Years before that back in Lubbock Texas I had a very dear friend named Jeff who originally turned me on to her but I wasn't evolved enough at the time to understand it all. Then, I found Blue. Then Court and Spark, and then For the Roses. Have found that most cannot grasp what Joni tells us, or do not care, or are just not there. Now, here in physical and real oblivion, I long for those days and those folks with whom I shared those things and found this site and I am very happy to see that I am not alone. Joni helps me through the days, and the nights, and the forever. Of course, I do not have to expound on her virtues here. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Aug 2001 20:47:21 EDT From: Olivercrum@aol.com Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2001 #362 God Give Me Strength is a song Linda Ronstadt could sing the ....out of! That is not what you said. You were talking about love after the fact, after someone had been loved or was being loved. I said nothing about the stated love of which I wrote being romantic though that was surely a part of it, but most certainly not limited to that. And besides, does it matter? Your love is conditional, mine is not. The following message is in a pop up window on the Cowboy Junkies web site. "We ask that if you are a fan of the band that you please don't buy it," reads the message. According to the note, the band was not contacted and told of the album's imminent release, nor were they consulted on track selections and cover art. Apparently RCA/BMB is releasing a Cowboy Junkies greatest hits compilation without even telling the band about it. The following comes from Cowboy Junkies - Greatest Hits Sometime this month RCA/BMG will be releasing a "greatest hits" compilation. We have absolutely nothing to do with this release. We have not been consulted about any details, from the track selection to the artwork, and were not even given the courtesy of a phone call to let us know that this release was being scheduled. This release is a huge insult to us and we ask that if you are a fan of the band that you please don't buy it. All of the tracks on this compilation are available on our other studio releases, which are available through the Junk Store. If you must have these specific tracks in this specific order then: find them on the Internet, download them for free and burn them on to a CD....you have our blessing. - - the Cowboy Junkies ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Aug 2001 18:05:57 -0700 From: "Brenda J. It's right there next to the clause that pays an artist nothing for record club sales and no royalties for more than 10 songs on a CD. And the 5% breakage clause that is still standard, left over from the days of shellac 78's. Unfortunately, new bands have no leverage power, and are forced to sign oppressive contracts or walk. This time I've found a Promotional Copy of "Mingus" in the local used record store. Okay, yeah, there are a few crackles but vinyl does some things better than the CD's limited specifications allow it to do. (www.stereophile.com) So, let's look at what we left behind when we entered the CD age. There's an enhanced liveliness to her vocals that I don't remember hearing on my regular issue LP version (although I loved the music!). This copy presents her dynamic range better than anything I've ever heard except maybe my Promo Copy of "For The Roses". (Are you there, Running Water?) When she whispers, it just sounds like a whisper. This is hard to describe. It does not sound like a "recording" of a whisper. It sounds like a lack of compression, (Randy?) so I'm thinking that the Promos were made from lower generation tapes. (Technospeak: Short signal paths sound better. See "The Trinity Session" by the Cowboy Junkies. Hi Mark! I'm seeing Margo on Saturday night- woo hoo!) You can easily hear her breathing in places and the cymbals sound much better than I remember on my standard issue. Another example is at the end of "Sweet Sucker Dance" when Jaco is playing his repeating figure. On all other versions I have, the band smears into the bass as they take turns doing counterpoint, (is that the right word?). Everyone's part is clearer here. This aliveness is also evident in the snap of the brushes on the hi-hat on the same track. In "Dry Cleaner From Des Moines", the cymbals of the tambourine and the horns breathe better. Significantly though, the real joy isn't analytical. It's just that this copy ________________________________ gets out of the way of the music ________________________________ better than my CD copy. Maybe someday "Mingus" will be available with this kind of quality in a premium digital format like DVD-Audio for $30.00 list. It's not a given though. Who's to say if the 30 year old two track master is in the right hands, and if it was stored correctly? What if they decide to put Shorter in the rear channels of a 5.1 mix? Or have him swirling around the room at the end of "Dry Cleaner"? [Hey, "Wayne Swirled"! Hi David!] For now, I guess I'll just have to make do with this wonderful vinyl for $2.99. :) Joan and me look up. There's a sign up on the awning. It says, ' **USED VINYL** swings hard! Labels usually only consult the artists for these types of releases if they want to maintain a good relationship or if they want to add new songs or B-sides that don't fall under the contract period. Cowboy Junkies recorded for RCA, so RCA owns the masters and can do with them whatever they like. Aimee Mann has a case with respect to some of the songs which do not fall under her contract. Hip-O is owned by Universal which bought Geffen and therefore owns the masters to the work she recorded for Geffen. If she proceeds with her lawsuit she will probably be successful in getting them to remove the songs which Universal doesn't own. I found a page of a kindred heart that some of us may recognize as belonging in the chest of many jmdlers. Here's Lisa's story: **** http://www.arends-sons.com/~amyo/lisa/joni.html **** Twenty years ago I met the singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell when she came to my hometown of Minneapolis on tour. At the time her career was somewhat in eclipse - her folkie heyday had ended in the mid-seventies and she was in a transitional, experimental period, collaborating with jazz artists like Charlie Mingus. Though she had yet to be introduced to a new generation, there were diehard fans enough to pack the Minneapolis auditorium where she performed. A friend and I were lucky enough to secure front-row center seats for the greatest live concert I have ever seen. After the concert a small crowd of fans mingled outside, hoping to catch a glimpse of the singer as she left the auditorium. I noticed a friendly-looking middle-aged couple standing near me and struck up a conversation with them. It turned out that they were the aunt and uncle of one of the guitarists in her band. They were waiting for their nephew and told me that Joni had left already and mentioned the hotel she and her entourage were staying at. The next morning I went to the hotel and hung around the lobby, hoping for a glimpse of my idol. I gave a tip to a bellhop and asked him to pass her a note I had written to her expressing my admiration and thanking her for the wonderful concert the night before. A short time later a handsome dark-skinned man came down to the lobby. I recognized him as Joni's percussionist and also her boyfriend at the time. "Are you the one who sent Joni the note?" he asked me. I said yes. "Joni really liked that note," he said. "You ought to go up and see her." Then he told me her room number! On the way up the elevator the hotel manager stopped me and asked me where I was going. I've never been much of a liar. "Up to the 13th floor," I replied. "To see someone in Joni Mitchell's band." Technically this was true. He let me go. It seems wildly improbable now that so many people were helping me in my quest to meet my heroine, but these were the days before John Lennon's murder and the other tragedies involving deranged fans. There was a wall of privacy around celebrities at that time, but it was not as impenetrable as it no doubt would be now. I got off the elevator and walked down the hallway with a madly thumping heart. The doors to her suite were open. As I approached the doorway I saw her with her back to me, sitting at a card table, wearing a beret and eating fried eggs and toast! As I tapped on the door and she turned, I could see that her boyfriend had been mistaken, that of course she didn't want some overly motivated fan coming to her hotel room at 9 A.M. But I was too transfixed to leave. She was polite and asked me to please wait in the lobby and she'd be right down to meet me. After an hour or so back in the lobby I realized she wasn't coming down. I went down to the parking garage to see if she had left the building, but no, there was a bored-looking limo driver standing next to the entryway. We sat talking while I kept one eye glued to the elevator. He never asked me what I was doing there. Sometime around 2 PM the elevator doors opened and out came Joni Mitchell. She was so imposingly beautiful with her long crimped golden hair, her sculpted cheekbones, her leather jacket and her guitar. She didn't seem surprised to see me still waiting, but she must have taken pity on me, because she was quite accomodating and posed for several pictures, including this one (as seen below), taken by the trusty limo driver! I was in such a tizz after this encounter that I couldn't eat for a month. I look back and laugh at what an intrepid idiot I was. I woke up that morning determined to meet my idol, and it never occured to me that I might not. I was 20 years old then; now, at 40, I can't imagine going to so much bother just to meet someone. And I am sorry that I disturbed Joni's privacy. Her music continues to mean a great deal to me, though I rarely listen to it anymore, mainly because I heard it so many times as a girl that it's a permanent part of my psychic landscape. I'm glad I had the chance to meet her for those few dazzling moments. ********* ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Aug 2001 02:04:39 -0300 From: "Wally Kairuz" Subject: august 24!!!!!!!! njc helga dearest, you are my first and only norne. come back to me. i love you happy birthday!!!!!!!! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Aug 2001 03:06:39 -0400 From: "denknee" Subject: Laura Nyro poster (njc) I understand there are a number of Laura Nyro fans on this list.
