Billy King writes: "I remember she was absolutely stunning that night - the best concert I've seen in my entire life (among many). Me and my girlfriend at the time were among the first people through the door, and we ran for the best seats we could get...which were 3rd row on the floor, slightly off-center. Joni was a bit somber at times (her pal Cass Elliot had been found dead in London only a few days before), and I remember she broke maybe three or four guitar strings in a row tuning up for "Help Me!" Joni was brilliant and the audience was adoring. I remember I caught a few of Joni's roses--tossed by the stagehands afterwards (in Louisville - home of the 'run for the roses'), which I kept for many years. It was a beautiful night I'll never forget." - ------------------------ Search the "Today" database: http://www.jmdl.com/today ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 02:59:37 EDT From: CarltonCT@aol.com Subject: Surf's up by Wilson/Parks (NJC) I saw Van Dyke Parks being interviewed one time and he talked about how the other Beach Boys came to him behind Brian's back and asked him what his lyrics to Surf's Up meant. What did he mean by "columnated ruins domino?" Parks couldn't explain it then and those lyrics still don't mean anything now. Regardless, it's a gorgeous song. Brian Wilson always felt that one of the reasons he wasn't as honored as the Beatles is because the Beach Boys lyrics weren't as strong as theirs. I think that's probably true. He thought he was entering a loftier realm by hooking up with Van Dyke and his stream of consciousness poetry. Surf's Up is a very beautiful album and most of the other songs on it make very good sense and many have an achingly beautiful existential anguish. I saw Brian get interviewed in this documentary "Theremin" that you can rent and which I highly recommend. The theremin gave that spooky haunting quality to Good Vibrations. Brian seems a bit crazy in this interview and talks about how the theremin had a scary sound that was "scary, like sex." I was surprised to read in a recent interview in Vanity Fair that he only took LSD twice, which if you ask me, is not nearly enough. - - Clark NP: Eurythmics, 1984 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 17:13:21 +1000 From: john low Subject: Books & Sorrow NJC A comment on two recent threads: Sorrow and Books! I have just finished reading a beautiful and very moving book about a daughter coming to terms with the suicide of her father. "You Cant Catch Death" is by Ianthe Brautigan, the daughter of the once very popular American writer Richard Brautigan who ended his life by suicide in 1984. Her writing, uncluttered and imbued with a steadfast love for her father, gives her sorrow and quest for understanding a positive power that can deeply affect the reader. I came to the book as a fan of Richard Brautigans writing. I love his gentle, surreal humour and the apparent simplicity that often masks complex observations on the human condition. I finished Ianthes memoir feeling I had been allowed a much more personal insight into this complicated and troubled human being. Sire of Sorrow, indeed, and a book I can highly recommend. Live, however, has been planted in my head and is growing like Jack's bean stalk. I can't wait to get in my car and listen to it. Jonatha is like Joni in that her chord structures are like the narratives of a good movie or novel -- they are sound but unpredictable. She's got a lot of sus chords and interesting dissonances not unlike Joni's music since they both use open tunings. Jonatha is really a very good guitarist, and she employs a good electrical guitarist to add some haunting embellishments like the Joan does, but largely, Jonatha strikes me as being an original. I have never liked live albums very much, but this one is very well recorded. I'm looking forward to seeing her on Conan later on. Marian, are tabs for Jonatha posted on the net? And is she using a pick or her fingers? Her percussive style is very distinctive. - - Clark ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 20:20:55 +1200 From: "hell" Subject: Re: some news Anne wrote: > I've been putting off sending this email until I knew more. The people here have not been afraid to stand and be counted and be decent people who tolerate differing opinions but do not toelrate nastiness. So why did a post titled 'expose the bitch' not flutter an eyelid when aimed at one of our list members? where was the support for Debra? Surely it isn't that the list was in agreement with the poster? That is how it appears. Silence often is interpreted as support. Pat was the only mail I read concerning it and I agree with everything he wrote about Debra. Tori Amos' next album, Strange Little Girls, is going to be an album of 'reinterpretations'. Apparently she is quite clear that this not the same as a covers album. The idea is that she takes songs written by men, that are normally sung from a very male perspective and delivers them from her own female perspective, without actually changing the lyrics. I thought I'd post this to the list, as not only are there quite a few Tori fans around, but also I know quite a few listers would be interested to hear that she also covers Tom Waits' 'Time' and Neil Young's 'Heart of Gold'. The reworking of 'Heart of Gold' is quite an overhaul. Barely recognisable really, but still good. Her version of 'Time' is much more traditional. Just her and the piano I think. I'm sure the most publicised song will be her version of Eminem's '97 Bonnie and Clyde'. Since I'm njcing about other musicians...I had a very pleasant surprise yesterday when I was offered last minute free tickets to see Suzanne Vega. I know Joni doesn't rate her at all (where did I read that?), but it was an outstanding performance. (Mind you, being in the Gods at the un-airconditioned Shepherds Bush Empire on one of the hottest nights of the year was far from pleasant!) She performed with just an acoustic guitar and with Mike Visceglia on bass, and apart from a handful of songs from the next album, she did a largely request based show. It was particularly interesting to hear the heavily Mitchell-Froom-produced songs of the last two albums performed almost acoustically. This week has been particularly cruel in London, since aside from Suzanne, many other good acts have been in town, and I have no money. It seems I've missed Richard Thompson, Ron Sexsmith (two other Froom produced acts!?), Patti Smith, Turin Brakes, and probably countless other good acts. I'm sure as soon as I have money again, the gigs will dry out. Anyway, enough of my rambling... Oh, and I'm probably a bit late, but Debra, hope you have/had a very happy birthday. She was born in Wimbledon in 1947 and died in 1978 as a result of head injuries sustained in a fall down a flight of stairs. She was the lead singer for three groups: the Strawbs, Fairport Convention and Fotheringay. She also performed as a solo artist. The first of Sandy's compositions to be recorded by another artist was "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" which was recorded by Judy Collins. Sandy's own version of the song is featured on my favourite Fairport Convention album, "Unhalfbricking", which was originally released in 1969. "Unhalfbricking" is a great album, which I feel would appeal to Joni fans. My all-time favourite Sandy Denny album, however, is "Fotheringay" by Fotheringay, originally released in 1970. It is a beautiful album. Last year a compilation of Sandy's songs, including "Who Knows Where the Time Goes", was released. It is entitled "No More Sad Refrains: the Anthology" and is probably the best introduction to Sandy Denny's beautiful compositions and voice. Sandy Dennis was an actress, born in New England in 1937. She died of ovarian cancer in 1992. Sandy studied at the Actors Studio in New York. Her first film role was in "Splendor in the Grass" in 1961 and her final role was in "The Indian Runner" in 1991. She won an Academy Award for her part in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" as well as Tony Awards for her roles on Broadway. As you can probably tell, I was more of a fan of Sandy Denny, but they were both fine artists and stars. It's good that we have fond memeories of them both and that their work lives on. No matter how "sane" forced medication may make him to stand trial, the fact remains that, if he was psychotic at the time he did the crime, then he's not guilty by reason of insanity. This isn't like someone claiming the Twinky defence. If they want to lock the guy up, they can put him in the forensic unit of a psychiatric hospital, which is not a nice place to be at all but where he won't be able to hurt anyone else and, if things improve and medication and therapy work and/or new treatments are found to make him truly well again, he may one day regain his sanity and be capable of repenting his crime. All I saw was what looked like a response to someone, where the entire gist of what happened was completely lost. I remember reading the line "expose the bitch" and thinking, a) what the heck was THAT all about? and b) if you disagree with someone about whatever, what kind of a person needs to stoop to using this kind of language, which proves absolutely no point except to show the person who said (wrote) it as someone who seems to resort to name-calling (immature) and who has already lost his/her argument (nothing left to say). Maybe I missed it because I was getting behind and there was a lot of volatile stuff going back and forth, a great deal of which I didn't understand and didn't particularly care to read. On the other hand, any posts from Debra that I've seen are well-written, thoughtful and thought-provoking and, whether you agree with her or not, she makes her point well and without resorting to foul language - which makes her a winner, as far as I'm concerned. There's a reason why movies are rated PG or PG13 or Adult Accompaniment or whatever ratings are used from one country to the next. And yet, so many of my kids' friends have seen stuff even I wouldn't want to see. When my daughter was only 11 or 12, she said that a number of her friends had seen a bunch of those slasher movies, with people being disembowelled and so on. My own goofball husband (ha! estranged and very strange soon-to-be ex-husband!) has absolutely no sense this way. He used to rent videos that HE wanted to see and sometimes he would say the kids absolutely couldn't see it (talk about forbidden fruit!); other times he'd say, "Oh, the kids can see this" and I'd look at the blurb on the back that would tell you how many "objectionable phrases" (someone actually sits there and COUNTS them???) and how many murders, beatings, rapes etc. occurred and I'd say, "Are you NUTS? Did you READ this thing?" Jeez, you don't need to overprotect them but some people have absolutely NO clue about anything - people should have to get a licence to have kids (I'd probably have flunked but, oh well, that's the chance you take when you make up your own draconian rules!) I agree with everything you wrote tho i don't think repent is the right word should he ever be well. If he gets well, yse he will ahve shit to deal with but he still wouldn't be responsible for his crime as he was sick at the time. That wouldn't stop him feeling regret of course, and it is not something I would like to live with.
