Barry Better to be safe then sorry, especially since this sorry comes with a high price tag. Warning - 809 Area Code Trick Can Be Extremely Costly. DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809. This one is being distributed all over the US. This is pretty scary --- especially given the way they try to get you to call. Be sure you read this & pass it on to all your friends and family so they don't get scammed! MAJOR SCAM: Don't respond to Emails, phone calls, or web pages which tell you to call an "809" Phone Number. This is a very important issue of Scam Busters because it alerts you to a scam that is spreading *extremely* quickly - can easily cost you $24,100 or more, and is difficult to avoid unless you are aware of it. We'd like to thank Verizon for bringing this scam to our attention. This scam has also been identified by the National Fraud Information Center and is costing victims a lot of money. There are lots of different permutations of this scam, but HERE'S HOW IT WORKS: You will receive a message on your answering machine or pager which asks you to call a number beginning with area code 809. The reason you're asked to call varies. It can be to receive information about a family member who has been ill, to tell you someone has been arrested, died, to let you know you have won a wonderful prize, etc. In each case, you are told to call the 809 number right away. Since there are so many new area codes these days, people unknowingly return these calls. If you call from the US, you will apparently be charged $2425 per-minute and get a long recorded message. The point is, they will try to keep you on the phone as long as possible to increase the charges. Unfortunately, when you get your phone bill, you'll often be charged more than $24,000.00. WHY IT WORKS: The 809 area code is located in the British Virgin Islands (Bahamas). The 809 area code can be used as a "pay-per-call" number, similar to 900 numbers in the US. Since 809 is not in the U.S., it is not covered by U.S. regulations of 900 numbers, which require that you be notified and warned of charges and rates involved when you call a "pay-per-call" number. There is also no requirement that the company provide a time period during which you may terminate the call without being charged. Further, whereas many U.S. phones have 900 number blocking to avoid these kinds of charges, 900 number blocking will not prevent calls to the 809 area code. We recommend that no matter how you get the message, if you are asked to call a number with an 809 area code that you don't recognize and/or investigate further and just disregard the message. Be wary of email or calls asking you to call an 809 area code number. It's important to prevent becoming a victim of this scam, since trying to fight the charges afterwards can become a real nightmare. That's because you did actually make the call. If you complain, both your local phone company and your long distance carrier will not want to get involved and will most likely tell you that they are simply providing the billing for the foreign company. You'll end up dealing with a foreign company that argues they have done nothing wrong. Please forward this entire message to your friends, family and colleagues to help them become aware of this scam. Things are about to get worse, because that infamous off-shore area code (809) is in the process of breaking up into smaller ones. Soon, you will have to think twice about calling any of the following area codes: 242, 246, 264, 268, 284, 345, 441, 473, 664, 758, 767 784, 787, 868, 869, 876 as well as 809. My source of your contact gave me the courage and confidence to rely on you. I am writing you in absolute confidence primarily to seek your assistance to transfer our cash of Thirty Two Million Eight Hundred Thousand Dollars (US$32,800,000) now in the custody of a Safe Deposit Company here in Abidjan to your private account pending our arrival to your country. SOURCE OF THE MONEY My late father, SIR ETIENN DAVIDSON, a native of Mende District in the Northern Province of Sierra Leone, was the General Manager of Sierra Leone Mining Cooperation (S.L.M.C) Freetown. According to my father. This money was the income accrued from overpayments and personal diamond business at the minning cooperation. Before the peak of the civil war between the rebels forces of Major Paul KOROMAH and the combined forces of ECOMOG peace keeping operation that almost destroyed my country, following the forceful removal from power of the Civilian Elected President Ahmed Tejan KABBAH by the rebels. My father had already made arrangement for his family, my mother, my little sister and myself to be evacuated to Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire with our personal effects and the box containing the money through the aid of UNAMSIL evacuation team. My father deposited the box in a Private Safe Security Company for the safe custody until after the war when he will join us. During the war in my country, and following the indiscriminate looting of public and Government properties by the Rebel forces, the Sierra Leone Mining Cooperation was one of the targets looted and destroyed. My father including other top Government functionaries were ambushed and killed by the Rebels because of his relationship with the civilian Government of Ahmed Tejan Kabbah. As a result of my father's death, and with the news of my uncle's involvement in an air crash in January, dashed our hope of survival. The untimely deaths caused my mother's heart failure and other related complications of which she later died in the hospital after we must have spent a lot of money on her. Now my 16-year-old sister and myself are alone in this strange country suffering without any care or help. Without any relation, we are now refugees and orphans. Our only hope now is in you and the box deposited in the Safe Security Company. To this effect, I humbly solicit your assistance in the followings ways. - - To assist me claim this box from the Security Company as Beneficiary. - - To transfer this money in your name to your country. - - To make a good arrangement for a joint business investment on our behalf in your country and you, the caretaker. - - To secure a college for my little sister and my self in your country to further our education. - - And to make arrangement for our travel with you to your country after you have transferred this fund. Most importantly, the security company officials do not know the exact content of the box because it was declared as family valuables. The whole documents issued after deposit is in my custody. What ever you may charge is negotiable based on your efforts and assistance. Lastly I urge you to keep this transaction strictly confidential. NB: Please always call me on phone after sending a mail for security reasons. I've been away for practically the whole month and just thought I'd say hi and post my review of one of the best concerts I have ever seen! I saw A Walk Down Abbey Road. I was visiting one of my dearest friends Theresa (that friend you can laugh and cry with at the same time and it all makes sense and who knows you so well it's scary). I had such a wonderful time in South Carolina. I was supposed to be seeing Stevie Nicks and I wrote this review as my Stevie review since she CANCELLED on us! Hope it makes sense I was still in a dazed mode when I wrote it. Love Nikki So I'm here in South Carolina. Laurie flew from Mississippi, Karen flew from New Orleans and I drove down from PA to visit Theresa and see some Stevie shows. I pulled up to Theresa's house and was greeted with the news of not 1, but 2 cancelled Stevie shows, VA Beach and Raleigh. So we were pretty upset and got drunk ard put on our own show! We then got tickets for the Charlotte show. The day before the show she cancelled that one too. So we got 3 bottles of champagne (1 each) and put on another show of our own (which was rocking by the way.) We heard me may have called some people. Luckily, Laurie and Theresa noticed that Ann Wilson was playing right down the road as part of the A Walk Down Abbey Road tour with Todd Rundgren, Alan Parsons and John Entwhistle. After 3 cancelled shows we really needed this show. We were so excited to see Ann Wilson one of the greatest, most energetic and passionate singers! We were so excited to see a show and didn't believe it til we were in the seats and they showed up on stage! They put on a rocking show. It was the last show of the tour and they were playing gags on each other and having a great time on stage. We were in the 3rd row but were up by the 1st row most of the time. Ann rocked it out on Barracuda, Crazy On You and Dreamboat Annie. She played flute and acoustic guitar. it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. When we were allowed to go up to the stage (there was a barrier about 6 feet from the stage) we were right there in the front and threw some roses to Ann which she picked up and smelled. Then after the last song before the encore the drummer threw his drumstick which fell before the barrier. The guard picked it up and handed it to me underneath people climbing all over me. Then after being totally blown away by the show we decided to hang out afterwards to see if we could meet Ann. The guard came up to me and picked me out of the crowd cause of the drumstick. I asked to take my friends but sadly they wouldn't let me. They are so cool cause they were so excited for me. So I went backstage and I met some of the guys in the band, Alan Parsons and ANN FUCKIN WILSON! She must have been exhausted but was very gracious and sweet. I couldn't believe I was meeting her. After stumbling over my words we got talking and she was telling me about her new album and Nancy's new score to Cameron Crowe's new movie. Then someone gave her a guitar to sign for the amp theater and she started playing Dear Prudence. Then one of the guitarists from John Entwhistle (of the Who) band took the guitar and started playing Tangerine. Then I said how about Joni and Ann's ears perked up. It was like having a private concert, it was so amazing Ann sitting right in front of me singing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got to sing Big Yellow Taxi with Ann Wilson! I can't believe it. I think I am still in shock. I also before I had to leave asked her if I could have a picture and she said, "ok." She was very nice about it. I also met her kids Marie and Dustin and they are sweet children. When I came out from backstage my awesome friends were waiting there and Laurie had her camera ready to catch my dazed statement. A night to remember that's for sure! Who needs a Stevie Nicks concert anyways. Ann could outsing her any day! Wow.... Nikki, This is *so* cool! What a thrill for you! Back around 79 or 80 I used to walk around a neighborhood in Seattle that has some beautiful, huge old homes in it. There was one house that had a beautiful front porch with lots of trim, all painted white. I would often see a little blue Porsche parked on the street in front of this house with the license plate BTTRFLY and I always wondered if it belonged to one of the Wilson sisters. When I first moved to Seattle (78), Heart did two concerts, one on December 30 and one on New Year's Eve. It was the Dog & Butterfly tour. I went to the 12/30 concert and it's certainly one of the best I've ever seen. I think Ann is one of the great rock & roll singers. What a voice! They closed with Mistral Wind and I can still remember watching & hearing those chimes being played at the end. It was awesome. My late partner used to work at the flagship store of what used to be Seattle's best department store, Frederick & Nelson. Edward was the headwaiter in the store's restaurant and he waited on Nancy once. Said she was very nice. But alas, I myself have never actually spotted one of the Wilson sisters on the streets of Seattle. I envy you! I remember somebody taking me out to the lobby during that part of 'Darby O'Gill' (I almost typed DOGATLP but decided to give Catherine a break ;-) I don't remember if this was because I was actually scared or somebody thought it would be too scary for me but I never knew there *was* a banshee in this film until I saw it on the Disney channel as an adult. Btw (sorry Catherine!), I met a woman from Ireland once who said most people on the Emerald Isle regard this movie as a total joke, kinda like the Irish equivalent of Stepin' Fetchit, and would be embarrassed to own the video or be caught watching it! I know we have Irish listers. Is that the case or was Fidelma pulling my leg? Those Wilson sisters *are* something else, damn. I've been reading about the tour on other lists and everyone has been raving. I can't believe you have left Stevie behind ;-) but it sounds like you did see an amazing show. Your story reminded me of my best friend thirty years ago practically hitchiking from college in Ft. Collins to Denver by herself to see her other hero (besides Joni) Gordon Lightfoot. After the show she called some friends to pick her up but they were an hour away. Meanwhile, his roadies started chatting with her and invited her to the after-party with Gordon. She ended up singing and playing guitar with him over a few cans of Coors (3-2 beer was legal for 18 year olds then) and later sent me the pictures (Gordon looking trim in Maple Leaf T-shirt) with the two of them arm and arm (and holding Coors cans). It's still one of my most treasured photos. I know we have Irish listers. Is that the case or was > Fidelma pulling my leg? Well, she might be right - the Irish do tend to be characterized at a type in American movies (although, while the characterizations are perhaps shallow, they have not been outright offensive to me). In my experience most Irish people have a huge sense of humor and ability to laugh at themselves and the world and most know deep down that they are quite a gifted and illustrious people (never met a one with a lack of self-esteem). Their history is very long-suffering - it made them pretty tough all in all, IMO. NJC > Of course, it begs the question - if Stevie has laryngitis, how can you tell? > :~D > LOL! Good one, Bob! Poor Stevie has always had problems with her voice. I saw her once in the 80s and was disappointed. She said at the beginning of the concert that her voice would open up after a song or two but it never did. She kept wandering off stage during instrumental interludes and I always wondered if she was going back for a toot. From her interviews about that period, it seems highly likely. But I still like her. I have a Fleetwood Mac boot with a killer version of Rhiannon on it and a really nice performance of Landslide. It's on a vinyl lp so it's not very long but I'd be willing to tape it if anybody's interested. Probably something really common that everybody already has! Starts with 'Station Man', also has 'Spare Me a Little of Your Love' which is one of Christine's songs that I like quite a lot. If I were from Ireland like your friend maybe I would find the American portrayal of Irish people silly and offensive. I suppose I might likewise be offended if the native Irish owned the film and TV industry and always characterized Americans as dullard, no-culture Jerry Springer-watching mall rats! But again, I think the Irish "stereotypes" in film here are pretty innocuous, shallow maybe, but charming overall. They've been warned so often about not talking to strangers, keeping the doors locked, etc., that it scares them to think of a strange man coming into the house in the middle of the night. It's understandable, I guess, but it still makes me think that it's kind of a sad state we've got ourselves into, isn't it?!
