With that in mind, I pick up the Sunday paper on Friday so that I can be prepared. That said, now I can report on an article in this coming Sunday's Chronicle. The article is titled "Quintessential Cool" and it goes on about who is cool, who isn't cool, who was cool and lost it, and in the case of Bob Dylan who was cool, lost it, and then got some of it back. The best part is the "Cool Hall Of Fame" which is as follows: 1. Thelonious Monk: "There are no wrong notes" 2. Keith Richards: Did entire '81 tour without luggage 3. Johnny Cash: The Man in Black 4. Billie Holiday: The worse she felt, the better she sounded 5. Chet Baker: Adonis with a horn 6. Nat King Cole: Cooler than Sinatra 7. Joni Mitchell: Would rather be painting 8. Patti Smith: "Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine" 9. Joao Gilberto: Father of bossa nova 10. Tom Waits: Tin Pan Alley: real tin pans, real alleys For the rest you will have to get the Datebook or Pink section and then you too can be cool. I have heard more and more Jewish friends who have visited or lived in Israel say the same kinds of things. Other Jews I work with or are friends with are still acting like it's the Palestinians who are victimizing the Israelis. The Palestinians just want back 22 per cent of the land that used to belong to them. They only want to live, as they have lived, on the same parcels of land which have been in their families for centuries. It's strange that in the United States we have less of a dialogue on these issues than they have in Israel. With all respect to any Muslims on this list, there are aspects of Arabic culture that I cannot honor, especially their treatment of women and their forced conversions of foreigners in holy wars (something Christians have been guilty of as well) as well as a continuation of slavery into modern times. But the Palestinians are only using the same terrorist tactics that Jewish settlers (like Menachem Begin) of Palestine used against the British. Anyone who is being pushed off of his land and had his or her house destroyed has the right to fight back. The Jews have been persecuted for centuries, and at the hands of the Nazis, they were the victims of the greatest crime of this or any other century. This should not prevent Americans and the rest of the world from seeing that the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands is a terrible injustice. We must have two nations in the land of Palestine or the conflict between Arabs and the West will never come to an end. As a religious skeptic, the entire situation is deeply troubling and demonstrates that religious beliefs are often the justification for war, territorial conquest, and repression of other peoples of different faiths. Here is a case of religious fervor being more divisive than uniting. As someone who believes that Moses was a fictional character and that Jesus and Mohammed were mere human beings, I see the Jews and Arabs fighting over religious sites which are merely piles of worthless rocks. What good is religion if it does not enforce peace and the fair treatment of other human beings? I am sickened by the recent suicide attack in Jerusalem which left so many dead, but there is just as much sickening violence being perpetrated by the Israelis against what have become a subject people. - - Clark ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Aug 2001 15:02:06 -0500 From: "Sharon L. Nuriel, Last time I cried over a Joni song would be maybe two years ago when a relationship that I had been in for 14 years finally died, was buried, and rotted in the ground. The song: All I Want, and the tears because there was never going to a way that the love that had once been there would ever bring out the best in the other person or in me too. I got choked up reading your words about what is happening in Israel now. I fear that what is coming is what I have been afraid of since Rabin was assassinated. Israel must exist and the cause of the Palestinians is right and in the light of the 1930s and 1940s the treatment of the Palestinians today is bitterly ironic. There is a message about nature and human existence there that is very painful and sad indeed. As South Africa has found a way despite all predictions to change without massive violence and bloodshed, may Israel and the Palestinians also find a way. This is the reason I used the word 'seem', Kakki when talking about survival being at odds with the teachings of Christ. I also did not mention the word Christianity which, as a religion, to me anyway, is not necessarily always one & the same with the teachings of Christ. Personally I think that humans as a species have a lot of evolving left to do if we ever expect to survive in the long run. The problems that are facing humanity and the planet we inhabit are far too difficult & complex to be solved by the simplistic survival of the fittest axiom. Until humans learn to value every single individual on the planet, the species doesn't stand a chance. We're all in this together and we all have something to contribute. After all, our brains have developed enough analytical thinking that we've been able to send humans to the moon. Surely we've progressed somewhat from the jungle mentality. Killing the earth & killing each other isn't going to accomplish the ultimate survival of the species. Compassion and caring for one another are the only sane ways to survive on this earth. Jesus knew that and for that I honor him. I think Joni would agree with me here. But deifying him was a mistake, I think. He was human. And as a human, we can aspire to follow the message he gave us and maybe rid ourselves of some of the useless guilt that other humans have tried to impose on it. Then we might just be able to do some good in this sad old world and the species maybe can continue to move forward. Enough of that. Don't know when the last time was, but there are certain songs that can always put a lump in my throat-Silky Veils is one-Woman of Heart and Mind is another. > a bloodbath that may never end. do you think that the israeli care? the hell they do. they're too busy trying to buy black market tickets to the red hot cheely peppers's show. would that group have appeared at south africa back then? i guess they would have. Shame on the Chili Peckers... and shame on the US gov't for supplying the instruments of death and the stamp of approval for Israeli aggression all these years. I hope that somehow this crisis can be resolved without further escalation. It's sad and nerve-wracking and so unneccesary. Be safe, Nureil. Spent the evening practicing guitar and playing my new Dan Electro Baritone guitar (which MIGHT make the trip to Boston with me maybe). I also watched a great film tonight with Samuel L. Jackson called The Caveman's Valentine. The music was done by my friend Terrance Blanchard. It is simply brilliant> I have to go buy the soundtrack asap. In other news fom New Orleans, the Continental Drifters were on JukeBox from Jazzland last night and they were over the top good. They played a cover of "Dedicated To the One I Love" which had me in tears. Ubnfortunatly we went to black and missed more than half it on video. I couldn't convince the EP to comtinue shooting it or doing an overrun with them. It was SO cool tho and it made me think of all you music sluts.. I've always thought that was precisely the message - that he was human, a very great human and example to which we could all aspire. Guilt has no place in it. Conscience, yes, but I was even taught by the (perhaps more progressive than most California) nuns that handwringing guilt was a "sin".
