I am ridiculously right handed. My left hand is completely stupid and won't do anything it's told. I can barely even hold a pen in my left hand, let alone write anything intelligible with it! Which makes me think it's the reason I never got the hang of playing the guitar - my fingers just won't move around on the strings quickly enough. I basically have to concentrate on each finger one at a time in order to get anything even approximating a normal chord. I know everyone will say "Practise", but believe me, I've tried, and it just ain't gonna happen! I suspect that's also the reason I struggled with the clarinet for 7 years, before realising I was never going to be any good! That being the case, I am seriously thinking about giving the trumpet a go - I'm pretty sure only one hand has to work any keys, and I think it might be the answer. I may even search out a few second-hand music stores while I'm in the US, and see if I can find one cheap! Hi Brian, Your post brings waves of nostalgia...I remember a road trip taken in the 1970s to the Oregon coast. "Hissing of Summer Lawns" had just been released and I was playing it constantly. As we crossed the bridge you mention I clearly recall the title track "HOSL" playing on the tape deck. This was during the infancy of automobile cassette decks. I had paid a small fortune for the big black Teac auto-reverse model (external bracket mount, of course...the damn thing was WAY too big to fit in the dashboard) and it spent more time in the shop than it did in my car but for moments like this it was all worth it. Whenever I hear that song I think back to that brilliant summer day on the highway next to the ocean. So they asked, well, what does that mean? and the earth was then created as an organic computer to come up with the answer, but, unfortunately, the earth was destroyed to make way for an intergalactic bypass right before the answer was to be revealed. ..don't it always seem to go? Bravo "Popular Song" Wed. Aug 15 11PM & 2AM EST Got this from rockontv.com, who are pretty reliable. Caught some of the series last night, it was excellent. Hank Williams wrote "Hey Good Lookin'" in the back of a car on the way to a gig. Wonder how many great songs were written in cars? Joni and Beatles did some for sure. I started to send individual responses, but then my email server was taken offline (permanently) so I've been in e-mail oblivion for a week. Jimmy very kindly asked me about posting more lyrics. Well, that got me going on a project I've been meaning to do for quite some time. I've recorded 9 of my songs digitally and have created a CD. I've only made 10 copies so far (it takes a while to copy them and print and assemble the CD booklet). If there's enough interest and if anyone has ideas about electronic distribution to those who want a copy (big assumption here on my part :-), I'm all ears. (I'm still old-fashioned. I like the idea of a CD package, with art work, lyrics, etc...) In the meantime, here's are some lyrics that never really became a song... lots of love Anne In Georgia's Eyes An eagle's squint and an artist's hand Stroke the land and sky I'd like to see the world Through Georgia's eyes The sun bites at the windowpanes Perched on walls so high Smoke drains colors all away In Georgia's eyes A single door in black or rust Opens through stark white Tiles march through the dust In Georgia's eyes There's a blackbird stalled above the snow A tree gnarled in the night A big cross stalks New Mexico In Georgia's eyes A skull hangs above the land Faraway and nearby It's death and life and dust and sand In Georgia's eyes An eagle's squint and and artist's hand Stroke the land and sky I'd like to see the world Through Georgia's eyes ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Aug 2001 21:44:48 EDT From: RoseMJoy@aol.com Subject: Re: a million thanks and a project (njc) In a message dated 8/13/01 9:37:42 PM Eastern Daylight Time, asandstrom@macromedia.com writes: > In Georgia's Eyes > > An eagle's squint and an artist's hand > Stroke the land and sky > I'd like to see the world > Through Georgia's eyes > > The sun bites at the windowpanes > Perched on walls so high > Smoke drains colors all away > In Georgia's eyes > > A single door in black or rust > Opens through stark white > Tiles march through the dust > In Georgia's eyes > > There's a blackbird stalled above the snow > A tree gnarled in the night > A big cross stalks New Mexico > In Georgia's eyes > > A skull hangs above the land > Faraway and nearby > It's death and life and dust and sand > In Georgia's eyes > > An eagle's squint and and artist's hand > Stroke the land and sky > I'd like to see the world > Through Georgia's eyes > > > I love this Anne, you should write the music to this! I know some people who heard the original radio program have no use for the TV program at all. I on the other hand saw the TV program first when it was released on American TV on PBS and loved it in spite of some of it's cheap effects and costumes because of the writing. It was so much better than Dr. Who which I thought took itself to seriously. Interesting fact - Douglas Adams also wrote for Dr. Who and also a children's cartoon program from the Netherlands called Dr. Snuggles which used the voices of Peter Uztinov. The interesting thing about the BBC series is that though most of the effects were rather cheaply done it was one of the first to use computer graphics - even before they were being used in American movies. Yeah, aka "English Ford", a tiny car with a 4 cylinder engine fit for a small go-cart. I got thrown off the freeway with it because it would only go 35mph on a slight incline. A friend used to tell me it reminded him of some little circus car that lots of clowns would emerge from. Another great part is where he's describing John Watson. I'm paraphrasing, but it's something like: "Take a couple of David Bowies, and stick them onto a couple more David Bowie's and you'll have something that doesn't look quite like him but which those who know him would find hauntingly familiar. He was tall and he gangled."
