Captain For Dark Mornings njc Christmas and the Beads of Sweat is my personal favorite Laura Nyro album, too. But I agree with Mark: get them all ;-) A couple of years ago, when I went to the local record store intending to buy some Nyro CDs, I couldn't find any. I looked in all the logical places and finally had to ask for assistance. I was told that Laura Nyro was filed under "Folk," and sure enough, there she was. But no Christmas, etc. CD, which is now apparently hard to get. My advice: if you see one, buy it. It's SUCH a great album, and it's only grown over the years. I remember so well discovering Blue and Christmas and the Beads of Sweat at about the same time. There's been a lot of talk about Carole King's Tapestry lately. I remember that album fondly, but Blue, LOTC, James Taylor's Mudslide Slim, anything by CSNY, Paul McCartney's Ram, and Rod Stewart's Every Picture Tells a Story: they were the albums that were speaking to us. Carole King was pleasant, sort of like an aunt we all loved being tolerant and hip. Without exception, we preferred You've Got A Friend as performed by James Taylor. In those days (I'm talking about the very early 1970s), Joni Mitchell and Laura Nyro were really cutting edge. Maybe they aren't any more. Over the years, Joni and Laura seem to have accumulated a lot of imitators, but IMHO the only ones who count are the ones who've found their own personal voice. Laura Nyro was one hell of an artist. And I'll close on that note, with best to all, Roberto Mark wrote: >I see a couple of people have already mentioned 'Christmas and the >Beads of Sweat' which is my personal favorite. A definition of the word is included, same as that I remember being in the sheet music to Joni's opus. I always felt Joni was influenced by Sexton's work, and remember too somewhere a description of lawn sprinklers hissing in a Sexton Poem. I'm far from my books tonight, but I'll look it up when I get home, if anybody's interested. Sexton was not shy of myth-making herself, talked in her letters about fictions sometimes being truer than truth. I'm paraphrasing but sympathetic. And guilty with my own bear stories.....that's entertainment. In one of Jean Rhys's books, too, [I think it was "After Leaving Mr. Mackenzie"] there's a passage describing humans as creatures that crawl and fly. Like in "crawl and fly you and I." At any rate, there's good reading in these women. Who knows how things fall together,eh? I tend to think so long as art happens, it doesn't matter. Take care all. greenstudio ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 02:17:48 -0700 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: George NJC My prayers of healing for dear George my favorite Beatle. ******************************************** Kate Bennett www.katebennett.com sponsored by Polysonics www.polysonics.com Discover the Indies at Taylor Guitars: http://www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/bennett.html ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 02:17:45 -0700 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: Subject: RE: jonis speaking voice, Long Jim wrote,"I dunno. I really don't think this will go on for years. For those who have not been following it, the appeals court tossed out the breakup of the company but upheld the finding that Microsoft abused its monopoly in the market for PC operating systems. The case is scheduled to go back before a new district court judge before the summer ends to determine remedy and to determine whether MS has illegally tied IE to Windows. There was a news report today in the Wall Street Journal about DOJ and MS sitting for settlement talks, but MS is apparently considering a Supreme Court review of the appeals court ruling and DOJ has requested that the return to the lower court be expedited in order to get a ruling before the release of Windows XP. Either way, it seems there's going to be lots of action with this case right up to XP's scheduled release in October. > The way our system is now, it may > only leave the option of another strong competitor coming forth to knock him > off his game a bit. It eventually happened with IBM. The one place where this seems to be happening is with the net. AOL-TW is the opponent and the recent breakdown in talks with MS to continue the long-standing marketing deal of bundling AOL software with Windows really is all about media players and instant messaging - both of which are critical to AOL-TW's strategy to remain the #1 ISP and MS's .Net strategy. The English newspaper the Daily Mail on Sunday said Harrison had told his friend and former Beatles producer George Martin "that he does not have long to live." The newspaper quoted Martin as saying: "He is taking it easy and hoping that the thing will go away. He has an indomitable spirit, but he knows that he is going to die soon and he is accepting that." The Harrison statement used strong language to deny the Daily Mail's story: "We are disappointed and disgusted by the report," it said. "It was unsubstantiated, untrue and totally uncalled for, when in fact Mr. Harrison is active and feeling very well. It has caused untold distress amongst our family and friends. The original 'story' was conjured up by the National Enquirer, the Globe and the Daily Mail." Two weeks ago, Harrison told his fans he was feeling fine after undergoing radiotherapy at a Swiss cancer clinic. Swiss cancer specialist Franco Cavalli confirmed that he had recently treated Harrison. At the beginning of May, Harrison had surgery at the Mayo Clinic in the United States to remove a cancerous growth from one of his lungs. Harrison overcame throat cancer in 1998, which he blamed on smoking. He was given the all-clear after radiation therapy. Just over 18 months ago, Harrison survived a life-and-death struggle of a very different kind -- with a knife-wielding intruder who stabbed him in the chest. The former Beatle was almost killed in the attack at his home near London in late 1999. He was saved by his wife, Olivia, who hit the attacker on the head with a poker and table lamp. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jul 2001 14:23:32 -0400 From: Jerry Notaro Subject: Re: books - Confederacy of Dunces (NJC) SCJoniGuy@aol.com wrote: > <> > > I'll third that...we used to give copies away as gifts, and always got a positive response...you probably already know this but it's a fluke that the book even exists. NJC Bob, Of course there are lots of dangerous people out there who could harm any one of us. The families of presidents, of course, should be protected. But he is out of office now and there has never before been a benefit to have adult children continue to have Secret Service protection (which is outrageously expensive) after their parent has left office. I was referring to the special order Clinton signed specially for Chelsea before he left office to give her the protection AFTER he left office. Do you propose that all adult children of ex-president's have lifetime protection? Patti Davis? Ron Reagan, Jr.? Amy Carter? Tricia Nixon? Caroline Kennedy? It's a serious misappropriation NOT because they don't deserve protection but because it was never the law before and still isn't, but he got it through somehow on his own executive order. But nevermind, the Clinton's are somehow special and will always do and get away with whatever they please. I got used to that long ago and shouldn't have broken my vow never to discuss them again. NJC Dear Kakki, Boy, is my switchboard lighting up! Let me try to clarify my thoughts and my misreading of your post by pulling a few points from a reply I just sent to someone off list. First of all, I didn't read your phrase a "serious misappropriation of the public's money" as being about Bill Clinton's alleged actions to secure this protection for his daughter. Don't ask me why I missed the connection, but I did -- even though I am aware of the controversy and have heard it mentioned a few times in the media in general and endlessly on talk radio. I am truly sorry for missing that subtlety. I thought you were saying that protecion of Chelsea was "serious misappropriation of the public's money." Then you asked: << Do you propose that all adult children of ex-president's have lifetime protection? Patti Davis? Ron Reagan, Jr.? Amy Carter? Tricia Nixon? Caroline Kennedy? >> Yes, if they need it. My original point was that children of presidents -- even adult children -- deserve this kind of special consideration. I was actually surprised when I initially heard in the media that there was controversy over protection for Chelsea. Up until that point I had assumed that the secret service would have always been available for presidential kids, if requested. I would assume that any presidential offspring who asked for secret service protection -- with all the disruptions and intrusions that it would bring into their lives -- would probably only request it if needed. And when that person's father or parents are vehemently hated by so many people, whether they're Kennedys or Clintons or Nixons, well, there are even more reasons to offer them this perk. The way I look at it is, politicians choose to be thrust into the spotlight; the children of presidents do not have that choice. Ask Jenna and Barbara and Julie and Lucy Bird and Caroline and Amy and Ron, Jr. Their lives all became irretrievably altered by the American public and media, simply because their fathers became president. Remember when lots of people were outraged by how much money the government spent looking for JFK, Jr.'s plane? I couldn't share their anger because I think that, as public figures, the children of presidents are a unique breed who deserve a few concessions from the American public they have been thrust upon and -- too often -- devoured by.
