In my head it basically says 'you're ain't >exactly pretty, your bod ain't so hot and you're not the brightest >light bulb on the Christmas tree but I love you anyway'. If it had >even that little glimmer of humor in it, it might not be so bad. But >I find the melody, though very beautiful in & of itself, to be very >maudlin, as if the person singing actually pities the object of their >affection. It just seems that the lyricist feels very superior to the >person they love and feels the need to reassure them. Kinda >unhealthy, I think. Now I know the song says 'don't change a hair for >me, not if you care for me' but couldn't there have been at least one >positive thing to say about this person? You're sweet. You're kind. >You have a wonderful sense of humor. You make other people feel good >about themselves. In the seldom heard verse of "My Funny Valentine," the singer does say severa l positive things about her loved one: he has good intentions, is "noble," "truthful, sincere." Even in the well known refrain, he is "sweet" and makes her heart smile. Anyway, the singer's disparaging comments pertain mostly to the cosmetic, and are sung with apparent sweet intent. The Hart lyric is a modern paraphrase of Shakespeare's sonnet "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun," which takes similar notice of the love object's physical faults, even much more critical. The key to both texts is the last couplet of the sonnet: "And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare As any she belied with false compare." Both singers embrace the reality oin another Hart lyric, "My Romance," the singer eschews all the cliched trappings of storybook love -- no "moon," no "blue lagoon," no "twinkling stars" or "soft guitars." The singer is "wide awake," and realizes that his "romance doesn't need anything but you" (and by implication, "just the way 'you' are," Billy Joel, Shakespeare, etc.). It's interesting to note, by the way, how Lorenz Hart's personal life informed nearly every lyric he wrote. He had mild dwarfism (4' 9" with an overly large head) and suffered constant rejection due to his appearance. His inability to find requited love underscored his lyrics which demythologized romance. - -Fred Simon ***** My Funny Valentine - lyrics by Lorenz Hart, music by Richard Rodgers VERSE Be hold the way our fine feathered-friend his virtue doth parade. Thou knowest not my dim witted friend, the picture Thou hast made. Thy vacant brow and Thy tousled hair conceal Thy good intent. Thou noble upright, truthful, sincere And slightly dopey gent- you are. REFRAIN My funny valentine Sweet comic valentine You make me smile with my heart You looks are laughable, unphotographable Yet you're my favorite work of art Is your figure less than Greek Is your mouth a little bit weak When you open it to speak, are you smart? Don't change a hair for me Not if you care for me Stay little valentine stay Each day is valentine's day ***** "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun" - William Shakespeare My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun; Coral is far more red than her lips' red: If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun; If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head. I have seen roses damask'd, red and white, But no such roses see I in her cheeks; And in some perfumes is there more delight Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks. I love to hear her speak,--yet well I know That music hath a far more pleasing sound; I grant I never saw a goddess go, My mistress when she walks, treads on the ground; And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare As any she belied with false compare. ***** My Romance - lyrics by Lorenz Hart, music by Richard Rodgers VERSE I won't kiss your hand, Madam, Crazy for you though I am. I'll never woo you on bended knee, No Madam, not me. We don't need that flow'ry fuss, No sir, Madam, not for us REFRAIN My romance doesn't have to have a moon in the sky My romance doesn't need a blue lagoon standing by; No month of May, no twinkling stars, no hide away, no soft guitars. My romance doesn't need a castle rising in Spain, Nor a dance to a constantly surprising refrain. Wide awake I can make my most fantastic dreams come true. Apparently he originally wrote it as 15-second theme for the US version of the British TV series 'Dangerman', performed by Johhny Rivers. According to Sloan, "The Ventures, the genius guitar instrumental group, heard the demo and recorded and released the song way before Rivers even had a finished song." see http://www2.gol.com/users/davidr/sloan/aboutsongs.html As a 'covers slut', Bob, you'll be impressed that there have been around 40 covers of the song in addition to Rivers and Devo - some quite surprising - ie Bruce Willis, Hank Williams Jr, Willie Mitchell (what ever happened to him? - I loved him as a teenager and bought several of his singles - a bit like Junior Walker & The All Stars, who I also loved), UK singer Twinkle (who I only remember for a song called 'Terry' - a pale English version of the 'Leader of the Pack' motorbike crash theme - vroom, vroom!! The price quoted on the jacket is 18.99 UK pounds. Quoting from the press release: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "This definitive biography has been written and researched with the full co-operation of Joni Mitchell, who sanctioned first-hand interviews with many of those closest to her: friends, family, writers and collaborators, including former husband Larry Klein, long-time archivist and guitar technician Joel Berstein, and musicians Graham Nash and Tom Rush. Covering Mitchell's visual art as well as her music, the book includes fascinating previously unpublished correspondence between Mitchell and modernist painter Georgia O'Keefe. Broad in scope and full of detail, this is the remarkable story of the life and loves of an extraordinary and complex artist. Karen O'Brien is a music journalist and a BBC World Service radio news producer. She has written and broadcast widely on the arts. Karen's previous book, 'Hymn to Her', a collection of writings on women musicians was published by Virago in 1995. She is a New Zealander by birth and Londoner by choice." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I wrote to Karen asking if it was possible to get an advance copy to Ashara for the Jonifest but she has just written back to say that "unfortunately, I don't think the book will be back from the printers by then. This is the kind of remark that helped set me against Rickie Lee in the first place. The press can certainly add fuel to what may have been no more than little flare-ups of competitive jealousy or resentment. I don't see why this writer felt the need to add a little editorial swipe at Joni. It doesn't add anything to the review or reflect well on anybody. Thank you for posting this, Fred. I had completely forgotten there was an intro to this song. You don't hear it very often. I think Linda Ronstadt sang it on one of her Nelson Riddle records. It lightens the song up a bit and presents the loved one in a more positive light. The info about Hart was also very interesting and enlightening. > > "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun" - William Shakespeare The tone of the Shakespeare seems different to me. Earthier & less maudlin. There also seems to be a touch of humor in it. I really get the idea of reality being preferable to fantasy in this better than in 'My Funny Valentine'. > My Romance - lyrics by Lorenz Hart, music by Richard Rodgers I do like this song. To me this one is paying a very high compliment to the loved one. It's saying the trappings don't matter, all I really need is you. I like that. Thanks for all the info, Fred. I noticed the following and thought I would add what little I know. Brian Jones died in the swimming pool of his house in Hartfield, a tiny village near where I live. The house had previously been owned by AA Milne and was hence the home of Christopher Robin which, no doubt, is the reason for the title of the book. "Who killed Cock Robin" is the title of a well known nursery rhyme but I can't really think of any link Joni could have made between Cock Robin and Christopher Robin the former being a bird and the latter a boy. That's a celebrity death match if I ever heard one. :) Bet it would be some album though. Seriously I rate Elvis very highly and have many of his albums. Lyrically I believe he is second only to Joni. I know he doesn't have Joni's poetry but for astute observation and clever phrasing he has no peer (IMO). As for the voice I can see a lot of people not being able to get past it. Elvis has acknowledged this himself. However coming from the music of the old growler John Martyn, Elvis seems like Maria Callas. The first time I played a Joni album was on a typical Scottish summer day, of course I was wearing a thick sweater and a look that reflected being AWOL from high school. At that time my folks were still proud owners of a six feet long cabinet with WOW! state of the art stereo speakers. Stereo! Ooosh! The first 7 inch I ever encountered was that belonging to Tom Jones. The Green Green Grass still seems as green as it was then in 19 sixty mid. Those were the days when when you wanted to record you had to put a live microphone up close to the speakers and demand the entire household be hushed for fear of a distant "Dr Who's coming on!" I digress. When I first heard Joni on a high school afternoon, well to be honest I can't be sure if it was C&S or THOSL, but I do remember thinking - oosh! Big Yellow Taxi and Woodstock aside, both of which which I'd heard in the melee of groaning up in high school, (the first track, now was it Court and Spark or IFTKOMS?) sent shivers through me timbers and boy I've been shivered ever since. The reason I'm writing this is because I'm listening to C&S and it's reminding me of those daze. Man I wish I were still so impressionable! The first time ever I ... I hope you're having a lovely day. It was a bit naughty of me to slag the west coast and not explain that what I meant was the 80's rock sound typified I suppose by Van Halen and pretend rebels Guns 'n Roses etc. I'd be nuts to deny the greatness of Love, The Byrds, CSN, Chet Baker, Randy Newman and mile long list of others. Speaking of west coast, Roger McGuinn was on the radio here this morning talking and playing records. He said some things of interest. Mr Tambourine Man was done live in 2 takes by him and the session guys who also played on most of the Beach Boys and Phil Spector records, whereas it took the Byrds themselves 70 takes to record Turn Turn Turn. Eight Miles High is not about drugs but a flight to London and was originally called Six Miles High but Clarke suggested changing it after he heard The Beatles Eight Days A Week. The shop has been responsible for bringing some unlikely tourists to Staten Island: Joni Mitchell, for one, who immortalized the shop in a song, and George Harrison, who popped in one day unannounced and went on a 40- minute shopping spree.
