There are a lot of nice things about living here, not the least of which is six working weeks of paid leave every year, four months of paid maternity leave for working expectant mothers and up to two years of unpaid leave for either parent after the birth of the child, national health care, no homeless people, gun control, mandatory national recycling of *everything* (plastic, paper, glass, metal, oil, biological waste), great coffee and unbelievable chocolate. And you know, I think that it has less to do with a "Little Green" than with the maturing understanding that, as wonderful as love feels, it comes with responsibilities. Remember that 70's song, "If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don't Want To Be Right," (ohmigod, now I am going to have that tune stuck in my head all week!)? With the roots of "free love" and then today's me centered pop psychology, people forget that love comes with responsibilties. They get stuck in the "this was meant to be!" and make a beeline for those heady clouds. Again, at 42 years old, I am now very certain that love is not free. Sometimes it is responsibility to yourself, to make sure that your relationship is nurturing to your heart and soul as well as to your partner. Sometimes it is a responsibility to your children, to make sure that you are setting a good example of approrpriate relationships. Sometimes it is responsibility to others, to not go down paths that wreck havoc on families or individuals. Sometimes it is as simple as having reliable birth control. And sometimes it means that the love just exists and you simply cannot act upon it. I love his version (it is the only one I have heard!) >> It is, Colin. The song was first sung, believe it or not, by Johnny Mathis, the theme song to a film of the same name. Bowie's version, which is indeed storming, was heavily indebted to Nina's version, which is proof of her genius, especially when you realise at the end, after that incredible singing and stunning piano playing, that it was recorded live in concert! Something I remember about the Bowie version is that the video that was made for it (although it wasn't released as a single until some seven or eight years after the album came out) featured all white musicans (his superb band at that time were all black), including a pretty woman clutching a saxophone, even though there is no sax on the song, and if there had been, Bowie would have been playing it himself! Ah, those were the days, when some very strange contortions were undertaken to prevent non-caucasian faces getting prominence. Anyone remember that record Mr DJ by The Concept? The DJ performing the monologue was black, the face on the sleeve of the single was... white! Her broad insights and the duality of her writings reach just about anyone and everyone. Any Radiohead fans should give these guys a try. I must say that as much as I love Thom Yorke, the lead singer of TB does a more graceful turn with his falsetto (Check out "Mind Over Money".) I agree; it is very derivative and not my particular cup of tea. It has sold platinum and has been in the top 20 since the release in April which is massive considering what the rest of the top 20 looks like these days.
