should have sent it to the Yahoo site where those attending the fest receive messages. Instead, I sent the raffle notice to festers AND non-festers. The raffle idea did not take on a life of its own until very close to the fest and by then there was no time to really organize it except for fest goers. More importantly, Ashara would have to take care of all the checks and then mail prizes out if a non-fester won the prize and that woman has toooooo much to do already. So this year the Raffle is limited to festers. BUT If you and any others send checks to Jim Johanson for $10.00 or more, you are guaranteed to be sent a very special gift in the giveaway. (Ashara swears it is soooo fabulous). Not only are you guaranteed a nice gift but you help keep this site up and running. None of us want to lose this site and it costs money for Jim to do this for all of us. So if you could see it in your hearts to make out those checks directly to Jim and mail them to Ashara it would be a most gracious thing to do. So Marianne...art chef... Please accept my apologies for getting things confused. You know, you try to get a lawyer to do things and we just fuck things up. LOL But I hope you will send your hard earned money to Jim. After all, the raffle money was going to be donated to Jim for our site anyway. My daughter is one year older than Aliyah is. There's a mixture of joy that she was able to do what she loved, and sadness that her life was cut so short in such a gruesome way. I think many of us felt like she should have more time to be here on this earth. She was right on the verge of superstardom. Aliyah was scheduled to appear in sequels 2 and 3 of the Matrix. I feel the same sadness for Buddy Holly and Richie Valens. If I am not mistaken, they were at the same point in their careers as well. I know there is a reason for everything. I will just have to have faith that one day, I will have the wisdom to know. (JMDL) The tv special that you mentioned was on the TNT cable network and was entitled, appropriately, "TNT All-Star Tribute To Joni Mitchell". It's available as a stereo VHS dub, free. (Write off list for details.) Shawn Colvin was singing with Mary Chapin Carpenter. Colvin just had another baby so she's not gay. Shawn did seem to enjoy Mary Chapin's company on stage that night though. ANYWAY!! Don't know what small show in LA you're referring to although I'm guessing the Gene Autry Theater one, but I thought that was in NYC? If she told a story about being a cowgirl while the boys were Roy Rogers, it was the Autrey show. There's an audience audio-only of this show. Or maybe you caught the CBC's Much Music appearance, which was a small show in downtown Toronto? If the backdrop was a cornfield, and Joni was drinking saki, it was the Much Music show. This show was built for television so it seems more likely that you saw this show. There is a wonderful, complete, widely circulated (for free) video for this performance. Write again.
