I meant to post when Michael first mentioned Tom Robbins. It's been quite a few years ago but I did read 'Another Roadside Attraction' and thought it was hilarious! I really should dig it out and read it again now that I've been to a few of the places he wrote about in that one. By the way, there really *is* a Humptulips Washington. Hmmmmm.... Having sex in a church sounds kind of fun! Would it have to be missionary position??? RE: I used pot for 12 years fro this reason but I can assure it DOES have side effects and quite unpleasant ones too. It IS addictive, and has physical consequences. It DOES have a PHYSICAL withdrawal effect: high anxiety, sweats, sleeplessness, muscle pain, stomach cramps, cold sweats and flushes, impotence. Wow! That's the first I've ever heard of physical withdrawl symptome from marijuana. I stopped smoking a few years ago, and had no symptoms whatsoever, I just stopped, and was fine. I wasn't a realy heavy smoker, however. About three times a week was the most I ever got high. Guess the time was right to stop. I was trying to get serious about going to graduate school, and wasn't too motivated when I was smoking. Nights lying on the floor channel surfing while listening to Hendrix thru headphones becomes just another waste of time after a while. I was also in a new relationship (now a longish relationship-going on 8 years) and my partner doesn't smoke. I wanted to be able to share life with him. And, pot really screwed up my sinuses and allergies, which are screwed up enough w/o inhaling smoke. For relaxation, I'd have to go with meditation. I don't do it much anymore (should start up again) but at one point about 10 years ago I was meditating for about 1/2 hour daily. After a couple weeks, daily living seemed somehow more meaningful, and thoughts and senses were in sharper focus. The pace of my life didn't really change, but my perception of it did. Everything seemed more deliberate, and purposeful, even laying around watching tv. Or try yoga. Many towns have adult ed. yoga classes, and they are really relaxing and fun. Interesting, creative types tend to gravitate towads yoga classes, too, so they can be good for the social life. Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo! For me, when it was good, I would absolutely laugh my ass off until I was coughing up a lung (I'd honestly be in pain because I couldn't stop), but it never calmed me. I remember once sitting in someone's bug-infested basement with a couple of Spinal Tap rejects, listening to Wish You Were Here and staring at this light covered with a pink tea towel. Of course, they were all mellowing out while I sat there muttering to myself "This is so fucking boring, and why didn't I ever notice before that Curtis has the freakiest ears I've ever seen?". I ended up putting a sock on my hand, trying to freak them out with a sock puppet because I just wasn't having the mellowness. Anyway, I finally quit completely when I started to get paranoid whenever I would smoke -- I mean seriously freaked out. It was panic attack city, let me tell ya. I still get the willies just thinking about it, 10 years later. Of course, I have a bunch of friends who still smoke, and they all think of me as some narc or something. A couple years ago, I popped into a friend's house before they were going out on the town. I stayed for a beer and left. However, I decided to go back about 20 mins later as I had some time to kill, and I waved to them as I walked up the walk, but couldn't figure out why it took so long for them to get the door. Well, I walk in, and the place stunk like a Glade factory, and nobody could look at me, and I swear, I felt like Fred MacMurray trying to hang out with Chip and Robbie. Sigh, it's a pain when you turn square....
